... that this was a book I was going to enjoy. But don’t let the opening line fool you ...

With the first line of the book reading … This morning I overheard my husband talking to his penis … I knew right away that this was a book I was going to enjoy. But don’t let the opening line fool you into thinking that this is solely a fluffy read. With real-life struggles and situations that would turn the most perfect lives upside down, there is much depth to this story.
Perfectionist Alex is an interior designer who has been married to Barry for many years. Childless by choice, they are the parents to an adorable labradoodle. But their lives get upended when Barry discovers that he is the father to a teenage girl, and grandfather to Ruthie. Although this is a lot for them to digest, it doesn’t take long for Ruthie to grab hold of their hearts. Now, they not only have the challenge of figuring out what to do with their new-found daughter and granddaughter, but the ex is trying to make her way into the equation.
What I love about Jackie Bouchard’s books is that she perfectly weaves amazing, relatable stories with adorable four-legged friends. There’s truth to the saying that ‘dog is man’s best friend.’ Having a dog play a good part of the book adds an element of warmth and love that just can’t be found else ware. A great book from beginning to end, this is a story you won’t want to miss.

A Doggone Great Book!

From the book’s hilarious opening line to its poignant, satisfying conclusion, House Trained is Women’s Fiction at its finest. Jackie Bouchard writes dog-centric stories with mature heroines, and Alex Halstad was a protagonist I could really relate to. Focused on her career as an interior designer and feeling content and secure in her decade-plus marriage to Barry and their decision to have a dog (adorable labradoodle Marie) instead of a child, Alex’s life is on a nice, even keel until the day an unexpected blast from her husband’s past arrives.
Suddenly, Alex finds herself playing the dual roles of step-mother and, even more horrifying for a woman who’s not a big fan of kids, step-grandmother to teenager Wren and her baby daughter. To say that this is a huge adjustment for Alex is an understatement! The inclusion of these girls in her life affects everything from her job to her marriage to her relationships with her sister and mother. I have to give kudos to the author for doing such a deft job in bringing such a wide range of characters of varying ages, genders, and species to life in this book. They were all unique and memorable in their own ways. I especially loved Wren who was so much more than your typical rebellious teen. (Her creative way of not-cursing in front of little Ruthie cracked me up every time!)
I’m putting House Trained at the very top of my favorites list for the year and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well-written story with lots of humor and heart.

I couldn't relate to the very selfish main character

Whiny main character. Got pretty tired of reading about how she wished she didn't lie to her husband and how she wished she didn't let people walk all over, but then she continues to lie to her husband and let people walk all over her! I couldn't relate to her at all. She just struck me as a very self-centered and retentive child, caring only about herself and her well-decorated and spotless home. She clearly has money problems, but makes excuses for continuing to buy expensive clothes, and having a maid, and getting her nails done. I started skimming the book at about the halfway point, hoping this woman would start to be a little less self-consumed, but it didn't happen. Gave up before I finished the book.
