About the Author
Kersti Niebruegge grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in journalism. She has worked for BBC Worldwide, "Conan," and "Late Night with Seth Meyers." THE ZONDERLING, a comedy about an old-fashioned residential hotel for women in New York City, is Kersti's second book. A Funny and Affectionate Send Up of the Big Apple

Niebruegge's first book was a funny and affectionate tale set in her home state of Wisconsin, and its good humor and sharp-eyed observations proved to be a winning combination. So too, here. The key is "funny" and "affectionate".
The Zonderling is a throwback to the kind of place you'd find in a madcap comedy from the 40's featuring a bunch of starlet wannabes on the hunt for a theater career and a man. But, this is a modern version, and a modern heroine, and, most importantly, a modern author. So what we get is a much more bracing and piercing view of the whole shebang.
It's very easy to say dismissive and disparaging things about New York City. It's a lot harder to have sarcastic fun while still getting across the excitement and vitality of that same City. It's harder still to tease and kid the City and the out-of-towners who visit it while maintaining the sunny and understated, but smart, good humor that has become Ms. Niebruegge's trademark.
Bottom line - I liked her Wisconsin, warts and all, and now I like her version of New York City - warts and all. This is a nice find.

THE ZONDERLING IS TOTALLY FUNNY!

THE ZONDERLING BY KERSTI NIEBRUEGGE: I found this book totally hilarious! The Zonderling(the residence) reminds me so much of the building my mom currently lives in. The Zonderling is like a little community in itself. NO MEN ALLOWED, unless they sign in, no air conditioning unless you open a window and catch a breeze and the women of the building are so different in their own ways . Then theirs our main character Heather who seems to be the only normal person there who walks into the Zonderling and falls in love with its outdated rules, outdated bathrooms (common bathroom) and the mix of bizarre tenants all under the strict rules of the "General" The book is short 152 pages but it is joyously packed with unusual characters and a good read.
