Christian, clean romance where tragedy meets faith

This story is a drama and romance with bible quotes, questions of faith, and a heartwarming story of love and redemption. I enjoyed the storyline of the hero who experiences a tragic accident that shakes him to the core as well as his faith.

I liked that the story offered an incident that might shake anyone's belief in life and good. Also, how the author allowed the storyline to unfold and didn't rush revealing the twist or the romance that has time to grow.

Then there are those kids. Caroline won my heart. From the moment Karlee describes her pupil, Caroline, I wanted a good outcome for her. The theme of family and friends being there for each other and never giving up in each is a strong and satisfying element to this story.

Family and friends refuse to give up on Eli, and his struggle feels real. It's a tough situation that absorbed me into the story. I wanted to see how it was play out, and overall it delivered.

I recognized some characters from the author's wonderful Wounded Souls series, which is not a Christian, clean romance series, but has strong storylines and characters. It was a nice addition.

For me, the Christian references were a bit much and took away from the story after a while, and there were a couple of coincidences that were a bit of a stretch.

This would be perfect for readers who want a faith-based, clean (no sex) romance with a test-of-faith and family values.

FULL OF INSPIRATION, LOVE AND DEVOTION....

After a long shift as a firefighter, Elijah Harris was on his way home, tired but on top of the world. He loved being able to help people. He had a great job, loving friends and family and the most important part of his life, he had his belief in God. All was well, until his faith was tested by witnessing a horrific accident. He couldn't save the man that was begging him to and he barely made it out himself. Why would God forsake him like this? How could he give everything to God and not be able to do what he was trained to do? So many questions without answers and they were not being answered. So instead of buckling down and praying, he ran.

Karlee was going to get married. She was going to have 2.5 children with her wonderful fiancée Timothy. Teaching children by day and planning her future by night. With God in her corner, nothing could go wrong. Until it did. Losing Timothy in that accident wasn't something she was prepared for. Her perfect world as she knew it, was over.

Until God stepped in with his plan and brought Elijah and Karlee together in a twist of fate or is it God's plan. Follow these two on their journey to finding themeselves, possibly each other and their restored faith. Only God can guide their faith.....

WOW, WOW, WOW...This book was amazing. My heart broke for both Karlee and Eli. Going through so many different emotions but oddly some similar ones after Timothy's death. Although the first part of the book focuses on Eli and his struggle with not only not being able to save Timothy, but also his faith. I loved that he tried to run and drink his beliefs away, but who can really run from God, he's everywhere and Eli soon finds out when he meets Karlee and Caroline. That little girl was such an instrumental part of their story (not saying, you have to read it to know who I'm talking about).
I think we have all questioned our faith once in our life and this book was a testament that if we follow the path that God puts forth without question, we will be rewarded. This book gave my faith a boost and I loved all the characters and I can't wait for Charlie's story. Have to read to know. The writing was awesome and the story flowed. You could feel Amanda Lansclos' amazing faith and love for God pour out of this story. I applaud her writing and faith in God. I hope everyone feels as lighthearted after reading this as I did. Enjoy!

Not for me

I did not like the writing style of this author, so the first couple captures were really rough. But then the second half of the book, actually got worse. I truly don't see any point to the chapters after Eli's car accident. The alcoholism is miraculously fixed, without God. They live together for a few weeks, even though they don't believe in it. And there are a multiple new characters introduced that add nothing. They are being called mom and dad...after a couple weeks... by teenagers when they aren't married, or living together or adopted. Then they still don't get married for 2 years at the epilogue.
The only redeeming value was the authors use a scripture, but even then it was just "found" by randomly thumbing through the bible.

A little of what I think about this book.

What an interesting and thought-provoking book this is. It gives an in depth and fascinating look at human nature; what we are and why we behave the way we do in the game of love. If you truly want an understanding of love, this is the book for you.

I would suggest this book to anyone who is looking for a new person to share their life with, or if you're trying to understand the person you are with now. Perhaps you are trying to better understand yourself and some of the feelings and emotions that we all have that change over time.

This book was written in total seriousness with a good sense of humor. You will find yourself smiling at some parts, being angry at other parts or feel almost like crying. I assure you it is because you will see yourself in at least one of the situations you will read. There will be denial and disagreement also, but if you have an open mind you will find an understanding that you never had before. Things will fall into place like pieces of a puzzle that never fit together or made any sense before. It will give you a very good idea of yourself and what you should be looking for in a partner. But most important is "You must be honest with yourself about your personality" for this to work for you. You might not agree with some of the truly amazing ideas this book will give you, (they might take some time to sink in and get used to). But I promise you that you will look at love with a different perspective after reading this book for the rest of your life.

After reading this book I immediately gave it to my son to read and have told several others they need to get this book! If you or anyone you know is having troubles in a relationship and that fits most of us, you need this book. Give yourself or someone you love, the gift of understanding.

The Mystique of Love Unveiled: How to Take Control of Your Life by L.K. Mickelson is a book for everyone seeking personal efficacy in the midst of love’s empowering and disruptive pervasiveness. It is a book about the paradox of love. The decisions we make to love someone involve complex emotional life experiences that Mickelson comprehends and appreciates—the breadth of feelings and the difficult experiences involved with falling in and out of love.

Many books oversimplify the subject of love, whereas The Mystique of Love takes a head-on approach to the risks involved with love as well as the enigmatic and sometimes abstruse qualities it possesses. Excitement, survival, sexuality, attachment, intellect, the practicality of love vs the emotional hurt that can accompany its fecund nature are areas that are all taken into account via classical references and anthropological and scientific data.

Take control of your love life

What is love? Tracing back as far as Adam and Eve, poets, philosophers, psychologists, and physiologists have puzzled over the many manifestations of love. But what do we really know about love? Children ask, “How will I know I am in love?” Parents typically issue a syrupy platitude. But the emotions that we categorize as evidence of love are actually quite the antithesis of the good feeling that love should imply. All too often we feel upset, threatened, or irrational and call that love.

Author, Larry Mickelson, argues that love “is directly proportional to the amount of pleasure being derived from the love object” and that conflating the emotions we have traditionally associated with love as the thing itself is a journey of self-defeat. Uncovering Love’s Hidden Truths: A Fresh Look at a Complex Topic is Mickleson’s attempt to clarify the concept of love and untangle it from the basket of emotional states that swirl around it and masquerade as love, when in fact emotional storms are the uncomfortable result of time-dependency, not love.

Mickelson breaks love into four types: sexual love, attachment love, intellectual love, and emotional love. He advises that the ideal rating (on a scale of 1 – 10) of each type of love in a relationship should equal 10,10,10, 5, with emotional love receiving the least emphasis. Given the willy-nilly characteristics of emotions, the lower ranking is important in creating a stable relationship with meaningful commitment.

Perhaps the most compelling idea in the book is that of time-dependency, which describes the progression of habits that we come to rely upon in our relationships. Not surprisingly, time-dependency is tied directly to emotional love and it is when time-dependency (or habits) are interrupted that our emotions flare up and cause us to think and behave irrationally.

These ideas and many more are methodically explained and underlined with a variety of poignant quotations from books, popular films, and philosophers. The book is well crafted and organized. The writing is engaging and written for a general audience. Some of the ideas presented will fly in the face of readers who think they understand love as the highest and most sacred emotion. Mikelson’s authority comes from years of observation and from his background in psychology and counseling. He includes no scientific evidence or research to support his ideas. But an open mind will nod in recognition at his logic. Being mindful of his advice may steer singles toward more enriching relationships than they’ve encountered in the past. Understanding the emotions we confuse with love will soften the misery of those who have recently, or are in the process of, ending a relationship.

Award-winning Canadian humorist and writer Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) was the author of more than 50 literary works, and between 1915 and 1925 was the most popular humorist in the English-speaking world. Leacock s fictional works include classics like Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich, and Literary Lapses. In addition to his humor writings, Leacock was an accomplished political theorist, publishing such works as Elements of Political Science and My Discovery of the West: A Discussion of East and West in Canada, for which he won the Governor General's Award for writing in 1937. Leacock s life continues to be commemorated through the awarding of the Leacock Medal for Humour and with an annual literary festival in his hometown of Orillia, Ontario.

He represents another Vonnegut Everyman caught amongst forces he neither understands nor can defend. Written in the aftermath of Watergate, Jailbird is, of course, an attempt to order those catastrophic events and to find some rationale or meaningful outcome, and, as is usually the case with Vonnegut's pyrotechnics, there is no easy answer, or perhaps there is no answer at all.

Starbuck (his name an Americanized version of his long, foreign birth name), in his profound ambiguity and ambivalence, may himself constitute an explanation for Watergate, a series of whose consequences have not, decades later, been fully assimilated or understood. The Nixon who passes across the panorama of Jailbird is no more or less ambiguous than Starbuck himself - a man without qualities whose overwhelming quality is one of imposition.

poignant portrait of fallen bureaucrat

Definitely the best of Vonnegut's novels that I've read, Jailbird is the story of Walter F. Starbuck, the smallest co-conspirator in the Watergate scandal. Having made his loyalties the best as he could, Walter finds himself in prison for withholding evidence against Nixon, even though he really had no true connection to him or respect from his fellow conspriators. After prison, Walter falls once again, committing a crime that mirrors his Watergate involvement in quite a few ways, and he goes to jail for the second time.
Vonnegut's ingenious humor is present always in the book, and his prose is bedazzlingly perfect for the subject. Even though the novel may seem sentimental at times, that seems to be Vonnegut's purpose: his character is a sentimental man and bureaucrat. Readers should note that Vonnegut also uses some symbolism to perfect effect, making the book subtler than most Vonnegut novels. All these elements are Vonnegut at his best; he recreates, hilariously and perfectly, the political world of modern times.
Throughout the story, Jailbird provides a pitiful hero, knocked down over and over again by his own fault in the bureaucratic world he has chosen for his home. It seems not so much the facelessness of the bureacratic system that destroys Walter(a theme visited over and over again in too many books, movies, etc.) as his own attempts to try and become part of that system and his emotional view of this world as a place where people are always considerate; his own desire to be a successful, protected, and respected man is the thing that makes him loyal and willing for all the wrong reasons and to the wrong people. In the end, Walter F. Starbuck is a victim of himself, a "jailbird."

a comic Kafka for the end of the century

I enjoyed the 3 Kurt Vonnegut works I've read so far. This one cruises and rollicks along as well as any. The jokes, the unbelievable coincidences, and the compassionate fury at man's inhumanity to man, both the premeditated kind and that resulting from sheer stupidity and carelessness. The nasty and the rich and powerful get even nastier and richer and more powerful, while the innocent go to jail, and the idealists go out of their minds. The twists and turns of the plot keep you turning the page. As the best fiction often does, this novel tells human and societal truths better than a factional account. The main character, Walter F. Starbuck, is sponsored by an eccentric millionaire who stuttered and was universally despised - his stammer started after witnessing a massacre of workers in front of his father's factory. Moral: the sensitive man cannot protest, only stutter, and is looked on as a fool by all; is that not the way of the world? Grown-up, Starbuck becomes a socialist and joins the communist party, like thousands of others during the Depression era: what could be more natural? A few years later, being a communist becomes a crime against humanity, and Starbuck is interviewed by the commission. Unable to take this persecution of good intentions and high ideals seriously, Starbuck flippantly announces that a famous patriot was also a communist in those days, as were so many others. This offhand remark sends the patriot to jail and ruins his life, a fact which haunts Starbuck till the end of the story.
The story is full of ironic symbolism and is almost a comic allegory in its treatment of contemporary American society. High humanistic ideals and compassion become a crime; those guilty of it are prosecuted with fury. Starbuck's foolishness causes a man's ruin, but rather than rail against society for this, Starbuck is racked with guilt, undiluted by his own imprisonment years later due to Watergate (tho Starbuck's role in it is never explained and Vonnegut has a ball playing with Starbuck's tenuous connection with Nixon: his entire employment in the administration is in a basement office that no-one visits and hardly anyone knows about; Starbuck's reports (on "youth", a subject Starbuck knows little about) are accepted but never commented on in any way.

Reading Jailbird is not a bad sentence

Vonnegut writes another book with a slightly offbeat structure to it. Yes, Jailbird is a book that jumps from the present to the past and then to the future without a definite pattern that reminded me of a slightly demented stream of consciousness. Even with these random jumps between events I still thoroughly enjoyed the book. In fact, the random jumps were part of the reason I enjoyed the novel so much because at the end of the story all of the stories finally came together.

Obviously I had a few other reasons that made me give this book a rating of four stars. One of the major themes I located in Jailbird caught my interest. This theme is that when people act for themselves, ignoring money and other influences, they will be happier with the way their lives turn out. This theme was illustrated in the protagonist Walter Starbuck, who is both controlled and independent in different parts of the story.

This book immediately caught my attention because of the style in which it's written. Even though the story is written in first person it contains a disconnected tone to the whole story. Whenever major events in Walter Starbuck's life are described the description doesn't portray them as being as important as they should be. It reminded me a great deal of Slaughter House Five's "so it goes" comment whenever someone would die.

This is an interesting book for a multitude of different reasons. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of Vonnegut's offbeat writing style. Even though this story is nothing like the books I normally read for enjoyment, it was definitely worth my time.

Alexa "Daffodil" Goldsmith is different from most people in Beverly Hills -- she admits she lives a lie. You got to love a character like that, especially one who is eleven years old, imaginative in labeling different types of lies by different colors, and standing up for her own personhood. That isn't easy, being the child of a Hollywood socialite and a struggling screenwriter, in a big expensive house with several servants.

I love the gritty portrayal of the reality TV world in which her mother becomes a large, and phony, part. She also tries to drag her husband and daughter into that world; after all, it brings in a ton of money. And money is what the family needs more of to save their lifestyle from going into the color red, as in bankruptcy.

I didn't find much right-out laughs, but a constant undercurrent of satire and observation that cuts to the core of trying to live the Hollywood life by adults, and an authentic life by a child. Daffodil wants to discover her true colors and live by them. That makes for a poignant journey for her, with so many opposites in her world of "reality." I discovered wisdom through her wit and energy. On one level this is a simple book, yet deceptive in its underlying message. As the observant child narrator, Daffodil is a modern Mark Twain.

I laughed out loud many times reading this book and I recommend it to everyone

Colorful Lies is deceptively simple, told from the point of view of Daffodil, an 11-year-old girl living in Beverly Hills, a member of a showbiz family on a downward spiral, whose grownups have sold themselves out to a reality show. Alexa "Daffodil" Goldsmith nails it on the first page: they are living a lie. Alexa, the narrator is wise beyond her years, and soon realizes, as her birthday approaches, that her entire life is based on a serIes of lies. In order to cope with them, while she tries to put the pieces of her broken home back together again, she categorizes those lies based on color, ergo the title "Colorful Lies". I laughed out loud many times reading this book and I recommend it to everyone. Five Stars.

Fun Aussie fiction page-turner.

This is such a sweet little book! From chapter three onwards it was absolutely gripping. I'd put it down and then find myself wondering what was going to happen next...and having to pick it up again. It's such a page turner I whipped through it in two-three days. Lots of relationship-focused angst and unexpected twists. It's a very fun, light read - perfect for holiday reading or a wee pick-me-up. If there's ever a sequel I'll be buying it and cancelling my plans for the next few days. Nice to read some good Aussie fiction!

It's the first fiction book I've finished in years - I couldn't wait to hear what happened in the end and couldn't put the book down. I laughed, felt happy and even a sense of justice. A Last Look at a Master's Inner Workings at Blandings Castle

This book will only appeal to those who are hard-core P.G. Wodehouse fans, especially those who love the books about the inhabitants of Blandings Castle and the Empress of Blandings. For these fans, Sunset at Blandings will be a delightful revelation and a final memorial to the great comic master. For everyone else, this book will be a non-starter.

P.G. Wodehouse died, unfortunately, while working on the manuscript for Sunset at Blandings (a title he would never have chosen himself, as the editor notes). The first draft of the manuscript was pretty far along with a story line written for the first sixteen chapters, along with many notes about how to revise those chapters and write the final six.

The noted Wodehouse expert, Richard Usborne, has done a fine job of reviewing the notes and taking his best guess as to how the book probably would have been competed, and arranged to transcribe the remaining hand-written notes which are reproduced here. From those notes, you get a sense of how the marvelously intricate and fast-moving plots were developed and how each page ended up with so many original turns of phrase that bring a smile to the reader's delighted face. It was well worth the trip to understand how much rewriting, condensing and polishing P.G. Wodehouse did. He always makes it seem so effortless. I found it reassuring as a writer to discover that he struggled with his craft much as most writers do.

To me, the book held two other delights that were unexpected. First, Mr. Usborne has considered all of the manuscripts about Blandings Castle and taken a crack at what the floor layout and surrounding grounds might have looked like. That's quite a challenge because P.G. Wodehouse didn't have an editor who cared about continuity to rein him in. The marvelously misshapen incongruities are brought together for a sense of what must usually have been the case in these novels. Second, Mr. Usborne used the railway schedules and descriptions of the surroundings to take a guess about where in Shropshire Blandings Castle was imagined to be. That discussion might seem senseless except when you read the notes about when the Library of Congress began its research to find out about the copy of the Gutenberg Bible that was deposited there in one of the early stories about the castle.

The story is one that holds much promise. Galahad Threepwood is again trying to help young lovers by foiling one of his sisters. He helps his niece, Victoria (Vicky) Underwood, to smuggle in her artist fiancé, Jeff Bennison, under the guise of being a well-known painter of pigs to make an oil of the Empress for the family portrait gallery. As usually, the poor fellow's fault is that he has no money. Naturally, Vicky is rolling in the stuff so the challenge is to get her stepmother out of the way. Vicky wants to elope but Jeff demurs because he wants Clarence to get his pig portrait first. That puts a strain on the old relationship. As another plot line, Sir James Piper, England's Chancellor of the Exchequer, is also drawn to Blandings where he will encounter another of Gally's sisters, Diana Phipps, with whom he is in love . . . but too shy to declare himself. Having a body guard doesn't make matters any easier. What ho! How will it turn out? No one knows for sure, and you guess is as good as Mr. Usborne's is.

The master at work--inside writing.

It was a bitter-sweet experience to read this book years ago, knowing it was P.G.'s last, and unfinished to boot. However, the editor (a Wodehouse biographer) included manuscripts and early drafts, showing marginal notes and erasures, Wodehouse's outline of his plot, and false starts of plot lines, and the editor's own analysis. A fascinating look into the process of writing.

Sunset at Blandings was Wodehouse's last and, sadly, unfinished book. What there is of the book is, as Wodehouse's writing invariably is, very funny. Accompanying the unfished novel are some wonderful extras including Wodehouse's plot outline, some of his other notes, the editor's analysis of the book, a short piece about the origins of Blandings Castle and another about the Empress of Blandings. If you're new to Wodehouse you should probably read something else of his first (Leave it to Psmith and Pigs Have Wings are both excellent for first-timers), but for those who like Wodehouse this offers an wonderful look at how he did his writing.

Easy to read, yet so inspiring!

This book was placed next in line for me to read, jumping ahead of the next two, primarily because I was eager to give it a read, but also because it's so THIN!

I must say, I cried, I laughed, but most of all I am inspired more than ever to evangelize and disciple people. It was a great read and I could NOT put it down. Read it straight through!
