I was expecting a funny story with lots of rock and roll debauchery

When I read the premise of this book (a has-been metal band moves into a 35-year woman's home to record their comeback album, causing chaos and disrupting her life and marriage in the process), I was expecting a funny story with lots of rock and roll debauchery. Well, there was definitely some heavy metal hi-jinks, but not the humor I anticipated. Instead, what I found in this book was a poignant look at the nature and complexity of relationships, including those we have with our spouse, family, co-workers, and most importantly with ourselves. Yes, there were some amusing situations in the book, but they were not played for cheap laughs. Instead, what really carried this book for me was the authenticity of the conversations and interactions, especially between the lead character, Brenda, and her husband Tim. Those personal exchanges really anchored a story that kept me interested in the characters and in exactly how they would get themselves out of the heavy metal mess they found themselves in!

Musical Fluff!!!

Who didn’t have a crush on a rock band in their teens? When I think of the bands that covered my walls back in the day (Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode), I remember all of the dreams and fantasies they were involved in. Back then, they were the demi-gods in my life; now, I’d probably ask if they can remember the lyrics to the obscure track on an early album (i.e. “Satellite” off DM A Broken Frame).
What I loved: The premise – how could you NOT have your favorite band take up residence in your home if you had a chance? The scene between Portia and Keith was absolutely hysterical – like most of the story when Hydra is in the house.
What I didn’t love: Of course, I couldn’t stand Portia. She’s the obvious character everyone loves to hate; but for a while I wasn’t too keen on Tim as well – even before everything happened. He seemed like a privileged mama’s boy but I’m glad he finally seems to come into his own over the course of the book and finally grew a pair.
What I learned: You never outgrow your musical crushes. You’re on my list Dave Gahan!!
Overall Grade: B+

The Little Extraordinary Things!

As a former musician, I was really looking forward to reading this book. I'm happy to say that the author didn't let me down!
What happens when a former 80s supergroup on the comeback trail ends up living in your house? One thing's for sure, it's not going to be dull.
Brenda, the main character is in desperate need of a little excitement in her life. Her marriage is stale and she's looking to rekindle that spark in other areas of life. That (and one fan letter later) is how Hydra (the 80s band) end up staying at her house and recording their comeback album nearby. It's a fun ride from there on in. There are lots of little surprises along the way and I found myself genuinely looking forward to continuing the story every time I sat down. The great thing about this book is how the little things in life are portrayed as the extraordinary - those precious moments spent with a loved one, walking the dog, and birdwatching (you'll be surprised at which character does this) - as opposed to the seemingly epic things, such as being in a rock band. And I speak from some personal experience. The author gets it, that's for sure.
Beside the Music was a hugely enjoyable read. Very worthy of your time and I'd recommend it to anyone who may be tempted.
