"Dementedly cheerful ... a rollicking catalogue of sex, violence, and acts of cartoonish cruelty, Barrow’s novel is a schoolboy’s happy nightmare writ large; readers may find it impossible to look away."—Publishers Weekly
"A masterpiece by a young genius, fated to die shortly after he had completed it."—A.N. Wilson, author of Victoria: A Life and Tolstoy: A Biography
"The primitive, understated style amid such horrors has a nice comic effect, and it might be argued that Barrow only exaggerates the usual catalog of man's inhumanity ... Barrow suggests a writer who might in time have joined the ranks of William Burroughs, William Kotzwinkle, or John Kennedy Toole."
— Kirkus Reviews
"The headlong energy and happy perversity of On the Run with Mary makes one admire much of what Barrow did, and wonder with sorrow at what he might have done."—Sam Lipsyte, author of The Ask and Home Land
"A unique masterpiece from a bizarre mind. To say it's Lewis Carroll meets Jean Genet . . . would be to belittle its farcically filthy originality."—Nicholas Haslam, author of Redeeming Features
Shining moments of tender beauty punctuate this story of a youth on the run after escaping from an elite English boarding school. At London's Euston Station, the narrator meets a talking dachshund named Mary and together they're off on escapades through posh Mayfair streets and jaunts in a Rolls-Royce. But the youth soon realizes that the seemingly sweet dog is a handful; an alcoholic, nymphomaniac, drug-addicted mess who can't stay out of pubs or off the dance floor. In a world of abusive headmasters and other predators, the sexually omnivorous youth discovers that true friends are never needed more than on the mean streets of 1960s London, as he tries to save his beloved Mary from herself. On the Run with Mary mirrors the horrors and the joys of the terrible twentieth century. Jonathan Barrow's original drawings accompany the text.
Jonathan Barrow was born in 1947, north of London. His promising career as a writer and artist was cut short when he was killed at age twenty-two in a car crash alongside his fiancée, two weeks before they were to be married. The manuscript was discovered in Barrow's office drawer the day after his death.

About the Author
Jonathan Barrow was born in 1947, an hour’s drive north of London in Sawbridgeworth, England, the youngest of five brothers. He attended Harrow, the boarding school whose alumni include Winston Churchill and Lord Byron, but never completed his secondary education. Barrow worked at the Dorchester and Claridge’s hotels in London before being hired as an advertising copywriter. He published short stories—keenly observed, outrageously inventive parodies of English snobbishness and eccentricities—in The London Magazine and exhibited his drawings at London’s Redfern Gallery, which has represented leading British artists like Henry Moore and David Hockney. His brother found the closely-typed, much scribbled-upon manuscript of On the Run with Mary in Barrow’s office drawer the day after the author's death in 1970, at age twenty-two. He died in a car crash alongside his fiancée, two weeks before they were to be married. This book, in which the narrator witnesses and uncannily prophesies what was planned as a wedding turn into a funeral, can be seen as both protracted suicide note and feverish love letter.

Bonkers, filthy, and very funny
By Eleanor
An incident recounted in the first pages of "On the Run with Mary" (published in Britain a few years ago as "The Queue“) gives some idea of what the reader can expect:
"The bursar raided his study and found three hundred pairs of soiled boys' underwear in a chest under his bed. And, hidden in a laundry bag, he found 12 lemonade bottles: each overflowing with boys' urine that was still warm. Next morning these bottles were put on display in the assembly hall as a warning to all other members of staff. Then, after the hymn, each boy filed past and those responsible had to claim their urine. I refused and was thrashed by Mr. Kille before the entire school."
Subsequently the narrator flees his school pursued by his murderous and perverted headmaster (epithets which could be applied to most of the book's characters), hooks up with a raddled dachshund called Mary, and embarks on a picaresque journey through London and beyond accompanied by copious amounts of vomit, urine, and excrement. "On the Run with Mary" is told in the present tense and episode follows episode with no let-up. At 120 pages it is quite long enough, but this is a very strange and funny read which is further enlivened by Barrow's illustrations.
"On the Run with Mary" was finished only a few days before the author's death in a car crash at the age of 22, and was finally published some forty years later. Andrew Barrow, who edited the manuscript (describing it as 'part Beatrix Potter, part Marquis de Sade'), has also written a memoir of his younger brother, "Animal Magic: A Brother's Story" which I would also recommend.

Unexpectedly Great Read
By jkprint
What a strange, engaging book. Once started, I could not stop. All sorts of vileness and violence keep the narrative humming along. Soon violence is normal, giant rats are no surprise, decapitation and dismemberment commonplace. You are in the thick of Barrow's surreal twentieth century world. It reminded me of reading the Marquis de Sade, a Sarah Kane unperformable play, or maybe some Tarantino movie I missed. Definitely worth reading.
