Setting a realistic bar of achievment to reach

I was honored when Kevin asked me to illustrate his book. His cheerful, positive and child-like enthusiastic manner motivated me out of a creative rut. As I put the pen to the paper his written words began to illustrate themselves. It developed into a super hero story that sets a realistic bar of achievment that kids of all ages can reach. Not all super heroes wear capes and have super powers. Most of them are boys and girls who wear normal clothes. They discover their mission by learning from life situations that reveal what they are really made of. Their self discovery leads them to use their gifts, talents and resources to make life better for everyone.

Who Knew Pancakes Could Save the World?

Full disclosure: Kevin and I are friends. When we talked about this book and I suggested different endings, Kevin's probing questions led me to understand that my adult writerly mind was filling in gaps that didn't need to be filled in. I was completely charmed by the story, and once I understood the audience Kevin was writing for, and the way they would fill in the gaps, I wished I had little ones to read this to.

I could pass

I'm glad this book was a gift & I didn't buy it... Honestly, I would be upset. It was just to short for a $10 kindle read.. I read lots of book & this one can be read in 20 minutes or less. It was just ok but not too helpful compared to other empowerment books. I read many good reviews but I'm not blown away by this book at all.

Some great moments but ultimately not worth it!

This wasn't even a book more like a brief outline to the page-turner Karen Civil should of released. There was some good moments but the book was literally 40 pages double spaced and not worth the price. I was very disappointed and TBH all the info gathered from the book was things she already mentions in interviews. Buy at your own risk!

Disappointed

I though Amazon sent me the wrong thing. The font is 18 pt, double spaced and is about 70 pgs. Around 15 of them are note pages. The "book" is littered with misspellings and grammatical errors. Instead of it being a book of tools, it is more about how she got started and then jumps all over the place. I love Karen, but I feel bamboozled, just because you can write out a story and publish it on your own doesn't mean you should. This seems like it was more of a checklist things for her to do and get money from rather than putting out a quality product. Disappointed.

Great book for a quick read

Great little book translated from... Icelandic? Norwegian? Danish? Whatever they speak in Iceland. The author, Bragi Ólafsson, I have since learned was the bassist for the Sugarcubes back in the day. I picked it up at random off the new-release shelf at the library, as is my wont, and tore through its brief 157 pages in a couple days. My random grabs often result in disappointment, but I have stumbled across some gems. A history of failures also has lowered my expectations, so the book doesn't need to be spectacular. This book greatly exceeded any expectations.

The Pets revolves around two fellows, Emil and Havard. Emil has just returned to Iceland from a trip to London when he spots trouble coming to his door in the form of an old acquaintance, Havard. Havard is that guy everyone knows who glides through life in a drunken haze, somehow managing to be just barely productive enough to support a lifestyle of drinking and causing trouble. He was great fun for us when we knew him in our early 20s, but he now represents a serious threat to our current status quo. If this was a Hollywood movie, I suspect Havard would be played by Owen Wilson.

When Emil sees Havard outside, he reacts as many of us would like to do; he hides. As if it was an ID'd call from a creditor. Undaunted by the lack of response, Havard crawls in the kitchen window and Emil commits to the dodge by hiding under his bed. During a tour of the house, Havard answers the phone and, pretending to be Emil, begins inviting Emil's friends over that night for a big party. One of the two major plots is Emil trying to figure out a way to both get rid of Havard and not reveal that he has been hiding under the bed. The second plot is the backstory of Emil and Havard's relationship revealed through flashbacks to London and the tragic hilarity that ensued there.

Ólafsson writes in clean, direct prose, giving vivid and detailed descriptions of what is happening in every scene. His style paints a realistic picture of the surreal action. I read an interview with Ólafsson and, having read the book first, I was surprised at how flippant he was. I think he is a person who takes writing far more seriously than he let on in that interview. When I read it, I didn't get the vibe that the author was at all flippant. The book is clearly the product of a talented, disciplined writer with an offbeat sense of humor. I am glad he made the transition from music to literature and I hope to see more of Bragi Ólafsson's work translated into English.

"Hilarious" is not a word that immediately comes to mind when thinking of Icelandic writing. Arnaldur Indridasson, the most famous contemporary writer in Iceland, pens mysteries which are among the darkest, gloomiest, and most haunting ever written, the pinnacle of Nordic noir. Life in Iceland can be tough. So when I stumbled across The Pets, I was amazed to see it described as "hilarious"--a book written by a young author who finds humor, even slapstick humor, in life in this cold, dark country. Nominated for the Icelandic Literature Prize in 1999, and first translated into English in 2008, The Pets maintains a bright and breezy style which belies the obvious care and attention to detail with which it is written. Olafsson accepts the weather as a given, eliminating it as a factor in creating mood and atmosphere. Nearly all the important scenes take place indoors, and though the writing possesses a humor which is dark by comparison to that of some other cultures, the novel achieves a kind of universality through the absurdities which dominate the action.

Main character Emil Halldorsson has been away in London, celebrating his million-kronur lottery win (about $8500) with a two-week vacation. Upon his return, he learns that someone wearing an anorak with hood has been looking for him, knocking on his door and then peering in the window. Gradually, the reader comes to know Emil, who is not sure if he loves Vigdis, his lover; Armann Valur, a chatty "prospective pensioner," who appears to be hopelessly in need of attention; and Greta, the pretty woman across the aisle on the plane, whom he hopes will visit him. The man in the anorak is Havard Knutsson, who has been away for several years and who has an agenda of his own. Havard has no idea of boundaries and no sense of responsibility. Gradually, the story emerges of Emil's disastrous relationship with Havard when they were "pet-sitting" in London, five years ago, and when Havard comes to Emil's house once again, this time forcing his way in, Emil hides under the bed, while Havard makes himself at home.

Filled with details which illustrate the dreary "ordinariness" of the characters' lives, the reader quickly realizes that Havard's life, in its totality, is far from ordinary. As he makes himself at home in Emil's house with Emil's friends, Emil finds himself trapped, fearing that revealing his presence may be more dangerous than staying hidden. Irony and absurdity work together, creating scenes which are intensely visual, and which would make great theatre. The dialogue is often hilarious as Havard becomes the "perfect host," using supplies Emil has purchased at the duty free shop. The alternation of music between Mahler's piano quartet and Elvis Presley's singing, the constantly ringing doorbell, the telephone ringing, and various cellphone ring tones suggests a broad panorama of visitors connecting with Havard at Emil's expense (literally). The chaos of reality becomes even more absurd as the party progresses without any limits being imposed.

The author's deliberately vague conclusion forces the reader to consider all possibilities, and Emil's continuing failure to confront this intruder suggests that Emil may deserve whatever happens. With the strange Havard acting as the complete opposite of Emil, the reader ultimately wonders who is the responsible person--if anyone--and whether the ghost of Emil, who may be knocking at the front door, may provide a clue. Wonderfully bizarre

This is a wonderfully bizarre story in which the main character makes a quick decision hoping to avoid an awkward momement only to become trapped in an even more awkward situation lasting for hours. It's a truly laugh-out-loud comedy, thoroughly enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this author's first book

I thoroughly enjoyed this author's first book, River Rising, a seat-of-your pants thriller that I couldn't put down. Herky Jerky is more in the style of Elmore Leonard in which this author displays a similar deft comic touch as the crazy capers of these oddball characters careen all over California. This is another thoroughly enjoyable read, which allows the author to flex his considerable talent into a different style from his previous thriller. I highly recommend this book as I think you will quickly be drawn in and pulled along this cleverly constructed plot laughing and chuckling the whole way.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Sometimes books in this genre have characters that are not believable no matter how much license can be given, and end up just being silly. Not so in Herky Jerky. The author made them just kooky enough to seem real and, thus, likable. The author has a deft writing style and an excellent ear for dialogue. The tone is dead on. And it was funny, too. All in all, a terrific read!!

Love these lawyers

Hot and sexy with laughs!!! I have read N.M.'s other books and love her humor and writing, but this book was my favorite of hers so far.

Adam and Lily have had a comical tug of war relationship since they were four-years-old. The important part is they never ever let go of the rope in that tug of war and stayed connected to each other as they grew up.
I loved how their thin line between love and hate dissolved in this book.

Favorite line: "Who knew you could get a camel toe in a dress?" bwahahahaha

Such a fun read!

I was lucky enough to read an ARC of this fun story. I had heard of her Lawyers in Love series and even had the first book in my kindle, but had not gotten around to reading them. So my first encounter with the crew was Legal Briefs and I loved them! I loved the chemistry between the two main characters. Lily is a fun, likeable female lead. She is witty and feminine and definitely someone I'd love to call a friend. And Adam.....oh Adam....he's hot and although he is an independent man, his family plays a huge role in his life which I found refreshing for a male lead. I also love the bit of background that we get on Adam's and Lily's turbulant relationship which got off to a rocky start at the tender age of four and got progressively more interesting as they got older. I also loved that this was a fun read, there are highs and lows but the book is entertaining and kept me intrigued. I didn't want to put it down. I will go back and read the rest of the series and hope there will be many more to come as I'd love to get to know everyone of the character's in N.M. Silber's wonderful series. Thank you for the chance to read this book.

The hotness of this book is worth the price of admission. Or, the price of the purchase. And your time. Definitely worth your time. In this Lawyers in Love series by N.M. Silber, Legal Briefs is the hottest one of the three that have been released so far. It's really borderline Nuclear on my Heat Ratings scale had Adam just slapped Lily's ass with a crop or flogger a few times. But these two enemies-cum-lovers are not kinksters but rather snarky sex fiends with a taste for the sexing of the other. And the bathtub scene? Yes, the bathtub scene. Call me when you get there. It's very enjoyable.

Great Designs, Really Well Done and Playful - Loved it! AAA+++

My daughter had me on a buying spree at B&N and since there was a great sale, I picked up a few books for her and my son. This was there, and although we both love our dog and really liked the book, we were overloaded at the time and had to keep this one on our plate for next time.
We really liked the dog designs and they were fun and playful, really well done!

I noticed it was a really well done book with quality pages and was very nice. Even though the pages were very good, I would still recommend using a safety sheet underneath, if you're going to be using markers. She uses mostly pencils and the sheets are excellent for that.

Some of the pictures, like the cover picture were very good. However, some looked very cartoon-like with large Powerpuff girl eyes and other strange features that make the adult coloring book feel more like a highlight's magazine.

Very nice coloring book

This is a perfect coloring book on several levels.1. If you are a dog lover or enthusiast.2. If you have artistic tendencies. 3. If you just like to color and make beautiful pictures. I could go on and on but I believe I made my point. This coloring book is well made with wonderful pictures and very nice paper. I would suggest if you decide to use markers, to put a protective sheet under your work in case it might bleed through. Colored pencils work really well with these pictures, too.

Perfectly Planned a perfect read

I loved this book. The characters were well developed and so much fun. We get to meet the family and share in celebrations. I loved the story and was glad to meet up with the characters from the other books. Another winner from this talented author.

A great feel good book to read when you wish to be entertained and happy for hours

Chloe is a planner. She needs to secure her future, but since the perfect guy has not shown up, she decided to do it on her own. Her parents had a bunch of kids who help when needed. So Chloe sets out to have kids, even if she can’t find Mr. Right.

Let me stop here. As a financial analyst I thought this the WORST retirement plan ever. But as a plot to a romance, I couldn’t stop reading. It was utterly delightful. Chloe is utterly delightful.

I wasn’t surprised in the least Rip Logan found her irresistible. I thought so as well. Rip is well named since he’s a ripped hunky policeman. And yes, I fell in love with him as well. Glad he didn’t have to arrest her… (but I will say no more.)

Not surprising, there are medical issues that attempt to thwart their HEA. (Linda O’Connor is a doctor in real life.) I won’t share the details, but I will say you will be very happy with ending.

The third book in the Perfectly Series is another fun romance to read! Chloe is a hoot - and loveable. Rip is sexy and suspicious, which makes for fast-paced hilarious story! It's a well-written must-read!!
