About the Author

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is an 1889 novel by American humorist and writer Mark Twain. The book was originally titled A Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Some early editions are titled A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur. In the book, a Yankee engineer from Connecticut is accidentally transported back in time to the court of King Arthur, where he fools the inhabitants of that time into thinking he is a magician—and soon uses his knowledge of modern technology to become a "magician" in earnest, stunning the English of the Early Middle Ages with such feats as demolitions, fireworks and the shoring up of a holy well. He attempts to modernize the past, but in the end he is unable to prevent the death of Arthur and an interdict against him by the Catholic Church of the time, which grows fearful of his power. Twain wrote the book as a burlesque of Romantic notions of chivalry after being inspired by a dream in which he was a knight himself, and severely inconvenienced by the weight and cumbersome nature of his armor.

Grade 5 Up-While Mark Twain is most often identified with his childhood home on the Mississippi, he wrote many of his enduring classics during the years he lived in Hartford, Connecticut. He had come a long way from Hannibal when he focused his irreverent humor on medieval tales, and wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The hit on the head that sent protagonist Hank Morgan back through 13 centuries did not affect his natural resourcefulness. Using his knowledge of an upcoming eclipse, Hank escapes a death sentence, and secures an important position at court. Gradually, he introduces 19th century technology so the clever Morgan soon has an easy life. That does not stop him from making disparaging, tongue-in-cheek remarks about the inequalities and imperfections of life in Camelot. Twain weaves many of the well-known Arthurian characters into his story, and he includes a pitched battle between Morgan's men and the nobility. Kenneth Jay's narration is a mix of good-natured bonhomie for Hank and more formal diction for the arcane Olde English speakers. Appropriate music is used throughout to indicate story breaks and add authenticity to scenes. This good quality recording is enhanced by useful liner notes and an attractive case. Younger listeners may need explanations of less familiar words, and some knowledge of the Knights of the Round Table will be helpful. Libraries completing an audiobook collection of Twain titles will enjoy this nice, but not necessary, abridgement.

Revolution by The Boss

You might wonder what prompted Mark Twain to sidle from "straight" fiction into the realm of outright fantasy. Twain transports a Connecticut shop foreman twelve centuries into the past [and 5 000 kilometres!] to Camelot and Arthur's court. Initially confused and dismayed, Hank Morgan's Yankee practicality is quickly aroused and he becomes a major figure among the panopolied knights. With the title of The Boss, his rank equals The King or The Pope with its uniqueness. His elevation doesn't distract him from a more profound impulse, however. Hank's Yankee roots and wide experience evoke an ambition - nothing less than revolution. He wants to sweep away the monarchy and aristocracy and establish an American-style republic in Arthurian Britain.
Mark Twain's scathing criticism of the sham of hereditary monarchy bolstered by an Established Church makes this among his choicest writings. He resents the condition of a Church which "turned a nation of men into a nation of worms." A fervent believer in individual freedom, Twain uses Hank to voice his disdain of Britain's royalty. It's no more than might be expected of a man who boasted of but one ancestor - who sat on the jury that executed Charles I. Hank knows revolutions never succeed when implemented from above. Revolution be achieved only when the individual's attitude changes from meek acceptance to
self assertion. Hank's method reaches people through clandestine schools and factories, publication of a newspaper and establishment of a telephone system. These new forms of manufacture and communication become the foundation by which Hank expects to abolish the ancient, mis-named, chivalric tradition. Does he change the course of history?
Twain relocates the roots of American democracy from the heart of the frontier yeoman farmer to the brain of the urban industrial worker. Here the man of wide, practical experience shows how to survive compared to those with a formal education. Hank has a simple ambition - establishment of a republic - but utilizes a broad spectrum of ideas to bring it about. He would gladly replace the Established Church of Rome with his own Presbyterian ideals, but is aware that it would be swapping one evil for another. "Each man should select his own religion, or make one" he contends. Yet, finally, it is this dread force that impairs his desire for change. The final sequence stands as a peer to the biblical Armageddon, Twain wallowing in a frightful bloodletting unseen in any of his other works.
Mark Twain contrasts the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution with the centuries of slavery, serfdom, and poverty that killed countless more people than that spasm of excising of aristocracy. What else spurred him to write of human rights with such passion? He had written of slavery before, but this book is especially wrathful in describing the "peculiar institution" eliminated in his homeland but a generation before. He forces the king to experience the slave's condition, a form of degradation he would have all aristocrats endure. Every feature of the human condition is examined in this timeless treasure. He challenges you to follow his gaze, considering whether today's societies, monarchical or not, will endure the scrutiny.

Works on every level

As with all of Mark Twain's work this book works on two very different levels. The first of course is a simple adventure story the second is a bitingly satiric work that unmasks many of the hypocracies of "conventional wisdom".

I have to believe that most of his readers of his time (and ours) did not understand his underlying messages regarding society and its institutions. For me, it was hard to miss the way he unmasked the church, the state and society as a whole. I had to laugh out loud at some of the ways he managed to expose the absurdities of government and religion.

This book is a quick read and is immensely satisfying if the reader takes the time to follow Twain's logic to its natural conclusions.

Killer classic...Serious Message with Big, Big Humor!

What a great novel! Twain is wonderfully funny, yet his scathing social commentary concerning his own times are as serious as a heart attack.

When a Connecticut Yankee gets sent back in time to King Arthur's Court, he decides his superior knowledge should be used to educate such an "ignorant race." Of course, we all know that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and if I didn't know better, I would say that the person who coined the phrase did so after finishing this novel. The story's main character, Hank Morgan, is a likeable, if not laughable character, yet as most of us already know: absolute power corrupts absolutely. Once technology gets on a roll, the beast of civilization takes off running and Morgan cannot pull in the reigns. Total disaster ensues (incase you had not already guessed).

This was a fun read and a look at a problem that is still very much alive today. Too much civilization can be like a disease, especially when those who are working to spread it find that they are doing it for reasons other than altruism.

Also, do you remember the scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when Indiana Jones whips out his gun to shoot the sword-wielding Sultan? That scene was surely lifted from this very book!

Trust me, this is a novel for thought, but one that will not bore you. Twain was a master and this is perhaps my favorite of his novels. Very highly recommended.

Fantastic Book

"The Final Shofar" is the best Biblical history of the world ever written. From Genesis to Revelation it gives you an exciting word picture of what El (Hebrew for God) is doing in history or His story. From beginning to end, El is all about family and a covenant relationship with His people. When man sinned in the Garden that treasured relationship was broken. Scripture details the lengths El went to restore that relationship. We also see all throughout Scripture how vehemently El hates idol worship or us giving our affection to any other god (el) but him.

El sees time as circular. Days, weeks, months and years all have a cycle. They involve the earth's cycle around the sun, the cycles of day and night and the seasons. Someday, very soon, the present cycle will have been completed and believers are going to live in the New Jerusalem with their Messiah for a thousand years. When the thousand years are finished and sin is totally removed from this planet, believers will make their homes in the renewed garden city (Renewed Jerusalem). As it was in the beginning, so shall it ever be, world without end.

In order to understand El's prophetic road map, we need to understand these cycles. Every seven years the Israelites were to let the land rest. Ever fiftieth year was a Jubilee year, in which the land not only rested, but any land sold to a fellow Israelite during the previous fifty years was to be returned to its original owner. Do you see the connection with Messiah's return?

All of El's set apart Feasts are based on the seasons and the foods harvested in those seasons. The Feasts are a blueprint of what El is doing in history. El has renewed His Covenant with man numerous times, beginning with Noah and the rainbow placed in sky, promising He would never flood the earth again. Every renewal of the Covenant involved the shedding of blood and pointed to the blood Messiah shed once for all of mankind's sin. So the New Testament isn't a New but rather a Renewed Covenant. I highly recommend this book.

The Final Shofar Todd D. Bennett

I’ve read a couple of Walk in the Light series and have really enjoyed them and have learned so much. The reason why I have given this series a 4 star is because Mr. Bennett subscribes to two very controversial subjects within Christianity and or the Hebrew Roots movement. 1st is that he believes in the gap theory which suggests that there was a gap between verses one and two of Genesis explaining among other things the age of the earth. 2nd Mr. Bennett believes in the serpent seed doctrine which puts forward the theory that Eve mated with the serpent in the garden which means that Cain came from the serpent seed. Again these are two very divisive beliefs for believers with good people on both sides of the camp. I am no theologian or Hebrew bible scholar just a blue –collar worker who loves YHWH and loves reading and studying His Word. For me the Word is clear that these two theories don’t line up with the plain teaching of scripture, but I may be incorrect. One other point which has added to my confusion is over the meaning of the word Nephilim which I have always been taught to mean the offspring of the Sons of Elohim and the daughters of man and not the Sons of Elohim themselves. Mr. Bennett does state on page 56 that there is confusion as to what the offspring were actually called but it’s confusing none the less when you have been used to understanding it a different way for some time. These points aside I have recommended this and the other entire Walk in the Light books to others for their information and understanding of YHWH’s Word.

Das Buch kann man x mal lesen und muss immer wieder lachen! Was mir besonders gut gefällt ist,dat Du nich nur die fremde Mentalität durch den Kakao ziehst,sondern auch Dich selbst!!! Das Buch ist eine einzige Lachparade! Einzigartig- mit typischen Ruhrpott Geschichten über die Grenzen des "Pott's" hinaus, hat es so noch nicht gegeben! Selbst-Parody und Komik vom Feinsten! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characters were interesting, and the plot kept me reading. While the story itself is not funny, there were plenty of moments of comic re!ief - especially centered around Clarence, the dog. As soon as I finished the book, I looked up the author to see if she had more Kindle ed. books. I'm looking forward to the release of the next book in the series.

Very disappointed.

I don't usually write reviews, but I am for this book because it was a waste of money and I don't want you to waste yours. Unless you know nothing about beauty and health, it doesn't tell you anything you don't already know. Either she isn't telling the truth or she just has amazing genes (she didn't even have menopausal symptoms). You can't maintain a decent weight and look like she does if you don't strictly watch your everything you eat and workout very hard or have exceptional genes. At least she admits to having some cosmetic procedures in small amounts but what about sharing EXACTLY what you do for exercise? I'm not sure why celebrities aren't willing to go into more details about what they do. At 47, in order to maintain a good weight, I work out five to six days a week for an hour or more doing weight training and cardio, counting calories and measuring everything I put into my mouth, not eating at restaurants, having desserts or processed foods, and I still couldn't be a fitness model. I don't know why they can't tell us that they work out 2 hours a day or do two workouts a day, etc.? I also think she was just trying to push her own skincare line too and some of the cosmetics she recommends aren't even available in the United States. I'll sum up the book for you from what I remember: exercise, eat healthy and wholesome foods (possibly think about becoming some type of vegetarian), but don't deprive yourself, drink lots of water, use hair extensions or Rogaine for thinning hair, don't tan, use self tanner and sunscreen.

Don't bother.

Save your money, ladies! I preordered this book with anticipation,which shortly became disappointment. Beautiful pictures of Christie throughout, and some good vegan recipes and some exercise tips. But the rest was all CHRISTIE. Stuff Christie uses, Christie's colors, Christie's fav clothes, and so forth and so on. There's few makeup and other general guidelines for people who aren't exactly like Christie...and frankly, who is?!

Warning -- there are rigged comments from "mystery people."
I read Ms. Brinkley's book, and thought it was pretty good. (Although not as good as I had hoped.) I wrote (what I considered) an exceedingly fair and perhaps overly generous review.
Now I am getting snark on my review from her "friends" or someone in her camp. (Publicist? Friends? Her?) As well as two identical comments (punctuation and everything) under two different male names. (One of which has since been deleted. I mean -- why would a guy be reading a book about women's health and beauty, anyway?)
Frankly, I expect more of Ms. Brinkley. She always seemed like a decent person.
Just warning you.

Horrible quality

Here I'm trying again with another elephant coloring book. This one is not for me (either) because:
1) The designs have too thick black lines.
2) Some areas are already shaded in black which doesn't give me the option to use another color.
3) The quality of the paper is horrible; really thin and you can see through! Just for this I should give it just 1-star but some designs are really pretty.

The good things about this book is that it comes with a lot of designs. I'm sending it back nonetheless.

The pictures are incredibly beautiful and full of detail

I simply adore elephants and after coming back from a trip to South Africa and finding this book as my first "grown-up" coloring book I was really excited. The pictures are incredibly beautiful and full of detail. A definite buy for anyone who loves these magnificent creatures as much as I do.

Neat images, but some are less conducive to coloring than others, and it is a bit repetitious at times. A few of the images are incongruously juvenile.
