This summer, my daughter and I were watching episodes of Northern Exposure on DVD, and one morning, we began to wonder what Cecily, Alaska, would be like ... if it was in South Texas, instead.And very shortly afterwards, we began to work up a sprawling cast of characters, and coming up with plots based on things that people have told us, or that we have read about in researching the histories of various small towns that were the settings for my books, or places that we have visited for book events. This is just the beginning for Luna City ... the first taste, and just a bare handful of the various interesting and/or eccentric residents.

A Perfect Summer Read

"Chronicles of Luna City" is a fun, relaxing read. It isn't so much a novel as a rambling series of connected stories about a small town in Texas, its history and inhabitants. Much of the book is told from the perspective of Rich Hall, a British celebrity chef who winds up in Luna City after a booze-fueled breakdown. (Shades of Gordon Ramsey?) This is a smart choice on the author's part. The "stranger in town" trope gives the author a chance to explain the town's customs and eccentricities and introduce the other major characters, a few at a time.

It's heartwarming to see the Gonzalez/Gonzales clan rally around the bereft Rich Hall, cleaning up the trailer he winds up living in; the local hippie nudist goat farmers who welcome him; and the goings-on in and around the cafe where he winds up being employed. The plot, such as it is, is mostly character-based and revolves around the events of Rich's first year in Luna City. You will find yourself pulled into the life of Luna City and wanting to go back for a repeat visit. Recommended.

Small town Americana, Tex-Mex style

Welcome to Luna City, a quirky little border town in Texas. This story is pure Americana, with amusing characters that you might find in any small town, but with Tex/Mex flavor. There are the families who have been in the area for generations, if not millennia, and an unusual collection of people who arrived in town by accident and were compelled to remain. Luna City is the story of their lives, with all the grandness and pettiness one might expect.

I found the first several chapters to be long on description, almost to the point of being tedious. After that, though, the pace picked up and the story built nicely to a cliffhanger ending. So, yes, I'm hooked in for the sequel, and I look forward to reading it!

A delightful book to be savored

This is, simply, a delightful glimpse into small town life, Texas style. You can't read this without smiling a lot and laughing aloud in a few places. Luna City Chronicles is relaxed, pleasant reading, something to be savored as we learn more about the town, its history, and the characters that make it special. By the end, you feel a part of Luna City. The book ends in a cliffhanger. Can't wait to find out what happens next to my new 'friends'.
Anyone who grew up in an old small New England town will recognize what makes Luna City familiar and enjoyable.

exciting fast-paced madcap thriller

Psychologist Kate Holley wonders if she is as big a Nutcase as some of her patients ever since her former husband Jay Rush the firefighter became her lover again in spite of her obsessive compulsive fear of his profession ever since her father was taken from her by the Fire Gods. While Jay is fighting a forest fire in Florida, her best friend and receptionist, Mona Epps is on sick leave so the High Anxiety shrink hires a temporary assistant Abigail Davis.

However, although Abigail is competent she changes her wardrobe and hairstyle to emulate Kate. When she begins to get involved in Kate's personal life, the psychologist knows in this case What Looks Like Crazy is crazy. Although she has other issues and is worried about Jay, Kate knows Abigail is at the top of the list as her temp is stalking every aspect of her life.

This is an exciting fast-paced madcap thriller that balances humor with the seriousness of a deranged stalker. The story line is fast-paced whenever the plot focuses on Abigail who clearly needs help. When the subplot involves other clients, neighbors or mom it is over the top with fun eccentricity. Readers will enjoy Kate's third case mostly because of Abigail, whose needs turn potentially dangerous.

definite page turner.

The best of the three books in the series. It keeps you turning the page until the end. Some funny moments but has a more serious tone to it. Kate Holly going from victim to taking control has you cheering. As the secondary characters band together and new interesting quirky characters are added. The stories and the plot well written and thought out. MS Hughes has a winner with this series.

Peppered with biting wit and southern charm, Charlotte Hughes returns with "High Anxiety" to transport her fans back into the laugh out loud and constantly crazy world of Dr. Kate Holly. Kate truly believes that her chaotic life might be actually calming down...or at least she seriously hopes so after she nurses her firefighting ex-husband back to health. When Mona, Kate's longtime best friend and secretary, finds herself suffering from a bad case of hives, Kate is forced to hire a temp--lest she be required to endure her mother's version of secretarial skills--and Kate's life quickly shifts from bad to worse.

Seriously, normal would be unexpected and boring for Hughes longtime fans. With trouble following Kate's every step and comedy around every corner, "High Anxiety" is a book to be shared between mothers and daughters, sisters and friends.

Ahern, the twentysomething daughter of Ireland's prime minister, has discovered a clever and original twist to the Moving On After Death concept made famous by novelists and screenwriters alike--Gerry has left Holly a series of letters designed to help her face the year ahead and carry on with her life. As the novel takes readers through the seasons (and through Gerry's monthly directives), we watch as Holly finds a new job, takes a holiday to Spain with her girlfriends, and sorts through her beloved husband's belongings. Accompanying Holly throughout the healing process is a cast of friends and family members who add as much to the novel's success as Holly's own tale of survival. In fact, it is these supporting character's mini-dramas that make PS, I Love You more than just another superficial tearjerker with the obligatory episode at a karaoke bar. Ahern shows real talent for capturing the essence of an interaction between friends and foes alike; even if Holly's circle of friends does resemble the gang from Bridget Jones a bit too neatly to ignore (her best friend is even called Sharon).

Ahern, the mediagenic 22-year-old daughter of Ireland's prime minister, debuts with a sweet, sentimental tale of a young widow's trials and triumphs in the year after her husband's death. Soul mates Holly and Gerry married in their early 20s; when Gerry dies of brain cancer at 30, Holly is utterly bereft. But Gerry has a final gift: a series of letters, which Holly is to open on the first of each month from March to New Year's, and which will guide her on her journey from grief. Gerry correctly predicts that Holly will not have gone through his belongings by June, found a new job by September or considered falling in love again by December, but with his posthumous epistolary encouragement she does all those things. She also enters a karaoke contest, takes a beach vacation and dances at a holiday ball she'd always attended with Gerry. The months pass as close friends help prop Holly up; around her, a marriage falls apart, a couple gets engaged and a friend announces her pregnancy. Within her tight-knit family, Holly's youngest brother makes a revealing film of her birthday party, her elder brothers change places in her allegiance and her parents take in one stray grown child after another for stays short and long. Ahern's speed (she wrote the book in three months) and her youth do show-the wisdom in evidence owes much to Nicholas Sparks and Sophie Kinsella-and her prose is pedestrian. She boasts a natural storytelling talent, however, resulting in a compelling tale sparked by an unusual premise.

Cecilia Ahern makes a splash with "PS, I Love You," a surprisingly charming debut about grief, love, family and struggling to move on with life. While Ahern needs to polish up her writing, she has plenty of raw talent, and a good grasp on her quirky characters.
Holly and Gerry were the perfect couple. Not sickening perfect, but perfect for one another. And so when Gerry dies of a brain tumor, Holly feels utterly lost and depressed, staying in her apartment and deteriorating. Finally she emerges from her cocoon, but still isn't ready to reembrace life. Despite the efforts of her family and friends, she can't move on.
Then she receives a package from beyond the grave: the List. Gerry wrote it before his death, leaving her instructions to do things like buy a bedside lamp, sing karaoke, and ends every note with "PS, I love you." Holly obeys the List -- sometimes happily, sometimes reluctantly -- and her new experiences help her to remember the past, while looking to the future.
"PS I Love You" is not your typical chick-lit. Sure, it has most of the usual trappings -- a young woman out in the world, the loud'n'lovable gay confidante, the outspoken best friend, the eccentric family complete with pink-haired baby sister. But there's no gooey love story with some new Hot Guy Du Jour, nor does it avoid the darker, more depressing experiences.
Ahern's writing is the sort that will be excellent when she gets a bit more writing experience. It's almost painfully awkward in places, the sort of thing that normally gets smoothed over by editors. But she has plenty of talent -- she makes the settings and characters come alive. And she knows how to mix grieving and humor, without making the humor less funny or the grief less heart-tugging.
Holly herself is a likable character, very true to life and sympathetic. Her family seems a little too bizarre at times, but weirdly enough, we all knows jerks, freaks and lovables like this. Worse, we're related to some of them. And Gerry himself, despite being dead, is one of the more intriguing personalities in the book even if he only appears in Holly's memory.
Ahern needs to work on her sometimes-awkward writing style, but her humorous, melancholy slice of chick-lit is a sweet read, especially for anyone who has had to say goodbye, and "PS I Love You."

Holly and Gerry were the perfect married couple from day one. Always happy, always smiling, and always there for one another. The kind of couple that others envy. But at the age of thirty, Gerry is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, and soon passes away. Holly is heartbroken. However, months after Gerry's death, Holly receives a package of letters that Gerry left for her before his death, letters instructing her to perform various different tasks that will keep his memory alive. Now, with the help of her closest girlfriends, and a family who drives her crazy, Holly is embarking on a new life that's even greater than the one she was forced to leave in the dust.

There are those books that leave you feeling sad upon completion, and those that leave you with a happy feeling. Cecelia Ahern's P.S. I LOVE YOU is a book that leaves you feeling a mix of both. Her characters are very in-depth, and dimensional, and show various sides of their personalities throughout the novel. This is a story that will make you laugh, and cry along with the characters, and hope for the best outcome possible for them. Like reading about your best friend, P.S. I LOVE YOU features sub-stories that will appeal to both sexes, both young and old. A first-rate first novel that will keep you guessing from first page to last. NOTE: Keep the tissues close by.

"PS, I Love You" is an entertaining and enjoyable read.
Holly, the thirty year old heroine, lives in Dublin and loves her life. Then fate delivers a brutal blow: her beloved husband dies and leaves her a very young widow.
The book recounts Holly's first year after her husband's death. His final gift to her is a series of notes to be opened at the beginning of each month. Each note contains one suggestion to help Holly move on with her life. And each note is signed "PS, I love you."
The book is quite moving as it depicts Holly's struggle to follow her husband's suggestions-give away his clothes, take a trip with her friends-and continue living. She realizes that her life had centered almost completely on her husband--not necessarily a good thing-and now, for the first time, she has to create a life for herself.
My only complaint with the book is that I found the writing amateurish at times. The plot, the characters and the ending were all satisfying and fully developed. However, I winced at some of the writing.
Still I would recommend this book to chick lit lovers everywhere.

A Ragman Christmas is short and sweet with a lot of content. It is a delightful Christmas story from the fifties. I remember the ragman driving through the small town I lived in "tooting" his horn to alert everyone he was on his way to pick up rags and metal items for resale. It gave everyone a chance to dispose of items and make a few cents. Most of the kids in the neighborhood feared him because parents would threaten to sell them to the ragman when they misbehaved.
The ragman in this story is rough but he has a gentle heart.

A wonderful trip down memory lane.

I grew up in Northeastern Pa, where this story is set. Ms. Hester's story captured much of what life was like growing up in a small town. An easy read, her story is sweet and lovely. Once I started to read it, I had to finish. When I did finish it I was disappointed, and wanted to spend more time with this fictional family at Christmas.

No matter how often we are told of our new life in Christ, there seems to be a part of us that continually doubts and questions it. No matter how many years are tacked onto our spiritual life, there seems to be something—or someone—that always wants our focus to be elsewhere.

In fact, every day we are met by a voice that leads us to become so caught up in only seeing our outer view of clay that we hardly take notice of the true treasure that is inside. And if we are completely honest, on the outside, all we tend to see are the cracks, scratches, and dents in our clay—marks made by our past choices. Every one of them provides reminders of our shortcomings. Yet with this perception, we tend to be frozen and fed the lie that all we are is clay or dirt. And this is exactly where the world and our enemy want us to be.

But this should not be so. What would life be like if we truly believed that we are More Than Clay?

This book does an excellent job explaining the origins and impact of shame- one of the go to weapons in Satan's arsenal. The author eloquently weaves the thread of The Gospel throughout this book, reminding us that Christ became the Shame Bearer so that we may be redeemed. Christ took on our shame. McKinney writes from a perspective of his own vulnerablity and his message is earnest and heartfelt. He brings to light how Satan works mainly in our yesterdays and our tomorrows, through shame and fear of the unknown. McKinney gives concrete examples which help us to identify arcane ways that shame creeps into our lives. He shares practical applications one can use to help form healthy habits for living in the present and living life unashamed. I think this book is an excellent self-help resource or for a recovery group. There are also in-depth questions after each chapter, which make it condusive for small group studies.

Think you don't struggle with shame? Think again.

I don’t really think of myself as someone who struggles with shame but the book opened my eyes to how wide the arms of shame spread. It helped me identify areas of my own life where Satan has used these lies to affect my relationship with Christ and with others. I highly recommend it. It’s great individually or also for small groups. My sons are currently going through it with their small group and I’m so glad.
