Wonderful!

This was a good story~the main character, though flawed, was good enough to root for. I thought the fictional inclusion of historical characters (Jesus, Peter, etc.) was done well, though I did wonder and Jesus' blue eyes. The villain was very villainous (believably so, without being very horrible); Malon's changing feelings towards him was some of the best parts of the book--other than the last two characters interacting in the last chapter. I felt as I could see and smell the town they lived in, though some words chosen didn't seem to fit the overall flavor of the story. Some violence (whipping, gruesome sword fights, flames). One misspelled word that made me smile in the midst of a tense scene--rouge instead of rogue. =P Two quotes: "Until then, he only needed to refrain from being killed."

"I thought he was dead, but I see him shining through your eyes." Best line I've read in a long time!

The rendering of a certain passage in Acts involving money was done well. The author has a love for the Lord and people that shows in this story. My favorite part? Besides the last couple of scenes, the family relationships. Kudos to the author for making an MC who, while in turmoil and frustration, maintains a respectful and loving attitude toward his family. He was able to be in dangerous situations, and have mental torments, without behaving abominably. And his character was consistent, even in change. Very satisfying!

a good ending to the series but I want more!

"The Master's Calling" by Amber Schamel is the third and final book in the (Days of Messiah series) and though it ended perfectly, it is still a bittersweet ending for this reader. I want to read more of Malon Ben-Tyrus and his family.

The Master's Calling" takes place after Jesus has been crucified and Malon feels betrayed by the disciples as well as Jesus, (how could he let Himself be killed if He was the Messiah). The disciples, and especially Peter are hiding because they are afraid and Malon is angry at them all.

Will Malon's ever feel He was right when he fell that he was called to followed the Master and was Jesus's death just a way to a greater glory for us all?

Everyone remembers Barabbas, the prisoner that was released on Passover, but no one knows his story. Amber Schamel has set out to give us a fictional account of of this man, letting us see what may have led to his imprisonment and what could have happened afterward.

I encourage you to read this series, you won't be disappointment!

Malcon's story is a story of betrayal and loss and joy! But this is more than just Malcon's story, it is also The Master's story of how he touched one family's life.

Thrilling Biblical Drama

This novel for youth takes place in Israel during the end of the Messiah’s life. The story is told through the eyes of Malon Ben-Tyrus, a young man who struggles with his resentment against the Romans and his desire to protect his family from the ruthless Barabbas. Although this is the third book in the Days of Messiah series, it can stand alone. The author brings the time period and Bible stories to life with historical details and the characters who people the drama. Suspense and excitement make this an enjoyable read, plus the insights gleaned through the characters’ experiences enrich the account. I recommend it for all ages. I received this free in exchange for an honest review.

Sign Please or Else

This is a very different book for me to read, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well written it was. I really became so involved in the story, I suddenly realized I had read the entire book within a few hours. You are in for a treat as you read this hysterical sometimes bizarre story of Nathan Hayes.

He has an incurable brain disease and doesn't really care about much anymore. It seems that is part of the illness and he just completely acts crazy. A normal person would care if they were going to die, but not out loveable friend Nathan. I liked this character so much. He is an older gentleman with spunk and stubbornness. A serial killer comes to his place to kill him. Nathan doesn't seem to mind at all. After all, the serial killer is just doing his job.

After he is dead he finds himself in this weird place where People are scurrying around with forms. Did the government take his body to a secret facility? When he adamantly refuses to sign his 21B form, chaos breaks out. No one has ever refused to sign the form. But good old Nathan is sticking to his guns. He will not sign no matter what they say. What is so important about this 21B form?

There is so much funny things happening in this book, I couldn't stop laughing. How many times will Nathan die before he signs? Or the bigger question is, WILL he sign? The bureaucrats will stop at nothing to get that silly form signed. But they haven't messed with Nathan before , so they are in for a journey. I will say that the story is quirky, funny and very creative. Well done Andrew Stanek. You have a new fan of your books.

Good book for unwinding after one of those bureaucratic encounters where you want to just grab every person at the DMV by the lapels and shake them until all their change falls out through their ears. This book is a caricature of small-town politics and small-town tyrants, and it'll be funny to anyone who has had to deal with a politician elected by 12 votes to 9.

HITCHHIKERS GUIDE TO BUREAUCRACY

For the many of us missing Douglas Adams and his twisted view of life and the universe, this is a lovely "echo" of his writing style.

Its not really much of a "story" but could have been a chapter from "The Hitchhikers Guide." If you enjoyed that book, this will be right up your alley. All of which may sound like I'm being flippant...certainly not...to be compared to Adams is a massive compliment. And if you have heavy disdain for bureaucracy, you'll love the satire here.

A comedy of errors

I enjoyed this book and I'm coming to enjoy Mary Rinehart's style of writing. It's a shame she's been sort of forgotten nowadays when she was a best selling author way back at the beginning of the 20th century.

The story is a comedy of errors among the privileged class. Society gal Kit McNair tries to do her friend Jim a favor by posing as his wife so his aunt (who holds the purse strings) won't know he's divorced. A small dinner party at Jim's house quickly falls apart when the servants run for the hills after the butler is initially diagnosed with smallpox and the entire house is quarantined. Things are made even more difficult when Jim's actual ex-wife invades the scene and is forced to be cooped up with the now helpless group. (The men don't even know how to shave themselves!)

As they attempt to survive the week, and each other, to see if anyone will come down with the disease, there's a minor mystery of some missing jewelry. But we're not here for that, we're in it for the romance. For Jim, who's still in love with his ex, is trying to woo her back, making it look like he's cheating on Kit when he's really not since they're not married. Meanwhile, Kit is developing a soft spot for Tom, one of the other guests, but he thinks she's married to Jim and Tom is livid at Jim's blatant infidelity.

Add to the melee demanding Aunt Selina, who doesn't like Kit but expects her to fight for her man (which really _isn't_ her man), a group with cabin fever determined to break OUT of the house, a swarm of reporters and cops determined to keep them IN the house, and the struggle to figure out how to make an omelette and you have a pretty funny book with loveable characters and a quick pace.

Delightful!

Very much in the style of Wodehouse. A delightful comedy about a bunch of silly rich people who get stuck quarantined in a house with no servants for a week. Complications include a jewel thief, a rich aunt, the main character pretending to be married to the nephew and a jealous ex-wife. A quick read and lots of fun.

A funny book about a great weed adventure.

When Woha, the street smart elf, got hold of Santa's fat sack; I didn’t know what was going to come next. Probably the InstaTHOTs. lol

This is a funny book, but about half way though I started getting the munchies. And you don’t have to be a hooligan, sinner, or a criminal to enjoy this book. Read the book and you just might get that reference. Loved it!

It's like Half Baked with Candy Cane power!

I laughed all the way until the happily ever after ending! This book gives a well needed twist on the holiday cheer that's always drizzled with pure humor and innocent joy. But then again, this is way cleaner than Bad Santa! I think this is a great gift for the college group set bored of the classic Christmas tale phenomenon and who are ready to enter the world of Xmas trash talk! Let's keep these types of book fresh for the holiday season!

Interesting Designs of indoor and outdoor household items – printed double-sided on perforated pages

I was a little surprised as from the name, I thought there would be some views of rooms within a house but it is really items found there plus some garden designs. The designs range from open and easy to color to more elaborate with some intricate details.

The book itself is really pretty, too. It has a dust jacket which can be colored, inside and out. The outside has a beautiful touch of gold foil. The designs include items such as: flowers, the front door light, cherry pie, flatware, beautiful glassware, frames, frames, candles, goldfish, outside window box of flowers, hummingbirds, and much more.

The designs are printed double-sided on a good heavyweight white paper. What is wonderful is that the pages are perforated for easy removal. There are eleven designs which appear to be spread across two pages and which will be divided if you remove the pages from the book. The good news is that, for the most part, they can easily stand-alone as single page designs.

I tested a variety of pens and what I discovered is: my markers either bleed through (alcohol-based) or leave a shadow on the backside of the page (water-based). None of my gel pens had any problems and I was able to color with ease with a variety of pencils on the surface of the page.

A Beautiful Coloring Book that Feels Like Home

I have a lot of coloring books, and while I love most of them, this one holds a really special place in my heart. It’s such a cute, whimsical book with home inspired illustrations that are heartwarming and relaxing to color. I have found myself spending plenty of hours coloring in this book already (many of them focused on one picture, honestly), and I love every illustration in here.

This book was also the book I used to test out my new Prismacolor colored pencils (I got the 150 count set), and I’ve been loving how well they lay down color and blend (as opposed to the Crayola colored pencils I was using before), so I’ve been having fun just playing around with a lot of different things in this book, and it’s been a blast so far.

Some of the pictures in this book are pretty intricate, but some of them are simply cute, ranging from flowerpots, to birds, to food. It’s all simply stunning, and the images are familiar and calming. I love how nice and sturdy the pages feel – the paper is thick, and I can see using gel pens or maybe even markers in here without much of a problem. The illustrations are printed on both sides of the paper, but since it’s pretty high quality, it shouldn’t be much of an issue. The pages in the book are also perforated, so that you can tear them out with ease and frame them if you want to. The book also lies nice and flat when pressed down, so you don’t have to worry about having a difficult time getting to those designs that are close to the spine of the book. And did I mention that you can color the cover? I love coloring books that have covers like this!

There are a lot of floral designs, as well as birds, in this book…so if you like to color birds and flowers, this is a great one to try out. This is probably one of my favorites (if not my absolute favorite) coloring books that I have gotten so far, and I know that I’m going to spend hours getting rid of stress and enjoying the different illustrations in here. There are other coloring books by the same illustrator that I look forward to checking out in the future as well, I loved this one so much!

Whether you’re new to coloring or you’ve been looking for some new coloring books to add to your collection, you really can’t go wrong with this one!

Years ago, as a child, I loved spending hours coloring in my coloring books with my friends. What a treat to revisit that happy time today, though not shoulder to shoulder with my friends .... laughing, exchanging ideas, sharing crayons .... the feeling is the same enhanced by this beautiful book which I just received! With all of the terrible events on the news lately, sorry to mention this but I have a point, it is so nice to step away from the TV, or take a break from working on Holiday tasks, and brew a nice cup of tea (or pour a glass of wine depending upon the time of day), music from my favorite artists in the background and let the cares and worries glide away while creating my little masterpieces in Steve Duffendack's book. After a short time enhanced by the wonderful designs in the book, my additions to the pages I have worked on take on a life of their own and while I will be the first to admit to having very few true artistic talents (LOL!!) to speak of, I love the time I have spent working .... or better yet playing with .... the designs. I love this book and can't wait to acquire more, after I've shared "Home Sweet Home" with my family and friends!!!!!

If G.K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy: The Romance of Faith is, as he called it, a "slovenly autobiography," then we need more slobs in the world. This quirky, slender book describes how Chesterton came to view orthodox Catholic Christianity as the way to satisfy his personal emotional needs, in a way that would also allow him to live happily in society. Chesterton argues that people in western society need a life of "practical romance, the combination of something that is strange with something that is secure. We need so to view the world as to combine an idea of wonder and an idea of welcome." Drawing on such figures as Fra Angelico, George Bernard Shaw, and St. Paul to make his points, Chesterton argues that submission to ecclesiastical authority is the way to achieve a good and balanced life. The whole book is written in a style that is as majestic and down-to-earth as C.S. Lewis at his best. The final chapter, called "Authority and the Adventurer," is especially persuasive. It's hard to imagine a reader who will not close the book believing, at least for the moment, that the Church will make you free. --Michael Joseph Gross

Entertaining, humorous, intelligent, and full of surprises

Portly, fun loving, witty G.K. Chesterton decided to write this book as a companion volume to his book HERETICS. Since HERETICS had criticised contemporary philosophies, ORTHODOXY was written to present an alternative viewpoint, and is therefore both affirmative in tone and autobiographical in many places. A sampling of his chapter titles gives some idea of Chesterton's sense of fun as well as his unusual approach to the matter of Christianity. Chapter one is "In Defense of Everything Else" (one pictures Chesterton with a whimsical, impish smile on his face as he wrote this). There are also chapters on "The Suicide of Thought", "The Ethics of Elfland" (a really superb chapter), "The Maniac", and "The Paradoxes of Christianity". In this easily readable book (only 160 pages in the small paperback edition), Chesterton shows that theological reflections and philosophical ruminations need be neither boring nor incomprehensible. This was jolly good fun to read, being both funny and intellectually stimulating. Highly recommended.

Love this book. Chesterton is sort of the Mark Twain of apologetics. Reading it I found that I was laughing one minute and seriously blown away the next. I am not a Christian, but this book gave me hope that maybe there is a place for a logic and faith based Christianity which is both orthodox and stronger than a fearful fundamentalism. I like the fact that Chesterton opposes his critics while for the most part honestly respecting them as intelligent people. It's the sign of a man secure in his ideas.
I would recommend this book to any other failed pagans out there. Would also be a good read for any agnostic interested in the role of imagination in simple, thoughtful living.

A brilliant defence of the Christian faith.

This book is Chesterton's defence of orthodox Christianity. It is partly autobiographical, in the sense that Chesterton describes various insights into the nature of reality, and various puzzles about reality, and then shows how (to his astonishment) the Christian faith accounts for the insights and answers the puzzles.
The following quote expresses this idea:
"This, therefore, is, in conclusion, my reason for accepting the religion and not merely the scattered and secular truths out of the religion. I do it because the thing has not merely told this truth or that truth, but has revealed itself as a truth-telling thing. All other philosophies say the things that plainly seem to be true; only this philosophy has again and again said the thing that does not seem to be true, but is true. Alone of all creeds it is convincing where it is not attractive; it turns out to be right, like my father in the garden."

About the Author
Mark Tidsworth serves the Church at the intersection of faith and culture. Starting Pinnacle Leadership Associates in 2008, Mark serves as its President, providing consulting, coaching, and training to clergy, church staff, congregations, and denominations. Mark is the author of two other books, Forty Days of Prayer, also published by Pinnacle Leadership Press and Disciple Development Coaching, co-authored with Pinnacle colleague Ircel Harrison and published by nurturingfaith. Mark is a frequent speaker, conference and retreat leader, as well as leadership coach and congregational consultant. Mark enjoys being married and raising their three children. Hiking, camping, and many outdoor sports are favorite activities Mark’s entire family enjoys. Columbia, South Carolina is the headquarters for Pinnacle and the community from which Mark works and plays.

I finally understand what a "Missional Church" is!

I finally understand how important it is to be a disciple at church, rather than just a member, and to be a missional church rather than an attraction church. The attraction church pretends that the post moderns are still looking for a church to belong to. WRONG! That is church-as-it-used-to-be. Instead, the church needs to find out where God is at work in the community and partner with that work: the missiional church. The book provides excellent examples of our attitudes and misperceptions in the church-as-it-used-to-be. And then it gives hints on how to become a missional church through a process of "Holy Experimenting". He also provides examples on how to develop disciples (as compared to members), using a "Rule of Life" and other discipleship development techniques. I got the least out of the last section of the book, on moving from a consumer culture to "Sacred Partnering", largely because I think our church is doing a pretty good job with it's fellowship efforts and reaching out to others with love. There is one graphic in the Missional Church section that is worth the price of the book. I'll leave it to you to find it.
