I picked this book up because I had a reading hangover, I needed something really different to shake me out of my slump. This book did it in spades. Jared Whaley was a country songwriter and singer that had a lot of irrepressible charm. On the downside he was also belligerent and obstinate. I don’t know anything about the country music business but everything related in the story sounded honest, realistic, and absolutely believable. This helped lend to the authenticity of that part of the story. Harvey Boyd’s character, the small town radio newsman, also carried the same credibility. As well as the ego of the high-powered lawyer, Marshall Laughlin, hired by Angel’s wealthy father to represent her in her defense for the murder of Jared Whaley.

Willard Blevins, a twelve-year-old with a new laptop, inexplicably starts channeling Jared’s spirit. Jared wants his story told from the very beginning, and he has chosen poor Willard to type out his story. Ty Hager, the author, often breaks the fourth wall in the story, which is told from different points of view in alternating chapters. I found it engaging and entertaining as we learn more about Jared’s life story. There are laugh-out-loud scenes as well as suspenseful, emotional, and heartbreaking scenes, with twists and turn of events that could not be foreseen. Diary of a Dead Guy has the whole gambit, adventure, sex, drugs, comedy, country music, and rock and roll, from Oklahoma, to Texas, to Tennessee and back again. It was a joyful ride most of the time that I couldn’t wait to get back to in the evening. I sure enjoyed it.

However there is one thing I have to mention. I found an inconsistency in Chapter 26 where Mack, Willard’s father, was silenced by a sharp look from Harvey. When on the page before Harvey had left the judge’s chamber to follow Angel after she ran from the room to the lady’s room. It was a minor inconsistency that didn’t really impact the story-line and since the rest of the editing was good I am not going to take away a star. This is a creative, unique, and entertaining tale that deserves five stars. I will happily read anything else written by Ty Hager.

FYI: Lots of swearing and F-bombs. There is also some sexual content that may not be suitable for some readers. FYI: **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy.** September 15, 2015

If you like to laugh, and if you have a warped sense of humor, then you will definitely enjoy reading this book. It is well-written, extremely creative and perfect for your warped sense of humor!

Las picardías del Güegüense es una versión narrativa de la más controversial obra de la literatura nicaragüense, como es la comedia bailete El Güegüense o la Danza del Macho Ratón, una obra que empezó a tener expresiones en la época colonial de Nicaragua, aproximadamente en el siglo XVII.
El Güegüense fue declarado Patrimonio Oral e Intangible de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en noviembre del 2005 y es considerada una obra excepcional como testimonio en la gestación de la tradición cultural mestiza en la época colonial española en Nicaragua.
En esta obra, que traslada la versión teatral a prosa, vemos al Güegüense en medio del pueblo, en sus fiestas tradicionales, pero guardando su calidad civilista, crítica y satírica, burlándose constantemente del Gobernador Tastuanes y su Alguacil Mayor, símbolos de la dominación española.
La obra original de El Güegüense o Macho Ratón, fue llevado a Estados Unidos por Carl Herman Berendt en el siglo XIX.
Carl Hermann Berendt era médico, lingüista y etnólogo y nació en 1817 en Danzig, Alemania. Después de graduarse recorrió Mesoamérica donde estudió lenguas nativas. De Nueva York visitó Nicaragua, donde vivió dos años en Masaya, entre 1871 y 1872. Aquí también realizó investigaciones antropológicas y etnológicas, prestó servicios como médico e hizo investigaciones lingüísticas.
En la ciudad de Masaya, Berendt obtuvo copia de unos manuscritos que había descubierto el filólogo nicaragüense Juan Eligio de la Rocha. Se trataba de una comedia-bailete de la Nicaragua colonial, con diálogos picarescos, musicalizada, y escrita en castellano antiguo, mezclado con náhuatl, que databa de mediados del siglo XVII.
Berendt llevó en 1872 los manuscritos a Filadelfia a su colega norteamericano Daniel Garrison Brinton, médico y lingüista como él, quien los tradujo y publicó por primera vez la obra en 1883 con el nombre de El Ballet del Güegüense o Macho Ratón.
En esta versión prosa, el escritor Eduardo Estrada hace una narración moderna de la obra dramática, que con el tiempo ha sufrido muchas modificaciones.

I enjoyed reading this picaresque narrative, Las Picardias del Gueguense. it made me laughed a lot, so much that my tammy hurt by the time I finished reading the story. I truly believe this book depicts the nicaraguan culture in way that it allows the reader to see how the nicaraguan people related to the Spanish in the colonial period.

One of the funniest books ever written

This book is hilarious -- I have loved it since I first read it in the 60s. This edition is typographically not very good -- crowded print and little white space, but better than nothing.

More Absurdity Than Comedy!

I love all the Robert Louis Stevenson books I've ever read, so was looking forward to this reprint. The description DID say it was a comedy, but it was extremely absurd, like watching a Keystone Cops movie. Also, I don't remember having to look up so many words in Treasure Island or Kidnapped, but I sure found myself looking up a lot of words in this book. Here's a few: Bodlieian research, tontine system, lucubrations, emolument, polyglot Testament, defalcation, fallacious Caledonian, water-butt, spirit-lamp, char-a-banc, rotatory argument, inchoate, quadragenarian torso, adminicles of misery, cicerone character, inappropriate exordium, vesta, key wards, catarrh, wherry, exiguous pipe, cornet-a-piston, pretermitted, rheum, got tick, and more! It did strike me as funny that Englishmen were speaking an English that I couldn't understand. But overall I was disappointed with how absurd and unentertaining this comedy was. I think it must have been written mostly by Stevenson's step-son Lloyd Osbourne, with Stevenson merely allowing his name to be used for promotional purposes. Mostly a very boring read.

THE GOSPEL is the heart and soul of the Christian faith. To most people the gospel is about salvation, transference from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. This author contends that it goes much deeper than that. The gospel has tremendous implications for how Christians should live. One of these is gratitude, and it is the secret to spiritual joy.

About the Author
Bill Farley was converted to Christ while doing graduate studies at Gonzaga University in 1971. He worked for 25 years in the business world before retiring from his business in 1999 to pursue full-time ministry. In 2002 he became the senior pastor of Grace Christian Fellowship in Spokane, Washington. He is the author of For His Glory, (Pinnacle, 1998) Outrageous Mercy (Baker Books, 2004, republished by (P&R 2009), Gospel Powered Parenting, P&R 2009), and Gospel Powered Humility (P&R Sept 2011), and Hidden in the Gospel (P&R Feb 2014). Bill and his wife, Judy, live in Spokane, Washington. They have five children and twenty grandchildren.

Lesson in Spiritual Joy - Scripture Packed! Short, Lovely Read.

William Farley has quickly become one of my favorite authors. To give you an idea, some of my other favorite Christian writers are Jerry Bridges, Stormie Omartian, Beth Moore, & Andrew Murray. I keep needed to be reminded the simple truth of this book. My life is an offering to glorify God. instead of focusing on my flesh desires, to keep bringing it back to "Thy will be done." Farley uses great illustrations that I've been able to incorporate into my life. Scripture is the core of his writing which is imperative to me. I kid you not, I didn't think I needed to read his book on humility (can anyone say blinded by pride?) but man, I got so much from it too.

He was adopted. At almost five, Paul Aubin couldn't believe what his "parents" were telling him; he was an adopted child they loved very much, though weren't related to in blood. Secret Sin Leaves Lasting Scars and Hurts

In the search for finding his biologic parents because of a familial medical condition, Paul finds something more. I enjoyed experiencing his excitement to finally meet his birth mom. But then we find out in disappointment that she continues to harbor old and deep hurts and bitterness. She drags with her the past guilt and shame which prevents her from engaging with interest into the success of her first born. An opposite experience occurs with his biologic father who he resembles in different ways. His father paid his penitence and achieved a hero's recognition. Plus he discovers the warmth of his paternal aunts and cousins he will come to know and their awareness of the situation early.
This book reveals the effects of "sin" in the lives of two young adults and that this effected the two very differently as the years past. We also learn that the secret past effects the unaware families of the two. One remains unaware. One chooses not to acknowledge their "brother." I feel sad for the unaware families. They would enjoy meeting and knowing Paul, their discovered brother, as I have.

Music, Laughter & Romance in Abundance

If you enjoy brooding musicians, snarky females and laugh out loud funny humor, this book is for you. The Duet is a light and fun romantic comedy with likeable characters and the right blend of drama, wit and sex appeal. This book gives "complicated" a whole new meaning as Jason and Brooklyn traverse the challenges of stardom and collaborative writing.

Jason keeps everyone at arms-length because his life is "complicated". But complicated looks good on this brooding musician even if he comes across a bit asinine at times. Beneath the calm, collected and somewhat arrogant surface, is a man with a heart of gold.

Brooklyn is living out her dreams with her side-kick sister in tow. The label's collaborative expectation does not seem to faze her, but the temperamental musician she's been paired with has her stomach in knots and her libido on overdrive.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and these characters. At times the humor felt forced and that moderately detracted from the flow, but the humor worked well to counteract the seriousness of Jason and his moodiness. RS Grey is quickly making a name for herself as a stand-out author of romantic comedies, a crusade she began with the release of Scoring Wilder in July of this year. While romantic comedies are not my preferred genre/sub-genre, this story was a fun read that brought a smile to my face during a particularly stressful period of time.

Fun Twist to the NA Genre!

The Duet was a fun and sexy read. It definitely had a different twist on the new adult genre that is well needed and perfectly executed.

“We were over from the start… You never said you’d give your heart…”

Successful pop singer Brooklyn Heart is at the top of her game in the music industry. She is suddenly blindsided when she learns that she is to perform at the Grammy’s in collaboration with soulful singer Jason Monroe. While Brooklyn is not too keen on sharing the stage, she is open to it. Jason is the exact opposite. He wants nothing to do with this pop princess, but he understands is what the label wants. During the writing process they come up with an unconventional way to find inspiration for words to their song. And this is just the beginning...

Jason is cold and uninviting towards Brooklyn. The harder she tries for them to get along, the more he pushes back. Brooklyn sees through this demeanor. Through his wall, she catches his stares and the smirks he sends her way. She knows there’s more to Jason then he is letting on. Eventually, Jason and Brooklyn fall into a snarky, sarcastic banter. It comes easy and natural to them. Until their hearts join in and things change. While Brooklyn is aware of her feelings, Jason does everything he can to ignore his.

I found The Duet to be such a different and refreshing read. I was captivated from the very first page until the very end. This story had everything including, romance, comedy, and even emotions that I did not expect. There were times where I giggled while reading, and other times, I was full on laughing out loud. The author truly has a knack for mixing comedy with a fun and sexy read. She is original in her delivery while maintaining a flawlessly written story full of wit and humor. I highly recommend The Duet to those looking for a new adult story that does not follow the same formula, it goes a step above.

IT'S STILL PUTTING A SMILE ON MY FACE EVERY TIME I THINK OF IT!

There is nothing quite like a book that makes you smile so many times your jaw literally starts hurting! I went into this story somewhat blindly, drawn to the ‘opposites attracting’ type of scenario, but I never expected to become so easily captivated by the characters, or that the mere thought of them even a week after finishing this book would still be putting a smile on my face. An upbeat, utterly delightful read, the perfect balance of light-hearted comedy and sizzling romance, I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious escape from the mundanity of everyday life.

The more time they spend in each other’s company, the more their opinion of one another changes, their mutual attraction only adding spice to the mix. But while their hearts might be aching for more, sex with no strings attached could be all their bodies are willing to offer to one another, especially when old skeletons come out to stir the pot and manage to rattle an already shaky relationship.

A truly heart-warming and satisfying read, even though I did not connect with some of the comedy at times and would have loved an even deeper insight into the characters themselves, this is a book that I loved reading and this author’s engaging prose will definitely make me come back for more.

Disappointing

I wish I could say I loved this book! I'm a huge Shopaholic fan and this one was a disappointment. Go back and read the very first book in the series and you'll find developed characters, plots that make sense, and scenes that are funny without being off-puttingly zany. Sadly, for me this book had none of that. Ultimately I think the plot is to blame---it's a thin storyline that has been fleshed out with fairly ridiculous scenarios (Elinor Sherman gets drunk in Vegas! Minnie rides a sheep at a fair!). Some characters have been forgotten altogether (where is Becky's half-sister Jess in this search for their father?) and some characters I don't feel I know anymore (wait, Becky is depressed because she wants a baby? that came out of nowhere). I was also disappointed because what makes the first couple Shopaholic books so lovable is their sense of realism. As the series has continued, the adventures have gotten more madcap and unrealistic. What made us initially sympathize with Becky was the fact that we've all been there---broke, trying to make relationships work, etc. etc. Now she just seems spoiled, with seemingly endless amounts of money. I don't find her very appealing anymore, which sadly feels like losing an old friend. My advice: Stick with the first couple books in the series, and don't bother with the last couple that take place in America ('Shopaholic to the Stars' and 'Shopaholic to the Rescue'). They are definitely the weaker links.

This was really part 2 to Shopaholic to the Stars. Don't read it unless you recently read the last one. I've read all the books in the series but I'd read the last one when it first came out and I was lost for much of this one. I'd waited for this because the last one didn't really have an ending. At least this one did end this story. Not as fun as the others.

This book is a must read!

Can I just say: this book desperately needed to be written. Thank you so much Sarah! I will say that this book does discuss the very heavy topic of eating disorders. It is from the perspective of 16 year old Jared that is watching his sister attempt to conform to society and become a “Snow Princess”. It is definitely a book I would recommend to all of my readers, and I hope you all get a chance to read it. Talking about eating disorders and how to deal with them in a Godly manner is something that we don’t get to hear in this day and age, and I can’t express how happy I am that Sarah chose to tackle this topic.

Things I Loved:
As I mentioned (multiple times, lol) I love the theme of this book. It’s something that desperately needs to be discussed and addressed and Sarah made sure that it was. I really liked that this was written in the point of view of the brother. Usually I wouldn’t be able to relate much at all to a book written in the p.o.v. of a boy, but without the p.o.v. in this book, we wouldn’t be able to address the fact that it’s sometimes up to the boys and men around women to help them realize who they are in God. (Even if it’s a brother or father.)

Things I Don’t Love:
I’ll admit, I did have a harder time connecting to this book. Eating disorders aren’t something I’ve had happen to me, or anyone I know in my life, (thank God) so it wasn’t as easy for me to understand how the characters were feeling in this book.

Overall, I recommend this book to all of my readers and I implore you to share your thoughts about it here in the comments or on our Facebook.

Fantastic!

This was such a fantastic and impacting little read. Truly inspiring. I love the godly truths and encouragement Miss Holman weaves through each of her books, novels and short stories alike. Absolutely God-glorifying. Though only seven chapters, this tale had me tearing up at the end and really ministered to me. The message of loving others even when it's hard and it changing us really meant a lot to me.
Jared's love for his sister was special, and I really appreciated the ending - read for yourselves and find out why! :) Oh and the message on modesty too was also lovely! Such deep meanings in just a short tale.
Beautiful book and I'm so glad to have read it in one sitting!
