Hits the Mark!

First of all, please read Just Friends and Pure Fiction so you'll already know, and love, the characters who show up in this story! Otherwise, you won't know why Micah smiles at Rachel every morning the way he does and tells her, "it never gets old". and you need to know the background of Maddie's life and how hard Grant fought to pursue their courtship -- and you'll be broken hearted to see them in this state so few years into their marriage. So, far, this is my second favorite Jenn Faulk story, and I've also read Perfectly Pretend, Take Heart, Resolutions, and Home To You (my favorite!) But, this one assumes you know these folks, and just like the Christmas season is, this is a fast paced, hectic, fun, frustrating, struggle to keep the reason for the season at the forefront of your thoughts and activities, THRILLING roller coaster of a tale!! My favorite line is, "Happy birthday Jesus, look what we got our children -- a tiny minion of Satan!" This story is relationship RICH, and I love how Ms. Faulk writes the couple dialogue -- it's perfect! There are a lot of whispered bedtime conversations, so the kids don't wake up, and it's so true to life! She also, masterfully and without preaching, encourages you to cast your cares on Christ and leave in His hands the things you are not equipped to fix, trusting that His ways are perfect! Flawed folks, just like you and me, trying to serve the Lord to the best of their ability. Another reviewer mentions sexual innuendo, and it shows up, but it's between married couples and not at all explicit. It seemed a natural part of the story and honestly done, not overly sensual. Delightful story, full of heart. . .some ache and depair, but also joy and hopefulness!

IMO, not one of Jenn Faulk's best

I have read two other books by Jenn Faulk (Resolutions; Just Breathe) and loved them both. However, I struggled through this one.

First, I had a difficult time keeping the characters straight, especially in the beginning. The first couple of chapters quickly introduce every single character in the book (a lot to be hit with at once!) so I was constantly wondering, "Wait, who is this?" Perhaps, if before I read this story, I had read some of Jenn's other books that included these characters, I wouldn't have found this so confusing. Since I had not, I struggled with this almost all the way through the book.

Also, the author's writing style is very fluid, and I had a hard time getting into the prose and had to read many sentences several times. Even then, I often struggled to grasp what the author was trying to say. Jenn interwove a lot of the character's background info throughout the story. I don't mind a bit of light reminiscing, but after a while, I wanted to be IN the current story and move past all of the characters' background dramas.

One small, final grievance... Jenn's writing is squeaky clean, but this tale included a lot more sexual innuendo than in her other books I have read. Granted, they are all married or are about to be, but I could have done without some of that. Since I have enjoyed 2 out of 3 of Jenn's books that I've read, I'll give the author another try. I do hate that I found this one a flop.

What's a family holiday without DRAMA!!

Oh my goodness!! This story made me laugh, cry and examine myself!! Great Christmas story. Weddings are not the happy ending, but the beginning of a lifetime of hard work and love!!
My heart hurt for Maddie! I was trying not to want to strangle Grant!! Fortunately Jenn Faulk never lets me down. She wrapped up three great romances in a book that took about two hours to read!! She also added in some other family members just for good measure!!! Don't miss this one. I highly recommend that you read Just Friends and Pure Fiction first so you get the beginnings of Rachel and Micah's story and Maddie and Grant's stories. Gracie and Jacob find love in Anywhere. If Jenn Faulk wrote it then it's worth reading!!!!!!

When he finds out her secret, Lady Nola runs from him, too. Will the love they both feel be acknowledged by the other?

This is an interesting tale told by Ms. James. The information she gives about the medieval history kept this reader drawn in and the book not put down until it was finished.

Great holiday read

This short novella in the Love's Christmas Past series is packed full. The story of a maiden in medieval England taken advantage of by a roue' and determined not to bring shame on anyone else is a sweet and thoughtful adventure. Nola, daughter of Lord Langley is at a marriageable age, and the nearby newly inherited Sir Guy Beauwater could use a wife. But Nola's secret threatens everything--especially when they meet by chance and fall in love. Worse, Nola's cousin may ruin everything. A freak storm, tragedy, and misunderstanding add to mix in this sweet holiday read.

Unusual and entertaining

****This review does not contain plot details or spoilers**** (I hate when reviewers do that)

I discovered this author on social media and found him to be clever and entertaining so I figured I'd give one of his books a go. I was not disappointed. Much like his online persona his storytelling is unique and completely unpredictable. I read 'Two into One' in a single sitting and that's not something I usually do.

If you enjoy a more traditional romance, adventure/crime drama than this book might not float your boat, but if you like cool, creative, crazy mash of many genres than you'll probably get a kick out of it. Ferguson a smart writer and his classic deadpan delivery of the absurd has a very British feeling to it even though it's set in Canada. While reading it I couldn't help but imagine him writing it while sitting in some smoky English pub chuckling to himself with pen in one hand and a scotch in the other :)

So much informing book! This book is very clear, even fun and beautiful at times. It makes you think a lot about your own patterns of procrastination, about the fears you might have. I certainly don't know everything about procrastination, but I really think that this book addresses everything or almost everything that you need to know. This is a worth recommending book!

I procrastinate all the time, because I know I still have time to do an specific task I take my time and do not do it ahead of time. Sometimes I meet all my deadlines just on time but most of the time I lost on track.I know this book is perfect for me, this will help me understand what procrastination is all about and how it will affect me and my job. This is such a big help for me, tips are well written on how to overcome procrastination and be successful in life. Such a good read.

In Beyond Warrior's Bride: Finances, Carrie and Kathy offer great advice to ease this transition of spending money God's way, budgeting, and tithing. Money is a big part of our lives, and God knew it would be. That's why there are almost 400 verses dealing with wealth, money, and riches. God also reminds us in Deuteronomy 31:8 that He is our Provider. He will never leave you nor forsake you, no matter where He is calling you to walk. This is a book I thought I would be able to breeze through quickly and easily, but it hit home. I recommend reading this great addition to The Warrior's Bride.

About the Author
MIKE COLLINS is best known as the penciller on the Panini Doctor Who Magazine. He is the storyboard artist for Doctor Who, has illustrated two Doctor Who graphic novels, and has drawn for the US IDW Doctor Who series. Mike has been creating comics for over 25 years and has worked for Marvel, DC, 2000AD and a whole host of other publishers. He currently draws a series of noir crime fiction graphic novels -- Varg Veum -- in Norse and provides storyboards for TV and films, including Doctor Who, Warhammer 40K, Igam Ogam, Claude, Hana's Helpline and Horrid Henry. He lives in Cardiff, Wales and his studio is a short walk away from The Rift. He has a wife, three daughters, a neurotic cat and is an enthusiastic yet staggeringly inept dancer.

Fantastic Designs but printed double-sided and across two pages makes it less than friendly for the colorist

Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the TV series, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.

While the book has great designs, it also has a number of issues that make it difficult to work with. I dithered between a three star and four star rating but went with four because the designs are really extraordinarily good.

The designs are fantastic for coloring. They are well drawn with a nice level of detail where I want it and a lack of detail where I would prefer to add my own shading, etc. It feels a little weird to be coloring the faces of actual individuals (and those who have spent many an hour in my house albeit on my television screen.) Using the coloring tools that will work best with this book, I will have fun with it. Maybe do a little Andy Warhol riff with unusual colors on some of the characters.

Physically, the book is well made. The front and back covers flip out with a scene of London that can be colored. The designs are printed on both sides of the page. The pages are a good heavyweight and white; however, they are not perforated. The sewn rather than glued, so removing the pages from the book involves snipping several strings in a couple of places. Most of the designs span across two pages and merge into the binding. Though I will remove the pages from the book, it may be difficult to line up pages and that makes coloring in this book less fun. As there are so many of these designs that will be effected, I have detracted a star from an otherwise good book.

My particular book had two issues which may not be in others. On a number of pages, my double sided images did not line up. That happens sometimes. The other problem with my book was that there were four rippled pages. Amazon is replacing my book as it was obviously damaged in printing. I am not taking away points for this as mistakes can happen and it is being fixed for me.

All of my markers, both water and alcohol-based, leaked through the page. None of my gel pens bled through to the back of the page. My colored pencils all worked well on the surface of the paper. Given this, I would not recommend using markers in this book if you want to color each page as you will definitely ruin the design on the back of the page otherwise.

In summary, a coloring book filled with great designs but which has a number of physical issues. The book could have been improved in a number of ways, such as printing on one side only and if not, using a better grade of paper which allows markers to be used without seeping through to the backside. Perforated pages would have been nice. But the real improvement would have been to have less designs that span two pages. If you must do this, 1) make sure the images line up properly and 2) give us some room at the bound edge to be able to get our pencils and pens in to draw.

Like the drawings, just not the format

The drawings are nice, but I don't like the format. Some of the drawings take up two pages, but it seems like the focus of some of the pictures is cut in half by the center of the book. I'm not sure how I'm going to color some of these. I was hoping I'd be able to cut the pages out, and either color them flat, or scan then and print off copies onto printer paper so I could color some of the pictures more than once. (I was kind of wanting to put some of the colored pages in frames for my wall when I was finished)

The pictures are printed on both sides of the page, which also will probably keep me from using any markers on them for fear of the ink bleeding through and ruining the pictures on the next page. (the paper seems fairly thick, but some of my markers have gone thru thick paper)

I would have liked this better if the pictures were printed on only one side of the page, and that they hadn't put some of the drawings on two pages. It ruins the look of the artwork.

EDITED TO ADD PICTURES

If you look at Amazon's pictures of the artwork, one of them shows the scene of Sherlock and Mycroft playing Operation. Their example shows what looks like an entire page, and probably would have been fun to color if that's what it looked like in real life. I included a picture of what it actually looks like in the book, along with another picture of an example of Sherlock on the roof of St Bart's.

They put the center of the pictures into the middle of the pages. It totally ruins any enthusiasm that I would have had to color the pictures.

At least the pages with the Wall That Had It Coming wallpaper seem to be coloring friendly to me, because that's one of the things I really wanted to color.

Returning do to very poor layout! What were they thinking?

Pre-ordered this (before there were any reviews or screenshots) and am returning it immediately. Designs are printed right to the edges of the page, disappearing into the center binding which means you cannot complete any page. And since most scenes span dual pages, the best you can do with these is color most of the left side, leave an uncolor-able center stripe, and then do most of the right half of the scene. Binding is such that book will neither lay flat or can it be disassembled into 'full' pages without cutting away a section of printed illustration. Basically, therefore, unusable. Seems like a rookie layout mistake; why didn't the illustrator or publisher notice?

About the Author

Barbara Comyns (1909–1992) was born in Bidford-on-Avon, in the English county of Warwickshire, one of six children of an increasingly unsuccessful Birmingham brewer. Living on the run-down but romantic family estate and receiving her education from governesses, she began to write and illustrate stories at the age of ten. After her father’s death, she attended art school in London and married a painter, with whom she had two children she supported by trading antiques and classic cars, modeling, breeding poodles, and renovating apartments. A second marriage, to Richard Comyns Carr, who worked in the Foreign Office, took place during World War II. Comyns wrote her first book, Sisters by a River (1947), a series of sketches based on her childhood, while living in the country to escape the Blitz, which is also when she made an initial sketch for The Vet’s Daughter (available as an NYRB Classic). This, however, she put aside to complete Our Spoons Came from Woolworths (1950) and Who Was Changed and Who Was Dead (1954). The Vet’s Daughter was published in 1959. Among Comyns’s other books are the novels The Skin Chairs (1962) and The Juniper Tree (1985; forthcoming from NYRB Classics), and Out of the Red into the Blue (1960), a work of nonfiction about Spain, where she lived for eighteen years.

Emily Gould is the author of the essay collection And the Heart Says Whatever and the novel Friendship. She is the co-owner of Emily Books and lives in Brooklyn.

I'd been waiting sixteen years to read this book and finally it was given to me to read by a friend who found it throught the Amazon search service.
It's written in the first person and has the typical Comyns' style -- horrific surroundings, mental abuse, and poverty described with the voice of a child in a matter-of-fact way.
In this novel the life of the 1st person narrator is recounted mainly through young adulthood -- she goes through the pains of childbirth, neglect, affairs,etc. and at the end achieves happiness.
I enjoyed this book a great deal mainly for the voice and the style, and also I did believe the descriptions of the type of life the characters lead. I was disappointed, however, with the ending which seemed to be a forced happy ending -- it seemed out of character with the rest of the novel. Fortunately, the ending is only a few pages long.
This novel preceeded her more famous novel, The Vets Daughter, and although interesting and enjoyable, I think it is not as intriguing or internally consistent as The Vet's Daughter.
Of course, I recommend them both.

compelling!

Listed as a favorite book by two different friends in conversations a decade apart, "Spoons" became a must-read for me in the early eighties and has remained one of my favorite novels. I was charmed when the main character wanted to adopt a kitten because it was born on her wedding day, and I enjoyed her discovery of green paint under her fingernails as she knelt at the altar. These and many other images serve to illuminate her commitment to a romantic view of life even when she is faced with dire circumstances. Throughout her journey, as she endures horrid situations,she masterfully paints each scene with a wistful perspective and, somehow prevails. The happy ending serves as a testimony to optimism and perseverance.

Such A Great Book That I Bought More Of The Same Author

I bought this book on a whim because I was doing a search on poodles. The author owned poodles, so it showed up in the search. The story sounded good so I bought it. I loved the book so much that I have been searching out all of the other books by the same author. They are all very good and I love them all. Seeing the main character's poor life makes you feel much better about the situation that you are living it. Other people had it worse. The book is well written and kept me reading it. I read it within a day or two. I highly recommend it.

Whether it’s lunch at The Ivy, or a protest march downtown, Bella and her gang of beauties (Shelley, Greta, and Nicole) experience life, and analyze it, to the the fullest. I can’t get enough of Bella’s world.

This book is a rollicking good read. It is fun, frothy and I laughed out loud throughout the book. It is also a brave and sensitive book because it deals with issues that all women think about in their heads, but often don't say out loud. I think that it is a read that all women will identify with and all men could learn from.

A Great Book!

This book is a compendium of the nine joint statements published by the ecumenical dialogue team called Evangelicals and Catholics Together (ECT). It's an excellent single-volume testament, if you will, of the painstaking work by this group of serious theologians on areas of agreement, as well as on those issues that continue to divide Evangelical Christians and Catholics.

When this project started twenty years ago, who could of imagined the depth and breadth of these discussions, to say nothing of their longevity. In those days, it seemed that "ground zero" for ecumenical dialogue was between the mainline churches and Rome (or between Rome and the Orthodox churches). Well, those discussions have all but ground to a halt due to a seeming lack of interest on the part of the Protestants. That's because they have become transfixed with women's ordination, abortion, gay marriage, gay ordination, and an ever growing list of "social justice" issues, to include denunciations of "white male privilege," etc. As an indication of how the dialogue is going between the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation - once a promising endeavor - their combined website hasn't been updated in two years.

These ECT visionaries knew that there was far more in common with each other than that which divided them - despite the occasional hyperbolic screeds from both traditions to the contrary. They have harnessed their intellectual prowess to "bravely go where no man has gone before." I thoroughly recommend this book. It's easy to read, yet challenging no matter where you stand on the ecclesiastical spectrum.

May the work of ECT continue for another twenty years and beyond. Great work Timothy George and Thomas Guarino.

Expanding the Common Ground Without Compromising the Differences

Over twenty years ago, a group of Evangelicals and Catholics have come together to dialogue on the common matters of faith. Founded by Charles Colson and Richard John Neuhaus in 1994, the Evangelicals and Catholics Together (ECT) produced nine statements of faith. The key aim is to affirm that while they do have serious differences in belief, they too have lots of common ground. Together, they believe that:
They have more in common than differences
They desire a deepening understanding of each other
They want to demonstrate what it means to tolerate differences
They want to re-examine at why certain issues are so difficult to resolve
They want to champion religious freedom through mature dialogue
They can encourage deeper theological discussions so that both parties can learn from one another.
They can engage the culture, society, political, and social strata.
In this book, three themes form the basis of dialogue:
The content of the Christian faith
The place of Scripture and Tradition
Ecclesial Reform

Each of the nine statements of faith are accompanied by an essay written by a respected theologian. On "Unity," Timothy George, founding dean of Beeson Divinity School writes about the project as an initiative that represents a group of individuals rather than the institutions they represent. On "Justification," Thomas Oden compares and contrasts the two sides' interpretations of justification by faith alone. Rather than getting stuck on the nitty gritty of faith and works, the common motivation is to preach the gospel to all who have not heard about the grace of God. On "Scripture," Thomas Guarino, Professor of Systematic Theology at Seton Hall University, expand on the points of agreement with regard to how Scripture and Tradition inform each other. On "Saints," Robert Louis Wilken looks at the people of God, the communion of saints, and calls this a "treasured inheritance" of both Evangelicals and Catholics. On "Holiness," Cheryl Bridges Johns sees the common interests in God; in being the image of God; in discipleship; and a call to holy living. On "Pro-Life," RR Reno emphasizes the sanctity of life. On "Mary," Dale Coulter highlights some misconceptions while at the same time brings out the concerns of the Marian dogma. On "Freedom," George Weigel agrees that religious freedom is increasingly being threatened. On "Marriage," Timothy George and Thomas Guarino tackle the difficult issue of same-sex marriage and together agree on a common definition of what marriage is and what it is not.

Since the beginning of the ECT initiative, there has been lots of suspicion with regard to the potential of ecumenism. Suspicions range from theological compromise to the fear of one bloc dominating or controlling the other. There are valid reasons to protest against the ECT. Yet, there are also equally valid reasons to expand on the common grounds of understanding. If there are areas that can be agreed upon and cooperated with, why not? In general, there are two ways in which to adopt such theological discussions. The first is to major on the differences and minor on the similarities. This first way will keep both parties entrenched in their own views. This way, it is very hard to even begin a proper discussion. The second way is to major on the commonalities and be mindful of the differences. This is the way of the ECT.

I remember evangelical missionaries in poorer countries telling me about them being forced to work with Roman Catholics simply because the authorities of the land had lumped them together under the Christianity umbrella. Usually, the atheistic and secular governments do not understand the differences between the two anyway. Being forced to speak as one voice, they had to do whatever is necessary to survive together. Otherwise, everyone will be put to various forms of persecutions and difficulties. When the going gets rough, a united front is the way to go. Maybe, theologians and religious scholars who argue without compromise may have taken their freedom of expression and religious practice for granted. In the real world, sometimes we do not really have a choice whether to work together or not. Circumstances can make strange bedfellows. Maybe, the ECT is a precursor of the need to prepare for persecutions that are to come. When those times arrive, we have ready documents to immediately begin cooperation based on our common beliefs first. For the sake of the gospel.

Great Collection

This magnificent compilation has three Plato writings: "Apology," "Crito," and "Phaedo." Though apparently early works and not as complex or philosophically influential as later ones, they are immensely important in portraying Socrates' trial and death. They are our clearest picture of the historical Socrates and would be invaluable for this alone. Indeed, I have read hundreds - perhaps thousands - of books, and this is one of my ten or so favorites, mostly because of how moving the depiction of the great man's last days is. The story of Socrates' Apology and last moments is part of world literature's very fabric, an immortal part of Western cultural heritage. Anyone who wants to learn about Socrates should start here. However, the works have great value even aside from this; a few have indeed questioned their historical veracity. This does not affect their philosophical, literary, and political worth, which is of the highest, making the book doubly essential.

"Apology" is Plato's least philosophical and most unrepresentative work but arguably his most important and is among many readers' favorites, including mine. The book's title is misleading in that this is prose rather than dialogue; it purports to be Socrates' self-defense at his trial. It is historically priceless if so, as it gives his last public statements and some background about his life and the lead up to the trial. Even if not, it is of immense worth as a passionate, sound defense of individualism and free speech; its timeless evocation of these all-important concepts is forever associated with Socrates and the main reason he has been immortalized. The work also piercingly examines the often vast law/conscience gap and is thus an early higher law document. Finally, it is a sort of mini-dialogue in itself touching on and in several ways tying up classic Socrates/Plato themes like the nature of piety and goodness, responsibility toward the gods and the state, interpersonal relations, and life vs. death issues. It sums up Socrates and perhaps Plato better than any other work.

"Crito" is a possibly partly historical account of the title character visiting Socrates in jail to inform him that he is able to escape via bribe; Socrates famously says that he accepts his sentence and argues down contrary pleas. This gives incredible potential insight into Socrates, in many ways telling us more about his character and thought than a full biography ever could. Again, though, it transcends this philosophically and otherwise and is particularly relevant politically. It also examines the law/conscience gap and gives further background on Socrates but is notable above all as a very early example of the social contract theory of government. This is an astonishing example of how advanced Plato was, as the theory is generally considered to have been founded by Thomas Hobbes nearly a millennium later. Even more amazingly, it is put forth more clearly and persuasively here than perhaps anywhere else, making the dialogue essential for anyone interested in political theory.

"Phaedo" ostensibly details Socrates' last moments, including his last look at his wife and child, his last dialogue, his last words to friends, and his actual death. A large part of Socrates' image comes from this, and its potential historical value is inconceivable, though its historicity can easily be doubted since the work itself strongly suggests that Plato was not there. Even so, it is likely accurate in regard to the things that really matter and certainly a fine account of how it very well could have been. It is extremely moving; shot through with pathos, it is one of the most affecting things I have ever read. One can surely not read it without being overcome by emotion; I can hardly even think of it without misty eyes. Anyone who respects and admires this central Western civilization figure will be profoundly touched; his famous last words seem comic out of context but are very much otherwise here, telling us much about Socrates and moving us yet further. This would be one of the greatest works of all-time if it had no other aspect, but it is also a fine dialogue appropriately dealing mostly with death. Plato examines perennial questions like the soul's immortality and metempsychosis very thoroughly and thought-provokingly, and the conclusion - unsurprisingly, given the circumstances - has uncharacteristic certainty. It may not convince our cynical, empiricist, science-loving, twentieth century-surviving age, but the argument is certainly well-made and in many ways admirable. The dialogue touches on other important subjects also and is generally seen as the culmination of Plato's early, Socrates-centered thought.

It is important to realize that these four works were not originally published together, but the trial and death connection means they are often collected. There are many such editions, but this is among the least expensive and one of the most widely available, making it ideal for most. That said, some editions - e.g., Dover's Trial and Death of Socrates, which is even cheaper - also have "Euthyphro." The ever-important translation issue must also be kept in mind. It goes without saying that anyone who cares about intellectual issues, especially applied ones, must know Plato, as should anyone who wants to be even basically well-read. However, this is far easier said than done for most; he is so different from what now passes for literature, to say nothing of pop culture, that he is virtually inaccessible to general readers. Yet the importance of persevering cannot be overemphasized; the payoff is well worth the effort. As nearly always in such cases, reading him becomes far easier after the initial difficulty; no attentive reader will ever think Plato easy reading, but he is utterly absorbing once we get used to his style. He has a near-poetic beauty that all agree has never even been remotely approached in philosophy, and such mesmerizing prose is rare in any genre. His dialogues are an incredible form at once intellectually and aesthetically pleasing - an inspired combination that has perhaps never been bettered; many have appropriated it, but none have matched it. All this means that picking the right translation is probably more important with Plato than any other writer. For the average reader, the more recent, the better is generally true, though older translations like W. H. D. Rouse's and Benjamin Jowett's are still very accessible. The important thing is to read Plato in some form, and those who happen on a translation that does not work for them should keep trying until their mind opens in a truly new way - and once done, it will never close again.

All told, though this edition is not the best for all, anyone wanting an inexpensive Plato/Socrates primer could hardly do better.

This book is in the public domain, it's available for free on several websites. At the moment I write this Amazon does not offer this title for free in Europe.

The printed version has 153 pages, app. 53000 words. There is very good review of this book by Bill R. Moore on the Amazon site, so I will only add an example of the style of writing of Plato. The first 2 phrases of 'The Apology of Socrates' are:

I know not, O Athenians! how far you have been influenced by my accusers
for my part, in listening to them I almost forgot myself, so plausible
were their arguments however, so to speak, they have said nothing true.
But of the many falsehoods which they uttered I wondered at one of them
especially, that in which they said that you ought to be on your guard
lest you should be deceived by me, as being eloquent in speech.

An Ideal Husband is an Ideal Wilde
