Amish Love Of A Lifetime

I loved the story! Isaac and Rebecca were friends from age 5 years old. She never made fun of Isaac' s lisp like the other kids did. They were always together till Isaac' s family moved away. They stayed in touch by letters for awhile, then lost touch. They grew up & both got married. When Isaac' s wife died, he went back to look for Rebecca and when they got together again, they fell in love. Rebecca's husband had died, too , and both were alone. After awhile when they fell in love, Isaac proposed to Rebecca and she accepted. They got married, had children, and were happy till they died in their 70's.
This is another wonderful story about the Amish. I love these stories because they never have bad language or fights among the characters.. I learned a lot about the Amish and their faithfulness to God and to each other. They lived simple lives and never complained . They never desired all of the " stuff " we "Englishers " felt was necessary.Their happiness comes from loving God and family and obeying the laws of their communities.
I recommend this book to all ages.
I loved the 4 books. Sadie Palmer will be famous for her wonderful books about the Amish.
Watch for her upcoming books! You won't be disappointed.

Life of a Family

Such a wonderful story of a family from the time the parents first start school and become friends, until they die. Written almost like a diary of their lives, it takes you through the joys and disappointments of first the parents and then each child.

Very well written. Just a bit of warning....if you cry easily, keep some tissues handy as the parents get older in book one. I so thoroughly enjoyed this book set and totally recommend it for reading.

I have two copies of this series. I am so pleased with the flow of the stories. This young author shows potential as a story teller we can follow for many years. Her mastery of her craft shows through her character development at every development in the story line.

I look forward to reading many more books by Sadie Palmer!!!

Beginning in 1881 and continuing to 1906, Ambrose Bierce created a series of sardonic word definitions of his own. Many of these were collected and published as The Cynic's Word Book, which he later protested was "a name which the author had not the power to reject or happiness to approve." So in 1911, he pulled together a collection that was more to his own liking and called it The Devil's Dictionary. The entries are a tad uneven in quality, but most are amusing and some are great. Each reader will have his own favorites, some of mine are as follows : ACQUAINTANCE, n. A person whom we know well enough to borrow from, but not well enough to lend to. A degree of friendship called slight when its object is poor or obscure, and intimate when he is rich or famous. ALLIANCE, n. In international politics, the union of two thieves who have their hands so deeply inserted in each other's pockets that they cannot separately plunder a third. BIGOT, n. One who is obstinately and zealously attached to an opinion that you do not entertain. BORE, n. A person who talks when you wish him to listen. CONSULT, v.i. To seek another's disapproval of a course already decided on. CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision. DICTIONARY, n. A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work. DISCRIMINATE, v.i. To note the particulars in which one person or thing is, if possible, more objectionable than another. EDUCATION, n. I'd skip this and purchase the UNABRIDGED version. Some of the definitions left out in this version are among Bierce's best. Also, the complete work is not so long: no reason to abridge something that in full length is only 100 or so pages long.

A fun, dark, twisted breeze

First of all, what is this bull with Amazon forcing you to answer these ridiculous questions that may or may not even apply to any book? This bull needs to have a stake driven through it. Gross. Now to my actual review:
Stephen C. Bird is back with another leap into a linguistically twisted netherworld populated by an underworld of various sex-obsessed down-on-their-luck-like-they-ever-had-any basket cases, with a smattering of magickal beings and fantastick occurrences. At first this book seems like it might be a bit more grounded in reality than Bird's previous works, Hideous Exuberance and Castastrophically Consequential. A good deal of the "action" takes place in towns standing in for various upstate New York locales, some identifiable, some baffling: Miasma Falls, Douchebag (in the western Cats-Kills), Mucha Nieve; and there we often get some kind of anchoring to a bleak, gritty, wintry reality. Other scenes are in Puta Jork, Nueva Jork, i.e. NYC. There is some carry-over of the entities in his previous books: Earth is still the blue green planet, Germany is Doucheyland, the United States has morphed for whatever reason from Amurycka Profunda to Amourrica Profunda. But don't count on an excess of realism. Still strange things happen. Grisly miraculous revenge fantasies are enacted, and sometimes taken back. And once again this is more a pastiche than a novel. But there are plenty of laugh-out-loud bits in this new one, more than in the first two. The first chapter is a hilarious exploration of one character's idea of Fakebook etiquette. Someone has won the Hieronomus Boscar for Best Obscene Design. There's a TV spinoff called Benjy the Articulate Porn Star. It is easier in this one to acclimate to Bird's unique style than in the first two, and so it's kind of a breeze to get through, and actually qualifies as a Fun Read

I almost sh*t a rainbow laughing ;)

I've read Mr. Bird's other books, and to say I enjoyed this one is an understatement! Thoroughly entertained by his dark humor and wit, and the reality of this twisted world that he captures in the nonsensical yet utterly familiar stories he puts to print. The nicknames and purposeful misspellings had me laughing out loud. He really tears social media a new one here, and mocks the gay community as only an insider can. Loved this book and recommend it to anyone who can relate to the idiocy of life in this world.

I hated this book.

I hated this book. It would not let me outguess, our outsmart it's direction. Constantly. That is why I could not put it down. Rarely can I stand such complex writing unless, as here, is it entertaining. Often I had to remind myself this is satire, comedy. It is thrilling.

This Book Is Phenomenal!!!

Omg!!! What an amazingly fantastic book!! The wittiness never ends, Robin is my hero,dealing with his terror of an older brother Jason has toughened him up,but it has also reinforced his humanity,on numerous occasions throughout the book I felt myself mentally punch Jason in the throat,his brutality toward Robin is disgraceful and his blatant disregard for others feelings left me feeling nothing but contempt for him.Thankfully,nice surprises await the reader.What I loved about this story is,it's very real. The situations that Robin has to deal with are common in a big brother little brother dynamic,the bullying is thought of as harmless but it can cause lasting damage.While reading this story,I laughed, I cried and I even cringed a few times (usually when Jason was around). I am a self professed bibliophile so I know good literature when I read it and this book is phenomenal. I loved the era it took place in,I loved Robin's taste in music (the whole glam rock and punk thing was my scene) the references of the times they lived in ,even the television shows brought back fantastic memories (especially Fawlty Towers). All in all,I loved the feeling of nostalgia I was left with. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a fantastic story,no matter the genre you prefer,read this book and you will walk away with a smile on your face feeling thankful that you had the opportunity to live in this era,if for just a little while.

A heartfelt and stressful teen read, especially if you grew up in the 70s

Little Bastard was such a wonderful read. It’s very clean, very teenage, and a little nostalgic to anyone who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. Robin is 14, and has a much older brother, Jason. Robin wishes he was as tall, as strapping, as confident, and as free as his brother Jason, but instead as he’s the youngest his mum still babies him rather a lot.

This novel focuses on the dynamic between four characters, Jason, Robin, their mom Rose, and Jason’s girlfriend Cherry. Robin has a massive crush on Cherry, and at times his spying on their shenanigans had me reading through my fingers almost unable to witness what he was witnessing. Corbin manages to ratchet up the tension in these scenes to such a degree that I found it virtually unbearable and did put it down for a break because I couldn’t stand if Robin got caught spying through keyholes.

Jason is the worst kind of older brother, one we all can relate to. We’ve all had friends who had the cooler older brother, someone who was adult when we were still considered ‘children’, and on every level you can relate to Robin and his interactions with his family, but also you empathise with Robin every single time Jason picks on him. They have such distrust between them that Robin is always cautious about being within striking distance to Jason. But Jason is loveable, I liked him a lot. He’s a typical poser being the tough nut no one can crack.

Reading this novel is like revisiting your childhood, and even if you didn’t grow up in the 70’s every issue Robin goes through you can relate to now, today. But this was pre-internet, pre-cellphone, and pre-home-computer days. As such life was more insular, you had to make your own fun, your imagination was your worst enemy, and word of mouth was the way most of us got life advice. Thrown back into this era when you open this novel you’ll be reminded how absolutely everyone who was adult back then, smoked. Weekends were about cocktail parties at the office, long sideburns, beers and street parties. Three things were missing for me, 1) Prawn cocktail. 2) Bright orange and yucky brown decor and clothing, and 3) Avocado bathroom sets. Those three things are synonymous with the 70’s, and aren’t mentioned in this novel (and I can hear the crowds cheering a collective amen to that).

Overall I would classify this as a teenage drama, but any adult can relate to it (especially if you’re raising teens yourself). The author managed to make the reader feel 14 again, stressed and depressed, cornered between a rock and a hard place, with some major relationship obstacles and mistakes in his near future. Robin strikes out after Jason destroys the one thing Robin holds very dear to his heart. Jason has a motorbike, he has his own money, he has the hottest girlfriend in the universe, he can come and go as he pleases, he’s good looking and muscular, is a complete success with the ladies, and he can smoke and drink and talk to mom adult to adult, and then he takes the one and only thing precious to Robin. It’s a catalyst for Robin finally snapping, finally doing something so mega he will regret it for the rest of his life. Interspersed with this personal hell are iconic moments in the social history of the 70’s. Elvis Presley dies, Marc Bolan dies, the book starts with the legend of James Dean’s car (Little Bastard) and its curse, addressing the death of an iconic legend from the get go, and also points out how taste in music divided the young adults of the 70’s and 80’s. Music defined you, it was your identity, and if you listened to the wrong music it could make or break a relationship. At the same time the royal family have momentous occasions celebrated by the entire nation, and the patriotism rife in the era is showcased gloriously in these pages.

Overall I loved it, I couldn’t stop reading it once I started, and heartily recommend it with a full 5 stars.
A brilliant novel which puts a bygone era on a pedestal for the teens of today to envy, and for the forever ‘teens in your heads’ to reminisce to. It’s got no dramatics, nothing was over the top, it was completely authentic and believable. It’s like being a fly on a wall in someone else’s life while also being able to read their mind to know the misery they’re hiding. It was raw and unfiltered, exposing how hard begin a teenage boy is (and how confusing women are), and it was brilliant.

Engrossing and captivating read

Little Bastard by Simon Corbin is the story of a young teenage boy growing up in 1977. A difficult and confusing age for anyone, not a child yet not quite a full blown teenager let alone an adult yet. In Robin’s case things are made so much worse by a merciless bullying older brother and the fact that their father walked out on them years previously, leaving the two boys to be brought up by their chain-smoking mother. Although Robin is treated horrendously by the bullying brother, both psychologically and physically, in some ways he idolises him… or at least wants to be like him. Maybe not in everything but Jason is cool, he rides a motorbike, has a hot girlfriend (who Robin fixates and crushes on – more confusion in a confusing world for him). Yet he understands that the way he is treated by his older brother stretches the boundaries of normality, not least of which is the nickname the older sibling has for the younger, L.B. or Little Bastard.

The age Robin is at, that ‘in-between’ age is perfectly symbolised by his stash of girlie mags (stolen from his brother) hidden amongst his collection of board games. The development of all four main characters is handled deftly throughout the book. While the atmosphere of the age is perfectly conjured up by the author. His relationship with all three of the main people and influences in his life change and develop so that Robin… well, I don’t want to give anything away.

A thoroughly engrossing and captivating read.

Amazing satire if you like it dark!

Perhaps the best book I read this year and likely to remain one of my all-time favorite satires. Witty but not self-indulgent. Clearly a love it or hate it kind of book. Whether you find the subject matter infuriating or funny you won't be bored. The writing is very compelling. I read it straight through in one sitting and have been sharing with friends. If you like Huxley, Pynchon, Delillo, Wolfe, Vonnegut, etc. give it a try!

Wonderfully Weird

Really dry humor and a totally unexpected twist during the climax made this a memorable read. The author does a nice job making the father character both a victim and a villain, so the reader doesn't know whether to identify with him or despise him. I like books that stay with you and make you think after you read them, and this one qualifies.

I absolutely loved this book!
I admit, I've been big fan of appreciation, and gratitude for a while. I also practice finding the positive aspects of everything and everybody. This book gives you wonderful ideas on the simplest things in life that we most often take for granted. I was able to get out of the worst moods and forget about my troubles by contiously choosing to focus my attention of the things I can feel grateful for. And most often these are the simplest things.

I'd definitely recommend this books to people who struggle with mood swings, or have issues with depression, let it be short lived or chronic. However I feel that anybody and everybody could benefit from this book, by giving the ideas described an honest shot.

While this is a book about cultivating an 'attitude of gratitude,' this isn't a hallmark-y, sentimental book. I appreciated the theological thoughtfulness behind each of these meditations. Rita Chester has a gift for exploring the various circumstances of life and showcasing God's grace there. We have a lot to be thankful for, whatever our circumstances if only we had eyes to see. Rita Chester has eyes that see the gifts of God for us, and she helps us all to see and understand all that God has for us.

“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

Impressive book! The book was short, but to the point. I now have simple tools that I can use on a daily basis and I'm excited about gratitude, appreciation and kindness and about looking for some opportunities to exercise them throughout my day. I already feel more positive! It's really worth recommending book!

Like a lot of people, Ben Adams went to school, then college, and eventually grew up and got a responsible job, a house and a family.And then his mid-life crisis kicked in...Realising that life was in danger of becoming all too serious, Ben started writing. Not in the way that Forrest Gump started running, but at least he started.He wrote on steamed up mirrors in the bathroom to make his children smile. Eventually he graduated to making up stories to entertain his kids at bed-time.For some reason, his boys didn't seem interested in his tales of every-day life, relationships, family, trauma, farce and the occasional bit of debauchery. His sons told him they preferred JK someone or other.Following his short-lived career as a children's author, Ben now concentrates on writing stories for grown-ups. He writes for people who have lived, loved, worked, strived and suffered - people like him. People like you.Ben lives in southwest London with his two boys and his dog.

Witty and poignant - a great read!

This was fresh, poignant, and witty contemporary fiction with healthy doses of drama and romance.

Dave Fazackerley is in a bit of a rut, life-wise. His wife has left him for a librarian, his mother's died (although, about that: apparently she wasn't really his mother), his dad is not quite as worship-worthy as he always thought, and his band refuse to acknowledge that it is no longer the 80s(ish) and that ballads were never cool anyway. Dave decides it's high time he turned his life around, but soon discovers that he has a knack for self-sabotage. Which is great for us readers.

The story was serious yet light, the writing well-crafted yet fluid, the romance charming yet cynical. The novel packed in so much, but was wrapped in humour and was never overwhelming for the reader. I loved it.

Well worth a read

To my mind, the blurb doesn't quite do this book justice. In the usual British way, it is modest and unassuming. But don't let that fool you.

This is a touching story of disappointment and hope, told with dry, witty humour which is perfectly pitched, and somehow familiar in tone.

I found this to be an entertaining story, with characters who were well observed and described. Well worth a read.

Nostalgic musical read

I was sent a free copy of this book by the author for review purposes. Dave has just buried his mother when he receives a bombshell of a letter that she wrote before she died in which she tells him that she is not in fact his birth mother. She doesn’t go into detail and tells him that he must go to his father Terry for the full story. Times are hard enough for Dave as it is; his wife has left him and he wants her back and this is just one added problem. If Dave wants to find out the truth he must speak to his father and before long we are enmeshed in a read that is riddled with lies. Dave’s whole life has turned upside down and every time he thinks he knows exactly what happened, it seems he uncovers another lie.

This is a cracking little read that I thoroughly enjoyed. The author sent it to me after he noticed I had read and loved the latest Matt Dunn and I can see why he thought of me. It has the same “feel” as a Matt Dunn or a Nick Spalding. It is a very quirky, light read equally filled with pathos and humour. Music runs all the way through the book. Dave comes a very musical family and he himself is in a band and there is most definitely a soundtrack from the 1970s and the glam rock era right up to the present day. Most of all though, Dave is thoroughly entrenched in the 1980s and it was a real trip down memory lane when his band played all the songs that I grew up with. In fact, I fell in love a little with Dave when I discovered his favourite band was Squeeze – how could I not?

There were times though when Dave exasperated me. He has a tendency not to face his problems but push them to one side, do something else and only come back to them when he has run out of alternatives. In addition, his father is a real character. There were times when I really liked him but at others he just made my blood boil.

My only real niggle about the book may well be more down to my pedantic nature than anything else. This huge secret about Dave’s birth has been kept from him all his life and I kept waiting for him to ask how it had been covered up. What did his birth certificate say for instance?

To sum up, this is a really good story which keeps the surprises coming all the way through. Very enjoyable read.

About the Author
Zachary Anderegg joined the Marines after graduating high school and served from 1994–1998, achieving the rank of Sergeant E5. He has appeared with Riley and his wife, Michelle, on Inside Edition, The Today Show, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He resides in Renton, Washington.

Pete Nelson received his MFA from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop and is the author of the novel I Thought You Were Dead and numerous nonfiction titles, including Left for Dead. He resides in Westchester, New York.

What an amazing story

I've been following this story since Zak rescued Riley in 2010. The book is about that rescue, but it's more than that. Zak was physically and emotionally bullied through most of his childhood and into teenage years, and emotionally bullied by his parents, and Zak tells that story too.
You should read this book for many reasons. If you're an animal lover, it's a no-brainer. The lengths Zak went to get this dog out of the canyon are pretty amazing. Those of us who are animal lovers understand why he did it. We know every time we do something to save just one dog, there are millions we can't help and it just seems endless.
Read this book if you were a victim of bullying or know someone who is. Zak provides insight into the endless hell he endured, and he should be commended for telling such a personal story.
Read this book if you want to learn something about confronting what seems like an impossible situation and solving it.

Once I began reading I couldn't put it down. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Opening my eyes.

I'm a bit bias with this review because I worked with Zak when he and Michelle owned Dream Catcher Yachts. We all knew something was different about Zak. Not in a cruel way but just different. My boss and I had several conversations about Zak, and the way he was, but always concluded that he was just "different".
Right from the start of reading this book it became quite evident why Zak was "different". It doesn't surprise me that Zak Rescued Riley. I have to admit that a few times I had tears in my eyes. I came from a very compassionate and loving family. Quite different from Zaks. I was never bullied. I never bullied anyone. I was the one who stood by and watched the bullying and never did anything about it. To this day, 50 years later, I remember watching the bullying happen and just standing by. The guilt. I have gained a much better understanding of bullying and the affect this has on all whom are the recipents of this brutal tactic.
Thanks for sharing your story Zak and I will make sure my Grandaughters and all I can reach read this book. Very insightful.

I read this straight through

...stopping only to sleep and staying in my pjs until noon the next day to finish. This is an intense and complicated story. I was continually reminded of the Florida 12-year old who recently was bullied to death by her peers as the author struggled to understand and communicate his own experiences to the reader. He did so expertly and it is easy to picture him as the strong and brave and handsome Marine he became. I envy the special relationship he has with his wife and, of course, with the fulfillment of every dog lover's fantasies - sweet Riley. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. Already time for a sequel...I want to hear about The Ellen Show.
