Review
The cry of every parent and church leader in this generation is "How do I help create media-safe homes?" Right Click is a wonderful resource that gives practical answers to the most-often asked questions about how to handle social media. I loved the sections on setting limits and the importance of dealing with bullying and porn. This is my go-to book for parents. --Dr. Jim Burns, President, HomeWord, author of Confident Parenting

From the Back Cover
"My favorite thing about this book is that it doesn't take a doom-and-gloom approach to technology. It recognizes the bad parts AND the good parts, providing a road map for the future."  --Jon Acuff, New York Times Bestselling author of Do Over

Buy This Book
By Steven Johhson
If I could, I would buy this book for every parent in my church. I am so excited about this resource. It is honestly the most thoughtful, practical, and helpful books on digital media available. As I read the book, I wanted to process it with anyone near me. Luckily, the questions at the end of each chapter help the reader do just that. I would recommend reading this in a group and talking about it together. Buy it for yourself and 4 of your friends. It will shift the way you and your family approaches and uses digital media.

"Right Click" - a great parenting resource!
By Jamie
'We’re in this with you. Digital media isn’t our friend or our enemy. It’s just part of life now. Let’s chart a new path together!' (p15)

I am a youth pastor for twenty plus years. The world has drastically changed from the mid-nineties to now. We’ve gone from cassettes to cd’s to iPods to online streaming and probably other forms. The world is wonderfully different. There was a real reality check in the past ten years for me when I fell behind students with technology. I hear the same thing from parents. How do we keep up and engage?

"Right Click" gives the healthy perspective, 'It’s an invitation to step into the digital world of kids with greater understanding and create a plan that’s right for your family.' (p24) With this perspective first comes the truth that parents and families have the responsibility of setting a workable framework and covenant of technology for their family. Second, our authors give helpful discussion questions and information on screen time, age appropriateness, boundaries, and family gathering points.

I am also a parent of a 9-year old and 7-year old. Both have school issued laptops or tablets. They are a click, search, or post away from situations that we do not want for them. How do I monitor actions and build trust in them? What do I do when something happens? We are given practical tips, suggestions and information to navigate this web of the new world we are living.

There are many books out there to help parents, but "Right Click" is one of the best at being thoughtful and useful. They understand the reality of the world we are in. As I began quoting from the book that the digital world we are in is neither our friend nor our enemy, it’s simply our life now. Families, if they use tools like "Right Click," will do well living and growing together.

Realistic, practical guide. Highly recommended.
By Rachel B
I so appreciate a book on this topic that is not downright negative and judging about the digital age our kids grow up in. I’m tired of well-meaning people lamenting the good old days—they’re not coming back and besides, in many ways the new technologies have brought improvements I truly appreciate.
What’s also refreshing is that the advice doesn’t focus on rules, but on principles and conversations. I quote: “A host of resources […] tell parents what to do about the latest digital media fad, rather than how to think about digital media more comprehensively.”
As (grand)parents, youth leaders, teachers, etc. we are from a different generation. We know deep down that we approach media differently than teens, but we don’t always take the time to understand how differently. This book makes clear what social media mean to teens for instance, what their goals are and the incentives (‘perceived needs’) for using them.
The focus in Right Click is purely on strengthening the relationship with your kids, by continuous conversations about digital media. The authors give multiple examples of how technology can actually bring you closer together as a family, instead of making each family member an island unto him/herself.
The book offers suggestions for media covenants you can set up as a family, shows how you can mentor your kids in becoming responsible digital citizens, and much more. It’s practical, warm, and above all realistic.
I loved the quotes and stories from other parents, which communicated what was said early on in the book: this kind of parenting is new and we are making it up as we go along. So there’s bound to be fails and mistakes…and that’s okay. This book may help you prevent a few though. I definitely recommend it, also for parents of younger kids by the way, as it will help you shape your 'digital parenting' and get off to a good start.

You shall serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you. No one will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will fulfill the number of your days.

Behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to you, that you may heal him of his leprosy.”…Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

Jesus in His death and resurrection paid the ultimate price in redeeming us not only from sin but also from sickness and disease. The Bible says in Isaiah 5:5

By His Wounds We are Healed.

Healing did not end after Jesus resurrected and ascended to heaven. We find that the disciples also performed miracles of healing.

A WITTY AND WONDERFUL READ!
By R. Galik
There is only the slenderest threat of a story here, just enough to propel the action forward. The real reason to read this novel is its sparkling dialogue. (In fact, the book is probably 50 percent dialogue and 35 percent inner monologue) Throughout it, I was reminded of those great THIN MAN films of the 1930's and '40's, particularly as our struggling writer and his wise-cracking PI play off each other like modern-day versions of William Powell and Myrna Loy. A Cruella DeVille-ish girlfriend and Guys-And-Dolls inspired gangster add some color and a touch of menace, but really the story and the fun are due to our main characters. If there is a downside here, it's the title, which has little relevance, and worse, could throw off potential readers by suggesting a different genre altogether. That would be a shame, because Jo Andrew's dialogue sparkles too much to go to waste. Read it and enjoy!

Solid, Straightforward Bible Teaching
By Tim Challies
John MacArthur is a study in consistency. Through more than forty-five years of public ministry he has simply taught the Bible. And the more he simply teaches the Bible, the more his audience and his influence grow and expand. In those years he has taught (and written commentaries) on every book of the New Testament while publishing dozens of bestselling books. His most recent book, Parables, is vintage John MacArthur.

This new book shows how Jesus used parables to reveal the unfolding mystery of God’s kingdom. MacArthur does this by teaching through a series of Jesus’ most prominent and powerful parables (though, because he has already written an entire book on Jesus’ best-known parable, he passes over The Prodigal Son). In each case he describes the context in which Jesus delivered the parable, he explains what Jesus meant to accomplish, and he shows what it teaches about God and his kingdom. It is just what MacArthur does—sound, helpful, quality Bible teaching.

But before he does any of this, he invests some up-front effort in helping the reader understand the very literary form of the parable. What is a parable? We probably know one when we see one, especially in the gospels. But how many can define it?

The most distinct marker of a parable is that it uses illustration and comparison to teach a spiritual lesson. MacArthur says, “A parable is an ingeniously simple word picture illuminating a profound spiritual lesson.” A parable always makes a comparison between something commonplace and some truth in the spritual realm. Jesus did not invent the form, though certainly he mastered it like no one else before or since.

MacArthur goes on to address two important and controversial questions: Why did Jesus teach in parables, and how can we interpet his parables rightly? After looking at some examples of sloppy thinking when it comes to parables, MacArthur shows that “Jesus’ parables had a clear twofold purpose: They hid the truth from self-righteous or self-satisfied people who fancied themselves too sophisticated to learn from Jesus, while the same parables revealed truth to eager souls with childlike faith—those who were hungering and thirsting for righteousness.” And, according to Matthew 11:25-26, Jesus considered both of these results successful and gave thanks to his Father for each of them.

As for the matter of interpretation, MacArthur insists that each parable has a clear and objective meaning Jesus meant to convey. “If it seems the stories Jesus told are capable of endless interpretations and therefore devoid of any discernible objective meaning, that’s because truly understanding them requires faith, diligence, careful exegesis, and a genuine desire to hear what Christ is saying.” He also teaches the helpful and often-abused principle that “the symbolism in Jesus’ parables is never thickly layered, and rarely even multidimensional. Trying to find meaning in every story element is an exercise in bad hermeneutics. Even the most detailed parables (like the good Samaritan and the prodigal son) usually teach fairly straightforward, uncomplicated lessons. Minor elements in the story are not to be laden with spiritual meaning.” The reality is that “Jesus was the master storyteller. There is not a truism so familiar or a doctrine so complex that He could not give it new depth and insight through the telling of a simple story. His narratives epitomize the plain, powerful profundity of His message and His teaching style.”

Having explained how to interpret and teach parables, MacArthur goes on to do that very thing. Parables shines a light on Jesus’ stories and, through them, to the Savior who told them. It’s a helpful, enjoyable, powerful bo

By Brent Miller
I received this book before it was released as a gift from the Grace To You program. I devoured this book the first day I received it. This book is filled with historical background information that illuminates Jesus' parables. John MacArthur has taken a parable that I thought was simple to understand and illuminated it to mean so much more. There is more doctrine to some of these parables and I never caught it. John MacArthur does not go over every parable because he has covered the other parables in his other books (which he references in footnotes). Overall, this book was a great read and an addition to my personal library and I thank God for John MacArthur's ministry and pray he continues to teach, preach, and write.

Wonderfully Pastoral
By Kenneth G. Campbell III
John MacArthur is a machine. From his preaching to his writing we see how the Scriptures come to life and give us life through Him. He is always producing materials and resources for the body of Christ. John has written many books that have impacted me and I was really happy I got Parables because it is excellent. It’s excellent for a number of reasons.

Through the book John works though a number of different parables whiles incorporating the culture and surrounding people and themes into every chapter. If you have ever gotten a book on parables and just thought there wasn’t enough content, John won’t disappoint. I feel like he thoroughly works through each parable and sets you up with a proper interpretation and tips and tools for your future study of Scripture.

Something John does that, to me, is sometimes missed in books like this is the pastoral care for the readers that John incorporates. His study on the parables are personal. They make you feel like they were directed to you.

One of my favorite parts of this book is the cover. They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but this cover is one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. The cover of this book is a lamb. An over the top dirty lamb and it’s just gorgeous. If there is a book cover award, Johnie Mack needs to win that award!

I would recommend this book for study, reference, or devotional purposes. It’s a wonderful book, not too long, but incredibly detailed and lovely in nature.

The Legend of Barney Thomson, by Douglas Lindsay

Barney Thomson—an awkward, diffident, Glasgow barber—lives a life of desperate mediocrity. Shunned at work and at home, unable to break out of a 20-year rut, each dull day blends seamlessly into the next. However, there is no life so tedious that it cannot be spiced up by inadvertent murder, a deranged psychopath, and a freezer full of neatly packaged meat. Barney Thomson’s  uninteresting life is about to go from 0 to 60 in five seconds, as he enters the grotesque and comically absurd world of the serial killer.

Just "okay"
By Megan N
This book wasn't that great, to me. I didn't find it particularly interesting, and it was pretty easy for me to guess what was going to happen next. I suppose there were a few humorous parts but not "slap my knee" funny. Our main character, Barney, is quite dull and while I know that is a major part of the story, his normal-ness didn't add anything to the irony of the story. The book was written well and there weren't very many grammatical/spelling errors. I don't regret reading it, but the plot just didn't do it for me.

A Different Read
By Gisel
Being a Glasgow girl, well actually a 67 year old, I could really relate to this book. But not the murders, of course!!! Douglas paints such a real picture of our Dear Green Place from the grey characters to the non stop rain. It was funny and gruesome at the same time.

Our hero is a serial killer
By Ken
Our hero is a serial killer. Not in the sense that Dexter is a serial killer. More like Barney Fife meets Mr Bean.

A great dark sense of humor!

"Medjugorje is a winner - a treat for lovers of historicalfiction and mystery... an accomplished, atmospheric and thoughtful novel."  - NBC-TV

"Bitterness, suffering and guilt are bleak subjects, yet in "Medjugorje - The Final Prophecy", author Peter Danishskillfully weaves these themes into an entertaining - and quite wise - novelabout the nature of faith, forgiveness, and ultimately, hope. Medjugorje is a Winner
By Val Blair
A treat for lovers of historical fiction and mystery. Through the surreal landscape of war-torn Bosnia-Herzegovina, Peter Danish weaves a captivating narration of five men on differing paths who come together in an unlikely place by happenstance, in search of a secret treasure.

The story is moving and the characters are well fleshed out – I found myself emotionally tied to each one of them and their lives.
Danish rises to this challenge with great skill in this accomplished, atmospheric and thoughtful novel. I highly recommend Medjugorje and look forward to reading his future work.

There is a powerful journey that takes place and Danish does a good job taking readers on the path to Medjugorje
By Amazon Customer
Danish writes with such fluidity that Tony's story becomes the readers own personal journey. These five characters are so well developed, their stories so compelling and varying, that even though they differ vastly their stories become one. At one point readers will feel compelled to root for one character, then as their pasts unravel and new secrets are revealed, things will change. There is a powerful journey that takes place and Danish does a good job taking readers on the path to Medjugorje.

Peter Danish has again demonstrated a keen understanding of human nature and the talent to hold his readers enthralled by lyrical writing and and an enveloping grasp of time and place. What the reader ultimately comes away with in this transcendent work is that piety can trump avarice. His previous THE TENOR was a stupendous work, yet with MEDJUGORJE he has raised the literary bar even higher.

The third and final installment of James Dunn's magisterial history of Christian origins through 190 C.E., Neither Jew nor Greek: A Contested Identity covers the period after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. through the second century, when the still-new Jesus movement firmed up its distinctive identity markers and the structures on which it would establish its growing appeal in the following decades and centuries.

Dunn examines in depth the major factors that shaped first-generation Christianity and beyond, exploring the parting of the ways between Christianity and Judaism, the Hellenization of Christianity, and responses to Gnosticism. He mines all the first- and second-century sources, including the New Testament Gospels, New Testament apocrypha, and such church fathers as Ignatius, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus, showing how the Jesus tradition and the figures of James, Paul, Peter, and John were still esteemed influences but were also the subject of intense controversy as the early church wrestled with its evolving identity.

Comprehensively covering an important, complex era in Christianity that is often overlooked, this volume is a landmark contribution to the field.

Craig S. Keener

“Here we have on full display the distilled fruits of decades of research and engagement by a mature scholar of the first rank. James Dunn engages a vast range of secondary and primary literature in a way that only a senior scholar can do, synthesizing the best insights, critically and meticulously evaluating all sources and hypotheses, and producing a masterpiece of erudition that will be foundational for future work on the subject. While respectfully interacting with a range of scholarship, this work also forges its own noteworthy conclusions, in the process sometimes challenging conventional assumptions from across the spectrum of scholarly opinion.”

“Calling this substantial book his ‘farewell to the large undertakings of my writing career,’ James Dunn compellingly engages developments in Christian identity from the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 ce into the late second century. Neither Jew nor Greek is awe-inspiring in scope and majestic in execution. Like a peerless master taking his craft to new heights, Dunn accomplishes his task with the clarity of thought and expression that has been a hallmark of his long-standing career. This is both sweet vintage and astute valediction.”

J. R. Daniel Kirk
— Fuller Theological Seminary
“In concluding his magnum opus, James Dunn offers a powerful account of how the earliest Jesus tradition and its various renderings by Jesus’ first Jewish followers came to shape and be shaped by the movement that developed from 70 to 200 ce. Students and scholars alike will find much to appreciate, argue with, and learn from.”

What is there not to admire in the careful scholarship ...

What is there not to admire in the careful scholarship of Professor Emeritus Dunn. He has devoted his life to untangling the threats of Christian Origins. I shall study this book -- and the other two of the trilogy -- until I die. James Garcia

Not exactly what I had imagined
By doncecca
Actually ... I don't regret having bought the book. There are always a lot of good things and useful insights in J. Dunn's writings. Nevertheless it's not exactly what I had imagined, supposing this third volume of Christianity in the Making would continue the story from where it left off at the end of the second volume. Instead almost half of the book is spent to repeat many things present in the previous books of the trilogy, and the rest does'nt look exactly as a "story". In any case...
The attempt to prove the birth of church's priesthood out of thin air in the end of the first or early second century is almost pathetic and supported by a set of contradictions difficult to find elsewhere. But of course, if the thesis of the work is summarised by Kasemann's quotation mentioned at page 816, one cannot expect anything else.
For the extent of the subject the volume is not so big, considering also it uses a font size larger than in the previous two books of the series.
Moreover ... It makes me smile the fact that the autor ignores completely! (and, of course, purposely) the magnum opus of J. P. Meier "A marginal Jew", and this, may be, because on the other side Meier had dealt almost spitefully, in p. 23 of his 4° volume, with the first Dunn's volume :) :) :)

Small Groups That Succeed

Small groups are the key to impacting lives in your church. But a healthy small-group environment - one that fosters meaningful, lasting connections - doesn't just happen. So pull up a chair. Let's talk about how to make it happen.

Bill Willits and best-selling author Andy Stanley share their successful approach, which has resulted in nearly 8,000 adults becoming involved in small groups at North Point Community Church in Atlanta . Simply put, the five principles clearly described here have passed the test. This is not just another book about community; this is a book about strategy - strategy that builds a small-group culture.

Creating Community shares clear and simple principles to help people connect into meaningful relationships. The kind God desires for each of us. The kind he uses to change our lives. Put this proven method to work in your ministry, and enjoy the tangible results - God's people doing life together.

"The small-group program at North Point Community Church is not an appendage; it is not a program we tacked on to an existing structure. It is part of our lifestyle. We think groups. We organize groups. We are driven by groups. Creating Community contains our blueprint for success. And I believe it has the potential power to revolutionize your own small-group ministry!" (Andy Stanley, Story Behind the Book)

Creating Community flows out of the North Point Community Church story. The message here is not just some new small-group program but reflects a passion lived out and implemented in their church from the very beginning. Even with phenomenal growth, the church has stayed true to its commitment to small groups and has fine-tuned its ministry process into one of the most unique and effective models in churches today.

A Highly Useful Book for Small Group Pastors
By George P. Wood
When I first began reading Creating Community by Andy Stanley and Bill Willits, I was not impressed. Subtitled "5 Keys to Building a Small Group Culture," the book makes its points by means of simply structured sentences, personal anecdotes, and common-sense business principles. As an "armchair intellectual" who prefers "idea" books to "application" books, I glided through the pages of Creating Community in about an hour. About half way through, I realized that Stanley and Willits were teaching simple principles that I needed to learn and apply in my own ministry. Although I never set out to become a small groups pastor, I have become one for my church. Unfortunately, to be perfectly honest, I do not consider myself a very good small groups pastor. Why? Because I prefer to sit among abstract ideas - the native environment of armchair intellectuals - rather than to walk beside practical realities. I am good at writing curriculum and at personally leading a small group, but I have a hard time managing people and processes. Stanley and Willits offered several helpful insights about how to do the latter. Let's start with the five keys mentioned in the subtitle. They are (1) people need community, (2) leaders need clarity, (3) churches need strategy, (4) connection needs simplicity, and (5) processes need reality.

People need community - especially Americans, whom George Gallup has described as "among the loneliest people in the world." This is somewhat ironic, given that Americans are around other people all the time. But having company is not the same thing has achieving community. "We live and work in a sea of humanity," the authors write, "but we end up missing out on the benefits of regular, meaningful relationships." God created us to have those kinds of relationships, beginning with our spouses but extending to others as well. "Isolationitis" - the absence of meaningful relationships - leads to "lost perspective," "fear of intimacy," "selfishness," and "poor health." To the extent that we are isolated from others, we are also less like God - a Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. "Just as He exists in meaningful relationship, so are we to exist in this quality of relationship as well," for we are created in God's image (Gen. 1.26-27). And Christ saved us so that we would live in the meaningful relationship called the church. Without authentic community, the world cannot know that God sent Jesus to save it (John 17.21). In the words of Francis Schaeffer, "Christian community is the final apologetic."

How do we - "we" meaning pastors and lay leaders - move from theology to practice, from vision to reality? Stanley and Willits' second key is this: Leaders need clarity. North Point Church in Atlanta, where the authors minister, answered that question by means of three others. The first question is "What do you want people to become?" This question provides "clarity of mission." The mission of North Point is "to relationally connect with people in such a way that it encourages them to follow Christ." The second question - "What do you want people to do?" - clarified North Point's "understanding of spiritual maturity." Focusing on the Great Commandment to love God and to love neighbor as self (Matt. 22.37-40), North Point answered this question by focusing on "intimacy with God"; "influence with insiders," i.e., Christians, members of the church; and "influence with outsiders," i.e., the unconverted. The third question is "Where do you want people to go?" This question clarified North Point's strategy, which is to get people "into a small group." Stanley and Willits explain the rationale for this strategy: "We have found that the best place for sustained life change to occur is within intentional relationships. And like many church leaders, we fell that the best place for encouraging intentional relationships is a small group. While we believe that other approaches can work, we think the small-group model works best."

That leads us to the third key: Churches need strategy. The founding members of North Point, which included the Stanley and Willits families, decided that they wanted their church to be characterized by one word: relational. This word not only captured their church's overall mission but also its daily operating strategy. "We want to do ministry in the context of relationship in communities, not on committees," the authors write. Why? Because groups: (1) "support our evangelism strategy," (2) "enable more people to serve," (3) "help develop authentic community," (4) "offer maximum flexibility," (5) "allow us to be better stewards," and (6) "remove the primary limits to growth." Not just any kind of group provides these benefits, however; only certain kinds do. Stanley and Willits call them "closed groups," which are groups that form and meet "throughout an eighteen- to twenty-four-month covenant period" without adding new members, "unless the entire group signs off on it." North Point has found that closing their groups contributes to the development of the "ABC's of group life": accountability, belonging, and care. Because the groups are closed only for a season, however, they do not become permanent cliques that are hostile to newcomers.

How do you get people into such groups? The fourth key answers this question: Connection needs simplicity. The chapter titles of this section of the book are particularly helpful: "create steps," "make them easy," and "try before you buy." The authors describe the steps under using the "'Foyer to Kitchen' strategy" of North Point. "Foyers" - such as the Sunday morning worship service - are designed to "change people's minds about church." "Living rooms" are "medium-sized environments designed to change people's minds about connecting." And" kitchens," i.e., small groups, are designed to "change people's minds about their priorities." Stanley and Willits write that "90 percent [!]" of the people who join small groups at North Point do so after attending GroupLink, "a two-hour event where people connect with others in their geographic area and stage of life to start a community group." And North Point is firmly committed to a short, initial small group experience of no more than eight weeks' length. If the group gels after this initial experience, it can commit to meet regularly over a longer period of time.

How do small group pastors and lay leaders manage the overall process of a small group ministry. Stanley and Willits' fifth key states, Processes need reality. For the authors, this means setting "realistic expectations" for small group leaders, coaches, and directors. It also means "train[ing] more for less." North Point leaders are routinely trained in six essential practices: (1) "Think life-change," (2) "cultivate relationships," (3) "promote participation," (4) "replace yourself," (5) "provide care," and "multiply influence." In the penultimate chapter, Stanley and Willits urge churches to keep their strategy "simple," "visible," "valued," "resourced," and "modeled" (by leadership).

As I noted at the outset, I wasn't impressed when I began reading Creating Community. "Armchair intellectuals" such as me prefer big, complex ideas to simple, usable ones. But as I continued to read the book, I realized that a lot of serious thinking underlay what Stanley and Willits had written. Moreover, I realized that if I paid attention, I might improve my own ministry by using their "keys" to diagnose and fix what is wrong with the small groups ministry I myself lead. So, in the end, thank you, Andy and Bill, for writing such a highly useful book for me and other small groups pastors.

Good stuff, if not earthshatteringly profound...
By Chad Oberholtzer
I love the work that Andy Stanley and Bill Willits are doing with small groups at North Point Community Church in suburban Atlanta. I purchased this book with huge expectations. Though I was slightly disappointed, there are a lot of gems to be found in this work.

One initial complaint is the fact that Andy Stanley basically wrote an introduction to the book, and Bill Willits wrote the rest. I have no problem with that, as Willits is the small groups guru at their church. However, I think it's unfortunate that they felt the need to slap Stanley's name as a co-author, presumably for marketing purposes. In any case, this is Willits' book. And having heard him speak several times before, that's good enough for me. He may not have Stanley's name-recognition, but he is the small groups guy whom I respect the most.

The book is basically the story of small groups at North Point, starting at the beginning and bringing us to their current organizational structure. It's a pleasant, easy read, and Willits makes no claims that this is the universal "How-to" book for small groups. He admits, thankfully, that certain things will transfer to other churches, while other choices are specific to their situation. It's an insightful caveat.

Many of the ideas in this book are not new. The rationale for people's need for small groups is largely recycled material. If you want a more thorough "defense" of group life, read Donahue and Robinson's "Building a Church of Small Groups" or Frazee's "The Connecting Church."

However, the next several sections were filled with accessible and applicable points, even if many can be found in other small groups resources. North Point is basically doing two things that are totally different from the mainstream of small groupdom. First, they have abandoned the meta-church model of coaches as an intermediate role between small group leaders and staff. It flies in the face of conventional small group strategy, but I love the explanation and result.

The other thing that North Point does differently than most is to require closed groups (for 18 to 24 months, at which time groups are expected to multiply and welcome new folks). I am less compelled to pursue this approach, but again, Willits provides a clear explanation for why they do it.

At the end of the day, this is a simple (not surprisingly, as simplicity is one of their key tenets) but helpful tool. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get charged up about small groups and think through a few things differently than what is typically presented by most small group experts. I look forward to further work by Willits!!

Don't Discount This Book Too Quickly

Most "How To" books run the risk of taking readers down one of two bumpy paths. Either the reader becomes excited and tries to obey the book right down to the "letter of the law" and ends up creating a mess. Or else the reader yawns, tosses the book in a growing stack with other "How To" books and doesn't create anything at all.

Some of the ideas in this book probably will not work anywhere outside of North Point Community Church. After all, the ideas were developed for this specific church, and even North Point continually revises its programs. Don't copy this book. It just won't work the same for you.

Other ideas are innovative and valuable. Small group ministry has been around since Jesus called his 12 disciples. John Wesley built the huge Methodist movement on the structural foundation of small group ministry. Pastors salivate at the thought of using effective small groups. The problem is that most small groups are not effective. They become in grown. They fail to divide in life as easily as they divide on paper. They wander from the point and degenerate into globs of protospirituality. This book presents ideas to help keep those terrible things from happening.

Wich ideas are which? Which ones should be overlooked at the present time and which are valuable? Look the book over. Use those portions that meet your needs and ignore the rest. Don't throw the book away. Given time, you may want to consult it again. Given the right time and right circumstance, all these ideas might be valuable!
