Novel Concept, by Dan Fiorella

A young aspiring writer decides to live a more exciting life so he'll know more stuff because he's been told a writer has to "write what you know."

Max Federman goes through a series of unfortunate adventures attempting to sneak into the lives of the rich and famous so he can write a best-selling pot-boiler of a novel. Yeah, it's a bad plan from the get-go as he stows away on a cruise line. Sure, he meets a lovely French girl, but he also has to deal with an annoying US Senator and a serial killer.

Knocked off the boat during a struggle, Max is rescued and brought to France, where he gets involved in a undercover caper, attempting to thwart a crime kingpin’s plan to open up a new drug pipeline to America. Here he crosses paths with an old school buddy, a sexy moll, and a really cranky banker.

Naturally, he winds up in a Turkish prison, and finds himself up against cut throats, murders, and supernatural powers that he may or may not be responsible for. Nevertheless, various prison gangs are vying for control of them.

From there, it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to the odd little kingdom of Lacertosa. Here, Max winds up on both side of a coup d'état. Sure he admires the goals of the revolutionaries and is smitten with a pair of twins he’s been teamed up with, but he also gets to meet the lovely princess of the country.

It’s a wide and wacky road trip that breaks the rules (and often the fourth wall) to tell the tale of the unbreakable Max Federman, a young man who attempts to hitchhike his way into the literary realm a with only a notebook and stubby pencil, trying to come up with a great American novel concept that contains the stench of hilarity.

"Write what you know."
-Some Writing Guru

Max Federman is an aspiring writer who has suddenly taken it into his noggin to write a trashy potboiler of a book about the rich and infamous in order to crash the best seller list.  The only problem is he knows nothing about the rich or infamous.  So, Max heads out on the road trip of his life, albeit one that mostly involves boats, trains and planes.  So, actually, there are only a couple of actual roads.
His quest for expanded life experiences triggers a series of unfortunate events, with Max stumbling his way through run-ins with crazed serial killers, bizarre underworld criminals, revolutionary zealots and a swash-buckling kingdom. Along the way he runs into a series of sassy lassies who get Max all hot and bothered.
But Max keeps it all up to date in his writer's journal and he is positive it'll be a best seller, if he lives to tell the tale.

Nearly the Funniest Novel I've Ever Read
By DrPat
Like so many New Yorkers, Max Federman has a book in him. The problem is he wants to write a hit, but the book his publisher wants is a non-starter for the best-seller list. Max reads those book lists; he knows what readers buy in droves. They want "rich-girl meets poor hunky guy and falls in love." They want "unknown beauty captures heart of royal heir." They want "daring spy assists voluptuous twins win revolutionary glory."

They want fantasy from a world Max has never dreamed of, let alone lived.

Even though Max DOES live in a section of NYC "inhabited by many aspiring creative types: writers, actors, musicians, performance artists, and, up until the tragic yet much appreciated Great Pantomime Massacre of ‘08, mimes."

Rather than write the book he has thoroughly researched, the one his publisher desires, Max sets out to research the popular novel concepts instead. Armed with the wit that Max Shulman used to give all his protagonists, Federman boards a cruise ship to Paris (persistently listed as "S.S. Gauche, bound for France" in the text), and proceeds to step into every social awkwardness a clueless stowaway can find.

He attracts the love of the "heiress to the French frogleg fortune," Candice LaPortune, who has chosen "an idyllic ocean cruise over the whirlwind body cavity search that was air travel." His shipboard romance novel is well underway until he is side-tracked by murder, and being tossed overboard into a crime novel.

Max barely gets into the drug syndicate *mileau* (in France, naturally. home of the "French Connection") before being pitch-forked into a psychic-prison-escape scenario in Turkey, from which he is railroaded into revolutionary intrigue in the near-kingdom of Lacertosa. You know, where Lucky Lindy landed first, before he realized it wasn't France.

My favorite comic novel of all time is "Barefoot Boy with Cheek" by Max Shulman. What Shulman did for college life, Fiorella has now done for writing a popular concept novel.

"Novel Concept" lies for me in the field of second-place ties for comic best, after Shulman's classic, alongside any adult novel by Christopher Moore or Dave Barry. And Fiorella may be edging Moore and Barry slightly.

Don't read this unless you enjoy living life on the edge and laughing about it! Super funny and lots of fun, the protagonist is a lovable goofball. I received this book at no cost from Amazon for my Kindle. I enjoyed reading the story, and want to thank the author for so generously providing this material free of charge.
