Knowing the Will of God

Many Christians grapple with knowing the will of God. The great news is, knowing the will of God isn't rocket science. He makes it clear in the every book of the Bible. In this book, you'll discover the will of God through Paul's letter to the church in Corinth. The same lessons they learned can be applied to YOUR life today.

Discovering the Will of God through 2 Corinthians

The book of 2 Corinthians opens with the words, "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God. . ."

The words, "by the will of God" are important, because they indicate that Paul was an apostle of Jesus Christ, not by his own doing, but by the will of God. In short this means that Paul didn't appoint himself but instead was named by God to be an apostle.

We are all appointed by God to do something (or perhaps many things). When we do the things that God assigns to us, we experience many benefits.

The book, By the Will of God: Christian Devotional Readings from 2 Corinthians, explores the will of God as revealed through the book of 2 Corinthians, and the benefits you'll experience as a result practicing them.

Here are a few of the benefits of doing the will of God to consider:

God equips you to do the things He calls you to do.

You may feel inadequate to do many of the things that God calls you to do. But if it’s truly a calling from God, He'll equip you to do the work.

You’ll succeed when you act based on the will of God.

Just because you do the will of God doesn’t mean that everything will go great for you. Paul suffered many hardships while doing the will of God -- and you will, too. But you WILL find success.

You can move forward with confidence when you do the will of God.

Since God equips you to do His will, and since He’ll be with you every step of the way and ensure your success as you continue to follow His lead, you can move forward with confidence.

Doing the willing of God blesses others.

When we do the will of God, God not only blesses us; He also blesses others that are impacted by the work we do.

Doing the Will of God advances God’s Kingdom.

You will be blessed and bless others by doing what God’s appointed you to do. But the ultimate purpose in doing the will of God is that His Kingdom is advanced EVERY time you act according to His will.

If you've ever grappled with living a life according to God's will, this book is for you.

We all have struggled
By CCGonzales
" By the Will of God" covers situations that are very real and many Christians face. I started out with a practical mind set toward this simplistic devotional and ended up immersed in the complex emotions it brought to the surface in me. If we Christians are truly honest, we have all questioned God during hard times. We have all not been as faithful as we should with sharing our faith with others. We have all faltered in giving forgiveness. Rebecca Livermore shares wonderful uncomplicated ways to help you keep focused in seeking God. She provides scripture that applies to the many struggles we wrestle with in life, helping you find answers. I was given a free copy of this book for the review purpose, and found out it helped renew a hunger in me to be more devoted to daily reading the Word. Reading the Bible is truly our best instruction. This wonderful devotional is great for any new convert or the seasoned Christian. I highly recommend you try it and see!

An encouraging, inspiring read
By Beth M Jones
An inspiring, practical read. I loved how Rebecca encourages you to establish a quiet time that works for you and sticking with it as much as possible, and going deeper with God--not just an empty spiritual exercise. This book for ordinary believers, "Christians who love Jesus and the Bible, who may or may not have attended seminary, and probably aren't fluent in Greek or Hebrew", will relate to and be able to carry out its practical, timeless advice, such as: "Don't get hung up waiting for a lightning flash or an audible voice...start with small things that you feel God may be calling you to do." I related a lot to some of Rebecca's hardships, like her "Crushed" chapter, where she shared how poor her family was after they did a missions trip to India to follow God, struggling with rent, the electric bill being overdue, and not even being able to pay for necessities. She is transparent and real, and this makes her writing powerful. She shares the great reminder with the reader, "Instead of placing your confidence in humans, including yourself, put it on God. Quietly depend on Him as you go about your work each day. Quietly depend on Him as you work through relationship issues, as you deal with finances, or as you seek the next promotion at work." I loved her "Praying the Word" and "Applying the Word" sections at the end of each chapter, such as making a list of 5 hard things you've gone through and how you made it through even when you doubted, to build your faith in your current struggle. Great book!

Real, Vulnerable and Encouraging!
By David R
I am a big fan of devotionals that have something truly unique to them - something that sets them apart from every other work out there. This book is a great example of one of those rare gems.

For me, the best part of this book was the author's voice and vulnerability. The author told many of her own personal stories and lessons she learned. I appreciated this because of brought a reality to the text that is often missing in most devotionals. I didn't feel like I was being preached at. Instead, I was sitting with a friend learning about God and life and feeling encouraged along the way.

Rebecca's grasp of Scripture is strong and accurate. You can tell she took the time to make sure what she was saying was both truthful and applicable.

The book has a variety of themes, so even if you don't bond with every lesson, I promise you there will be some that really stay in your mind. For me, it was chapter 3 (crushed and overwhelmed) which stayed with me even after I finished the book.

If you're looking to learn more about the Corinthian letters, or just need a new daily devotional, I highly recommend you pick this one up!

From the Author
I was working on an action adventure screenplay when Max came to me and said he wanted to tell his stories. How could I refuse a purrsuasive cat like Max?
He started telling his stories and I wrote them down so humans could read them. Our partnership has grown over the years as Max tells his stories.
I hope you have as much fun reading the stories as I did listening to Max.

The Many Adventures of a "Real" Cat
By Pam Murrin
What I like most about "Tails from the Park" is that Max, narrator and main character, is a real cat. Of course, most felines aren't as reflective or verbal as he is, but his behavior is believably cat-like. The human characters are interesting, too, and the peek into life in a mobile home park is fair and accurate.
Adding to the credibility of the tale is the fact that Max the cat is an unreliable narrator. He doesn't always understand what is really happening with the humans around him. Listen in to the other characters, though, and you'll know what's going on.
The adventures Max goes on are varied, fun, and original. The ending to the story is absolutely satisfying. It made me smile.
Hurray for Max! Long may he roam!

Tails from the Park: Life from Twelve Inches High
By Gail Dennehy
Max is a great character and a huge hero. Reading "Tails from the Park," is like seeing the world from twelve inches off the ground. Make no mistake, Max isn't your run of the mill book animal. He's 100% cat and all male. As he pads around, you get to know the many residents of the park, both human and animal, that fill his world. You won't be able to help but fall in love with the way he saves the day again and again.

By Kathi Somers
Max is fun! I have read other books that purport to tell at least some of the story from a cat's point of view, but, while entertaining, they usually didn't really "sound" like a cat. I love that "Tails from the Park" really does sound like Max is telling the adventures. The very "catness" of it all is what I find fun. Go Max!!!

Danya: A Woman of Ancient Galilee, by Anne McGivern

Danya, a literate, independent-minded young woman, grows up in the village of Nazareth. Personal betrayals, social restrictions, and family tragedies crush Danya’s dream of fighting to free her people from Roman domination. Instead she is married off and lives as an outsider in the sophisticated city of Sepphoris, the Roman capital of Galilee. Danya struggles to write her own life, a story woven into the political, religious, and cultural conflicts of the tumultuous world of ancient Palestine early in the first century.
Her companions include some real historical and scriptural figures: Joanna, the wife of Herod’s chief steward; Judah ben Hezekiah, the leader of a Galilean insurrection; Jesus, before his public life; and his mother Mary, among others.
This extensively researched, fast-paced narrative has its roots in the study of the historical Jesus. However, Danya’s writings give voice to the silent women of that era. Her search for a meaningful life, though unique to her world, is both universal and contemporary.

Review
"Thoroughly researched and perceptively written, this novel . . . gives a convincing account of how families might have lived in first century Palestine. . . . The author skillfully interweaves the lives of fictional and real-life characters to spin a convincing yarn . . . that believably portrays Jewish life under Roman rule, the seeds of Christianity, and a woman's battles for survival." -- Kirkus Reviews

"Anne McGivern's excellent historical fiction debut gives a rare glimpse into women's lives in biblical times as well as the Jewish revolutionary movements that paved the way for the teachings of Jesus . . . McGivern weaves in historical information smoothly. . . and Danya's confiding first-person voice overcomes any distance readers might feel from an ancient setting. . . . Highly recommended for fans of Anita Diamant's The Red Tent and Geraldine Brooks' The Secret Chord." -- BlueInk Starred Review

"Danya is historical fiction in top form, on par with Philippa Gregory or Anita Diamant.  Though primarily a woman's story, it will appeal to anyone interested in well-written fiction or in the tumultuous history of today's Middle East."  -- Foreword Clarion Review  (5 Stars)

An engaging, unusual woman in tumultuous times
By Amazon Customer
Danya is such an engaging character in this gracefully written historical novel. We follow her from girlhood to maturity as she navigates the challenges of being a woman in the 1st century CE.
Danya is unusual in that she is literate and educated, thanks in large part to her father. However, that does not prevent her from being married off to a much older man and moving with him to the city of Sephoris, where she observes first-hand the cruelty and politics of the Roman occupation of the Jewish lands.

Danya's growth into womanhood intersects with the 1st century Jewish rebellions, as well as the followers of a charismatic young man named Jesus.

The real draw for me is Danya and how she learns, grows and survives in a tumultuous world. A happy side effect is what I learned about both day-to-day life and the history of that era in this meticulously researched novel. Although written for an adult audience, I also would recommend it to young adult readers who enjoy a fast-moving historical novel.

Danya: A Woman of Ancient Galilee, is rooted in significant historical research which McGivern uses to great effect to create a richly detailed, credible, and vivid world for the reader. Hoping for a Sequel, Danya is a compelling read
By Amazon Customer
Didn't want this book to end. Danya is a remarkable heroine in this page-turner. We grow along with her as we experience the perils of living in Roman-occupied Gallee, as well as her great passions borne of love and faith. Her story is beautifully imagined: the colors in the spider's web, the sounds within the light; the angels that smelled like baking bread. The characters are both flawed and compelling--people we can believe in and grow to love. Read this book: it will heighten your sense of beauty and maybe even awaken your faith.

PREFACE
Reimagined Lives
Time flies. You get up in the morning, do your thing all day long, and go to bed at night.

Then you wake one day to find that more than two decades have passed—in barely a blink of an eye. Rip Van Winkle himself would be mightily impressed.

The changes that have taken place over the last twenty years or so are staggering: technology that did not even exist in the final part of the twentieth century has come and gone; grey hairs that were only emerging then have achieved dominance and turned white. The external world and its internal counterpart are radically different from then to now as the river of time flows on incessantly.

It is the end of work as we know it. Age-old models of working have broken down in the space of two decades; career paths look nothing like they did in the days before phones got smart.

And yet, there are perennial concerns that have remained steadfast. Questions like “What was I born to do?” and “What is my calling?” continue to intrigue us. The ongoing search for answers and the processes by which we explore are as vital and consuming as ever.

As coauthors and friends, we embarked on a journey together more than twenty years ago. Our first book, Repacking Your Bags: Lighten Your Load for the Good Life, represented the initial step in that journey. The central message of Repacking was that each of us needs to develop his or her own vision of the “good life”—which we defined as “living in the place you belong, with people you love, doing the right work, on purpose”—and having done so, must then “repack our bags” so that the only burdens we carry are those that really assist us in getting where we want to be.

What we did not fully realize at the time was how much “repacking” would become a vital life skill—not only for us individually, but for us in the broader world of work and relationships as well.

By examining our own lives and asking ourselves the question that started it all in Repacking: “Does all this make me happy?” we discovered, individually and together, that many of the choices we had made around place, work, relationships, and purpose were indeed contributing to our overall sense of well-being. But some of them needed to be reimagined and repacked. As a result, we have both made a number of significant changes in our lives—some external and others of a more introspective kind.

Richard reconceptualized his vision of both his executive coaching practice and his work as a partner in Inventure—The Purpose Company so that he could focus more on writing and speaking. His deepening understanding of his own sense of purpose and direction has led him to write and collaborate on numerous books and articles, most recently, his coauthorship with Alan Webber of the AARP-supported book Life Reimagined.

Dave gave up his career as a corporate consultant to earn a graduate degree in philosophy. For more than a decade now he has been a full-time college teacher, while continuing to pursue his passion for doing philosophy with elementary and middle school students, work that resulted in the publication of his most recent book, Plato Was Wrong! Footnotes on Doing Philosophy with Young People.

In the more than twenty years since Repacking came out, we have each done a good deal of repacking ourselves. We have both moved several times; Richard remarried and has become fully initiated into the rites of grandparenthood; Dave became a father and has managed to pay off his student loans just in time for his daughter to start accruing hers. Our lives have continued to unfold and to present us with new opportunities for shaping our own visions of the good life.

Through it all, we have carried on the discussion that led to Repacking. We have remained deeply intrigued by what it means to live a good life and what people really need to be happy. Our conversations on these issues have ranged far and wide; we have talked with each other, with colleagues and clients, with young children and older adults. To our initial surprise, the one component of the good life that has consistently come to the fore has been work. While we have seen that relationships, place, and purpose are essential to people's overall sense of satisfaction, we have rediscovered the degree to which people's feelings that they are—or are not—doing what they were “meant to do” impacts their overall life fulfillment.

This reality, coupled with what we have learned by interviewing many people who are doing what they were meant to, led us in 2001, to write our second book together, Whistle While You Work: Heeding Your Life's Calling. Whereas Repacking was centered on an examination of all four components we considered necessary to the good life, Whistle focused on the challenge of discovering meaningful work.

And now, drawing upon that work and informed by another decade and a half of questioning and reflection, we have come to this book, Work Reimagined: Uncover Your Calling. The central notion we explore here is the deep hunger people feel to find meaningful work, work that allows us to express our gifts, and connects us to something larger than ourselves in purposeful ways—in short, the phenomenon of “calling.”

Uncovering our calling is what we have found best enables people to experience fulfillment in all phases of their lives. What may be most surprising is that if we can fully embrace our calling and consistently bring it to all that we do, then really for all intents and purposes, we never have to work again—at least insofar as we commonly identify work as something that is a chore, or which we only do to get paid. When we operate from a powerful sense of what we are called to do, then we are not, as the saying goes, simply making a living, we are making a life.

Writing this book together has been another incredible opportunity to express our callings. Each of us, in conducting interviews, facilitating seminars, teaching classes, having discussions, and putting our thoughts on paper has had the great good fortune of using our gifts and expressing our passions in service to something we value deeply. It has been a joyous experience even when—perhaps especially when—we were working the hardest. We offer this book as a token of our gratitude for being able to experience the power of calling in our own lives.

In order to live the life we imagine, we must continually reimagine it. In order to do work that makes such a life possible, we must regularly rediscover and reimagine our calling. Our ongoing conversations about calling have enriched our lives immeasurably and offer every promise of continuing to do so. We welcome you to participate in these conversations yourself and to experience the joy and fulfillment that follows from doing what you are called to do.

An impractical fantasy from authors not involved in the real job market
By Gloria Carthers
This is a knock off of what color is your parachute and other books of this type type that ignore the economic and practical realtiies and tout a fantasy. If ony you can go back and remeber your true self that you were when you were 11 you could discover your"calling" and voila! new you, happily woking and supporting yourself. If only it were that easy. The reality is, unfortunately, that we have neither a culture nor economy that supports that notion. I have a daughter who followed her passion to become a fashion designer, grautad at the top of her calss, had internships and was featured in a national paper and has not been abe to find permanent employment that enables her to suppoet herself despite expanding her geography, taking barely paid ineternships, etc. I am in the financial industry with respected credentials and lots of expereince and actually enjoy my work and am good at it, but also due to mass layoffs (which still come ) and discrimination against older workers, am not financially secure either. Many of my daughter's friends are taking administrative positions or waitressing after college as well. This is a book for people who write books to make money. I got absolutley nothing I can use out of it. Skip this

Dodging Satan: My Irish/Italian sometimes awesome, but mostly creepy, childhood, by Kathleen Zamboni McCormick

Gold and Silver EVVY winner! First Place in Religion and Spirituality and Second Place winner in Humor. What a combination. Dodging Satan is a humorous coming-of-age story. Bridget Flagherty, a student at St. Michael’s Catholic school outside Boston in the 60s-70s, takes refuge in wacky misunderstandings of Bible Stories and Catholic beliefs to avoid problems in her Irish/Italian family life. Her musings on sadistic nuns, domestic violence, emerging sexuality, and God the Father’s romantic life will delight readers. Bridget creates glorious supernatural worlds—with exorcisms, bird relics, Virgin Martyrs, time travel, Biblical plagues, even the ‘holy’ in holy water—to cope with a family where leather handbags and even garlic can cause explosions. An avid Bible reader who innocently believes everything the nuns tell her, Bridget’s saints, martyrs, and bony Christs become alive and audible within her. While the nuns chide her sinful ‘mathematical pride’ and slow eating habits, God answers her prayers instantly by day, but the devil visits nightly in the dark. Scenes run the gamut from laugh-out-loud Catholic brainwashing of children, to heart-wrenching abuse, to riveting teenage excursions toward sex. Young Bridget tries to make sense of a world of raging men and domestically subjugated women and carve a future for herself, wrestling with how God and men treat women. Her Italian female relatives—glamorous Santa Anna, black-and-blue Aunt Maria, sophisticated Eleanor with a New York ‘Fellini pageboy’—offer sensual alternatives to the repression of her immediate family. She prays fervently that “despite God’s bizarre treatment of married women... some [girls] might still discover ways to have a great time without being a nun.” Dodging Satan is the flip-side of l'Histoire d'une Âme by Saint Thérèse of Lisieux authored by a twentieth century American girl chomping on a blue-gum cigar while she talks to a confidant about God and sex.

Review
"Kathleen Zamboni McCormick welcome to the arena of the finest in contemporary comedic writing. Her future is assured." -Grady Harp, Amazon Top 100 Reviewer, Vine Voice

"There were times when I had tears rolling down my cheeks, such as when Bridget discovers the holy in the holy water. The child view of these things is expertly written--in fact, this bit of writing is possibly the most fascinating part of the book. 'Dodging Satan' promises to be one of those books that will change you in ways you'll never forget." -blog.johnmuellerbooks.com

"'Dodging Satan' manages to be both theological and comical. Indeed, it finds comedy in theology, especially when it's taking theology seriously. McCormick gives a real sense for what Andrew Greeley has described as the Catholic imagination, especially how it might shape a young girl with an ever-churning imagination." -Commonweal Magazine

"Epiphanies await Bridey throughout 'Dodging Satan,' and such well-drawn, jaw-dropping moments are significant for the ways that they promote a rethinking of the role of a 'good little girl.'" -Foreward Reviews

"Exceptionally well written with wit and weirdness, 'Dodging Satan' is a consistently compelling read from beginning to end. One of those unusual and unique novels, 'Dodging Satan' will linger in the mind and memory long after the book itself has been finished and set back upon the shelf." -The Midwest Review

"A humorous balance between religious rigidity and secular reality, 'Dodging Satan' is an ambitious narrative with a raucous rhythm... a wicked sense of humour, a wonderfully eclectic blend of characters. Highly original, highly recommended." -Book Viral

From the Inside Flap
Dodging Satan is a hilarious and heartbreaking novel of growing up in an Irish/Italian Catholic family filled with religious certainty and ethnic strife. It outdoes Mary McCarthy's Memories of a Catholic Girlhood in its wit, intelligence and irresistible mixture of realism and charm. It is simply a joy to read. Written in the voice of Bridget, a young girl caught between visions of Satan and sanctity, bewitched in a Catholic school that enforces ideals of the holy family and a home filled with lively, arguing relatives, it is captivating in its mixture of humor and grit. Bridget makes her way through Irish, Italian and religious patriarchies with the heart and mind of a gifted observer looking for her own form of grace. McCormick has written a brilliant work, filled with all the astonishment, allure and pitfalls of ethnic life today.
--Josephine Gattuso Hendin, Vulnerable People: A View of American Fiction Since 1945; Heart Breakers: Women and Violence in Contemporary Culture and Literature; The Right Thing To Do

A girl roiled by emerging sexuality, conflicting emotions toward parents, an extended family of abusive men and unhappy women who want better: the protagonist in this playful but gripping  tale draws on a hilarious mishmash of Catholic popular culture, creating outrageous cosmic narratives to make sense of it all. (God the Father pissed off at married women because Eve chose Adam over Him? Priceless!) Women who didn't have access to the Catholic Imagination while growing up will be jealous.
--Michael P. Carroll, Madonnas that Maim; Catholic Cults and Devotions, The Cult of the Virgin Mary

Tender and ruthlessly honest, Kathleen McCormick's beautiful first novel draws us into the world of Italian Irish Catholicism as experienced by its unforgettably wise and desperately innocent girl narrator. There's magic in this world--and while we are charmed by its glow, we are also repeatedly unsettled by the darkness behind that glow. We follow Bridget with trepidation, captivated by her vulnerability and her fierceness, trusting there's much to learn from her journey.
--Edvige Giunta, Writing with an Accent and co-editor of Personal Effects

If you want to know what spiritual bouquets are or why 'rules are so confusing here on earth,' read Kathleen Zamboni McCormick's deeply perceptive and slyly voiced novel about the challenges of girlhood Catholicism and the perils of having to overcome both pride and humility through the comical harrowing of an Irish-Italian family."
--George Guida, The Pope Stories and Other Tales of Troubled Times

From the Back Cover
Kathleen Zamboni McCormick gives us tales based on her own Irish/Italian childhood in the 1960s and '70s. Move over, Jean Shepherd! Sometimes glib, sometimes profound, the musings of her narrator, Bridget Flaherty, will have many a Catholic (and a lot of others) in stitches. As an impressionable child, Bridget is frightened by Catholic iconography--the snakes at Mary's feet multiply in her dresser drawers, and the devil is everywhere. But what do they really symbolize? Sexuality, clashes between her Irish and Italian families, even garlic and leather handbags are sources of family anxiety. For a while, Bridget creates supernatural worlds that resolve the tensions of real life, performing exorcisms, creating relics, and discovering the "holy" in holy water. Her panoply of Italian relatives--glamorous Santa Anna, abused Aunt Maria, sophisticated Eleanor with a New York "Fellini Pageboy"--offer sensual alternatives to the repression of her immediate family. As she discovers feminism from a "woman's-libber" neighbor and a stash of romance novels, her precarious religious world is threatened. Are her maiden aunts from Staten Island really lesbians? Are her uncles personally encouraged to be abusive by God-the-F? And what about her own mysterious virginity? Caught between the  Church and the larger world, Bridget's Virgin Mary helps her enter adolescence with a new awareness and independence.

Funny yet sad
By Phil Bolos
Dodging Satan by Kathleen McCormick is a unique coming of age story about a girl who has to deal with an Irish side and an Italian side of her family. The two sides clash on a regular basis over any number of topics, but are both so deeply religious that they can't help but having a happy middle ground. Kathleen deals with many different issues as a catholic school girl. Some are common for girls her age, such as maturity, a wild imagination that manifests itself in the form of re-tellings of biblical stories, and puberty. However, others are much more individual such as when she was forbidden for talking about her uncles in class because her family believed they survived World War 2 because they were wearing their crucifixes. Some of the highlights of the autobiography are when Kathleen believes that God must live in her Dad's shoes because his feet kept him out of the war, or that Satan moved into her room once she had to start sleeping in a double bed instead of a crib, or the many different things her mother would say that covered domestic abuse from her young child. While the majority of the story is written in a humorous manner, there is an undertone at times that leaves the reader feeling bad for this young girl and what she had to go through. Writing with both humor and sadness successfully are both attributes that prove you have found a good writer. Nice job Kathleen.

Dodging Satan Review
By R. Gene Turchin
I attended a literary event where I had the pleasure of listening to Kathleen McCormick read an excerpt from her book, "Dodging Satan". and knew I had to read it. It is a wonderfully coming of age book about a young girl, Bridget, who is conflicted an torn about her religious upbringing and the twists and turns of her sometimes funny and sometimes sad Irish/Italian Catholic family. McCormick fires shots across the bow of the Catholic schools but in a delightful, funny, irreverent and counter-intuitively also reverent way. I read sections to my wife at night (we are both products of Catholic schools many years ago) and she would laugh and giggle. It was sometimes difficult to read the passages to here without breaking up myself.
Her take on religious icons (glow in the dark crucifixes and Blessed Virgin Mary statues) in the early chapters are alone worth the read.
This is a book to pass on to anyone who attended Catholic school but also to any young girl at the cusp of adulthood.
Can't say enough good things about this book.

A 5-star read you won't be able to put down!
By Nanci Woody
Kathleen McCormick's "Dodging Satan" is a creative take on a gifted child's view of her dysfunctional family and Catholic doctrine, and how they all blend together in the child's mind. Young Bridget, in her childlike attempts to deal with family violence, develops stomach pains, imagines snakes in her bedroom, and God's wrath pouring down upon her. She questions aspects of the Church's teachings in an often humorous, more often sad, and always poignant, way. The child ponders such heady and familiar topics (though you probably haven't heard them told this way before) as virginity, temptation, nightmares, teen pregnancy, family strife, and she re-tells Bible stories in a creative, thought-provoking way - Adam and Eve, the Annunciation, salvation. I highly recommend Kathleen's book. It's a five-star read you won't be able to put down.

Hollywood Calling
By David Drum
My Inflatable Friend is a rags to riches to rags story, the saga of a computer-savvy fallen aristocrat, Rollo Hemphill. The story begins with Rollo far down in the dumps, parking cars in an exclusive Beverly Hills Hotel, yearning for a sweet sexy beautician who also works at the hotel. But the chump gets rocketed into the celebrity stratosphere when he cruises Rodeo Drive with a beautiful dummy, trying to make his girl jealous. Cruising Beverly Hills with a beautiful dummy becomes more than a joke when the tabs think the dummy who resembles a famous soap opera star's the real thing, and publicity happens.
The real-life soap opera star connects Rollo with the job of his dreams as a Top 40 disc jockey, enabling her to carry on her own secret lascivious affair, and, bingo, here's Rollo--squiring around every man's erotic fantasy in a hot car, eating five star food off Egyptian linen tablecloths and to all appearances kicking up his heels and coming alive inside a wild, sexy, but ultimately empty Hollywood dream. The things I liked about this book were its feel for Southern California and its brand-name magazine culture, and the likeableness of the bumbling ex-con hero. It's a cinematic book that feels a little like a speeded-up B&W 40s movie, and I can see it as something maybe starring Adam Sandler as Rollo and a sexy old Gloria Swanson type as Monica.

well written and funny
By A Customer
Let me be honest here. This is not a genre I'd normally read. I had to be dragged, kicking and screaming (very quietly) to it. But that said, there are times when you really don't want to work too hard: a hard day in the office, screaming kids, nothing on the tellie, and only cold water in the tap. Everett Jones take me away. My Inflatable Friend is well written and funny, with Rollo's first person confessional narrative making the reader a willing ally in the story. Rollo makes for an effective protagonist, between his self-deprecation, and his extensive vocabulary, which combines to form an almost comic effect. The book is pitched to a male audience in the main, and makes no apologies for that -- there's plenty of wish fulfillment, skirt chasing, and a definite male perspective. But the book isn't dumb either. The language is rich, the plot fast paced, and satisfying, and Rollo is a well rounded character that won't jar a feminist.

A bittersweet tale of Los Angeles
By Amazon Customer
At first I imagined this would be about hormone-addled young men downing entire kegs of beer in some squalid frat house.

I was in for a surprise. This book recounts, in a fast-paced, comedic, tongue-in-cheek style, the adventures of Rollo Hemphill (I know, I too wondered about that, but Rollo is not into marijuana, or any other kind of illicit drugs.)

We find Rollo working - or rather not working - as a car jockey at Wuthering Palms, a luxurious Los Angeles hotel. There the love of his life, Felicia, practices the art of cosmetology. Monica LaMonica, the waning soap opera star, lives almost incognito in a bungalow on the hotel grounds and patronizes Felicia's salon.

At first Rollo comes across as a young man without much of a past, present or future. Felicia won't give him the time of day, the lowest-ranking of his fellow employees don't even try to hide their contempt, and, as far as Monica is concerned, he might as well be one of the cockroaches that infest even the most palatial places in the city.

But we soon realize that there is more to Rollo than meets the eye. Rollo is the kind of young man who doesn't hesitate to go out on a limb for the sake of love, especially when that limb is too frail to bear his weight, no matter how light. In a nutshell, Rollo has already been in some trouble, and more trouble is coming his way.

Only at that point does Rollo's inflatable friend appear in the story. Its purpose is not, contrary to what the author slyly (mis)leads the reader to expect, solitary sexual gratification. I will not reveal what it is meant to achieve: no spoilers here.

So what did I not like in this book? The title and the cover. Not only do I find them misleading, but they probably turn off many potential female readers.

And what did I like? About everything else. It is the story of a young man who is at last turning into an adult, though he is not completely there at the end of the novel. Rollo shows that he is capable of professional achievement, true love, and even integrity. I understand that Gerald has sequels coming (titled Rubber Babes and Farnworth's Revenge.) I look forward to reading them and wouldn't be surprised if this tale were ultimately one of redemption. I do hope so, because I grew very fond of Rollo, in a sort of motherly, protective way.

Also, as an Angelena, I feel that the novel captures the spirit of the city in all of its glorious and maddening shallowness and complexity: the surgically enhanced stars, the ambitious immigrants, the arrogant waiters, the palm trees swaying in the breeze... On the silver screen, this would make a delightful bittersweet romantic comedy.

The year is 1915. Our heroine is Helen McGill, a thirty-nine year old spinster who assists her brother Andrew in the running of his New England farm. Andrew is a literary man, however, and since his books have become successful, his attention to the farm and his appreciation of the work that Helen does have diminished considerably. Helen takes pride in her domestic accomplishments but she doesn't like being saddled with all the work and she doesn't like being taken for granted. Enter our unlikely hero. Review
"Don’t let its small size deceive you..the story of a traveling bookseller and the unexpected love he finds when selling his bookmobile packs a big heart."
—Martha Stewart Weddings, 10 Classic Love Stories to Add to Your Reading List

Praise for The Art of the Novella
"I wanted them all, even those I'd already read."
—Ron Rosenbaum, The New York Observer

"Small wonders."
—Time Out London

"[F]irst-rate…astutely selected and attractively packaged…indisputably great works."
—Adam Begley, The New York Observer

"I’ve always been haunted by Bartleby, the proto-slacker. But it’s the handsomely minimalist cover of the Melville House edition that gets me here, one of many in the small publisher’s fine 'Art of the Novella' series."
—The New Yorker

"The Art of the Novella series is sort of an anti-Kindle. What these singular, distinctive titles celebrate is book-ness. They're slim enough to be portable but showy enough to be conspicuously consumed—tiny little objects that demand to be loved for the commodities they are."
—KQED (NPR San Francisco)

"Some like it short, and if you're one of them, Melville House, an independent publisher based in Brooklyn, has a line of books for you... elegant-looking paperback editions ...a good read in a small package."
—The Wall Street Journal

From the Publisher
“When you sell a man a book,” says Roger Mifflin, protagonist of these classic bookselling novels, “you don’t sell him just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue — you sell him a whole new life.” The new life the itinerant bookman delivers to Helen McGill, the narrator of Parnassus on Wheels, provides the romantic comedy that drives the novel. Published in 1917, Morley’s Þrst love letter to the trafÞc in books remains a transporting entertainment. Its sequel, The Haunted Bookshop, Þnds Mifflin and McGill, now married, ensconced in Brooklyn. The novel’s rollicking plot provides ample doses of diversion, while allowing more room for Mifflin (and Morley) to expound on the intricacy of the bookseller’s art. Introductions by James Mustich, Jr.

About the Author
Christopher Darlington Morley (1890 1957), American novelist, journalist, poet, and essayist, is the author of more than 100 novels, books of essays, and volumes of poetry. He was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford, and after returning to America, he was an editor for "Ladies Home Journal" and wrote for the "New York Evening Post" and other newspapers. He was one of the founders of the "Saturday Review of Literature", and as a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, he helped to found the Baker Street Irregulars, a group dedicated to the study of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s Sherlock Holmes works. He was also one of the first judges for the Book-of-the-Month Club. He is probably best known for his novel "Kitty Foyle", which was an instant bestseller and the basis for an Academy Award-winning movie in 1940, a radio serial, and a television series.

Should delight any bibliophile
By A Customer
This is a delightful book written in the early 1900's. The story is light-hearted and sentimental by today's standards, but it is a joy to read. It accurately captures an earlier time of this century when much of the population was isolated, and travel by wagon was the norm. It is enjoyable also for the small details of daily life, such as the references to gas lamps and the types of food eaten then. Some of the references are dated, but the thoughts on books and bookselling are as timely as ever. In fact, the last order I received from Amazon contained a bookmark that had a quote from this very book! The book is apparently hard to obtain; I was lucky enough to find it in our city library. And the best news is that the sequel, The Haunted Bookshop, is much better than this volume. So if you aren't totally captivated by Parnassus on Wheels, but like it somewhat, don't pass up the sequel.

For booklovers and romantics
By A Customer
Do you love books and learning? Do you delight in spending the afternoon browsing the stacks at the library? Are you in the mood for something light, amusing, captivating, and utterly delightful? Do you believe in true love, somehow, someway? If you said yes to most of these questions, then read Parnassus on Wheels. This is the most delightful and charming book I've come across in years. It brought tears to my eyes and made me laugh, and that doesn't happen often when I'm reading a book. In fact, I wish I had my own Parnassus and that I could travel the countryside selling books.
By the way, it's a page turner too! A great gift idea for a friend that loves to read. Enjoy.

A charming (and quick) read
By audrey frances
Christopher Morley's protagonist and narrator, a self-described forty-ish fat New England housewife, finds passion and adventure when Roger Mifflin, an itinerant bookseller, enters her life.

Originally published in 1917, the book reads quickly and leaves one satisfied. It is a charming portrait of a bygone era, and yet it captures those things which are eternal -- the love of learning, the power of human feeling, and the irresistible bond of kindred spirits.
