Secrets come in all sorts and sizes. Sometimes, they are as sweet as an engagement ring in a nervous boy's pocket. Other times ... they threaten to shatter your very self. With those kinds of secrets, it's difficult to judge if keeping it or telling it is more damaging. For years, I believed telling my secret was far more dangerous than anything imaginable. I was wrong. My daddy was one of the finest men Allen County, Tennessee ever produced. His brother, Hollis, was a devil from hell. I could never bring myself to tell Daddy or Mama the truth about what Hollis had done, and I was sure God counted me just as guilty. So I carried it inside and never told another living soul. Except for David Lee. Until that summer Phil's daddy died. Then everything unraveled.

Great read!
By Samantha
Paula Wiseman has a true gift with words. Through her books, I have found healing and restoration. This is the first book in her newest series, and it did not disappoint. I read it every chance I got, would've read it without stopping if life would've allowed. The emotions Paula awakened in me through her writing were raw, and the book proved to be very therapeutic. Thanks Paula for allowing God to minister to others through your writing.

A must read for those who suffer with the overwhelming depression and abuse
By Anne
This book was very raw and real. Written in a way where someone who deals with depression feels comfortable with hearing their own words echoed back. Most importantly, it shows Christ's love and unconditional acceptance of those who have been abused and depressed.

Another Fantastic Book!
By VickieO
Another fantastic book by Paula Wiseman.
As usual with Mrs. Wiseman, this book touched my heart, and opened my mind. All of her stories have educated me in some way, this one did as well. I don't want to give anything away, so I will just say I learned to feel more compassion for people whose behaviour doesn't necessarily make sense to me.
Additionally, it challenged my faith. It reminded me Who to go to in time of trouble, and encouraged me not to try to go it alone.
I enjoyed making the connections in my mind between these characters and those in previous books. I love that she stays in the same "universe" with her novels.
I have to confess, I had concerns about this one, as few authors can truly pull off an entire book written in the third person. However, this was so well done, I forgot that I don't like such writing.
This is not a surfacy quick read. I don't recommend reading it on your lunch break, or on an airplane, because it will touch your heart and you will cry. But I absolutely do recommend you read it.

Magic runs in Jane Howard's family. Her brother hunts werewolves, her sister vanished without trace twenty-five years ago, her mother is the worst witch of all, and her grandmother just might blow up the world - despite having drowned somewhere on the ferry route from Cairnryan to Largs.

Jane wants to be a good witch . . . but that's not all she wants.

Please give this funny, brilliantly written book a try. You won't be disappointed.
By Chris Calabrese
I stumbled upon this book completely by accident, read the semi-bland description and decided to download a sample to give it a shot. Best decision I have made in quite a while. Good Witch is excellent. Laugh out loud funny, poignant, raunchy and beautiful, it was a genuine pleasure to read.

What's it like? Think Tom Holt but with more care for the characters, tighter plotting and substantially better writing. And this is from someone who goes all the way back to Expecting Someone Taller.

The characters are sharply drawn. Even the most minor get starring roles if only for a moment. Many of the early chapters feel like their own short stories before the reader begins to see the connections. Some of the characters appear only for a few pages but we never feel cheated - they are drawn completely in a paragraph or two and leap from the page. Even the more central characters have their personality and motivation sketched quickly but deeply so that the book feels dense and interesting.

Everything is driven by the great writing. Flipping through the pages I kept getting caught up in different passages. One of the characters, a shy boy grown into an international assassin who loves his sister and only targets bad guys, kills a werewolf with this gem "As she crossed into the beams of the blazing headlights he fired ten shots at decreasing range, drowning-out the sound of the beast with a metal-chemical punch that coloured the night scarlet." But don't worry, the werewolf gets her revenge.

And here's another throw away bit of description "New Mexico was the Old West and the Old West didn't blink. Possessed of the kind of arid flatness that drove cowboys and lawmen mad, if the desert thought at all about astronomers, it didn't think much of them."

Seriously please try this book - it's too good to remain unread.

I loved the story
By Valon Cross
I rarely take the time to review books but this story and author deserve it. I loved the story, the dialog (it made me laugh more than once) and the characters-they are well developed and complex. There are plenty of plot twists to spice things up too. It did take a bit to get going but it was well worth it. Some of the scenes are etched in my memory.

Living with people makes life interesting...
By A Customer
I picked up this hilarious book while travelling in Australia and it made a truly wonderful literary companion to the trip. Birmingham's comically detailed and slightly skewed vignettes from his days as a "flatmate" are a riot to read regardless of their basis in fiction. The book begins with a story of a mysterious drug addict flatmate that was found dead with a falafel in hand and it just gets funnier from there. Birmingham's tone and joie de vivre makes for an enjoyable read. Because of the nature of the vignettes, reading this book in small doses is a great way to pass the time while waiting for the plane, or bus, or ferry, or just killing time between adventures. If you've ever lived with someone that was a less than desirable roomate/flatmate, you will undoubtedly enjoy Birmingham's twisted experiences and witty prose.

He [really] died with a felafel in his hand -non fiction art
By Clare
This book is somewhat astounding... I found it a few years ago in the non-fiction section of our local library, and I thought it was wonderful! It's not a novel, but it's writing style is a lot like one!
With a funny spin on life and emphasizing immense differences between people, John Birmingham details his share house experiences from right across Australia, with tales about the lives of other individuals. And the people he talks about are certainly individuals, with lives that are so different to what you thought was normal...
A lot of people would find this strange, but my teacher got our class to read an exerpt of this book as part of our year 9 classwork! It's a very honest look at group houses, I think is what she told us. This was about the same time that the movie came out, a couple of years ago.
Written with flair and in such a way that each paragraph could be a new chapter, this book fascinates, and finds a new perspective for an everyday part of life for young people across Australia. Hilarious, and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel (actually I read this a while ago and haven't been bothered to look much... but I am VERY keen to find the The Tasmanian Babes Fiasco, and writing this review has reminded me how keen!)

Tedious and Pointless
By BRETT ROBSON
This book has quite a reputation as a modern day classic of Australian literature but I found it tedious, in fact it took me months to finish it.

You might know someone that has an endless series of stories. It's fine if the stories are entertaining and told well; if you see that person occasionally and if the stories don't go on for too long. In this case the stories are about weird house mates and filthy homes and there's a whole book full of them.

There is no plot as endless characters come and go and the author moves from one disgusting house to another. Neither the homes nor characters are memorable and nothing happens in the entire book - well someone dies. We're never really sure which city he's living in or what he's doing for work. At the close of one chapter he decides to leave for London but the reader is left confused as in the next chapter he doesn't seem to be in London at all. Birmingham mentions his band in passing and we only get a few hints of this later on.

If these stories formed a story arc or we saw some sort of character development there might be a point. Or maybe some insight into that part of society back then. But all we have is an huge cast of people we don't care about and who did nothing of interest. We get practically no insight into these people and their lives.

Only in the last couple of pages does Birmingham try to summarise or put things into perspective, and then it's only that he's fed up and he's decided to sort himself out and get on with life.

Doodle Artist - Rabbits & Hares: A colouring book for grown ups, by Annette Rand

A colouring book designed for lovers of rabbits and hares, both pets and wild.

This book contains twenty original images of rabbits and hares in various styles and differing levels of intricacy, with two copies of each image to make forty pages to colour.

The images are printed on a single side of the paper to help prevent bleed-through. We recommend putting a sheet of paper or card between pages if using strong inks. The back of each page is marked with a cutting line to aid removal of pictures.

20 Designs x 2 Pictures each – Gorgeous Rabbits and Hares Coloring Book – printed on one side of non-perforated paper
By iiiireader
[[VIDEOID:848c33f6a14c998f391c8045c80de041]]This is a beautiful coloring book filled with designs of rabbits and hares. What is great is that the artist has provided two each of every design. That way you can test your colors on one copy, color the image twice, or simply share the second copy with a friend. The designs have plenty of “doodles” drawn into the images to make coloring these rabbits and hares a fun and colorful experience. I love this style of drawing as it allows my imagination to take over and create fun and colorful animals instead of simply realistic ones.

All of the design stop well before the binding. The designs are printed on one side of thin white non-perforated paper that is typical for books published by CreateSpace. The binding is glued but there is plenty of room for you to cut a page out if you choose to do so.

All of my markers bleed through and my gel pens either bleed through or leave a distinct shadow on the back of the page. My coloring pencils work well with the paper. I will use a piece of chipboard or heavy paper behind the page I am working on so I don't ruin the following page with leaking ink.

While I could wish for thicker, perforated paper, it appears that this is the quality that comes from CreateSpace (which is an Amazon company.) What I really like about the CreateSpace is it is a way that independent artists can get their work self-published. That way, I get a huge choice of design styles albeit with not the best paper.

Bunny Bonanza!
By c'est la vie
This is a wonderful colouring book for animal fans, especially those who love rabbits and hares. I already have the Butterfly colouring book by the very talented Annette Rand and am so pleased with this one. In a departure from the Butterfly one, this book has duplicate images to colour and is not as samey. Each image is not just a single rabbit.

So you get 20 original illustrations and another 20 duplications. 40 pictures for a reasonable price, how wonderful! The rabbits and hares are lovely and you get a good variety of images, from single animals to mandalas and the rabbits/hares are in a nice range of poses.

One thing to note is that if you like lots of highly intricate designs then this book may not be the best choice. I personally am quite happy to colour in not particularly intricate illustrations, and there is a enough of a variety of simple to more intricate designs to keep me happily occupied.

It is relaxing, imaginative and very high on the cuteness factor!

One thing that does let the Doodle Artist range down a bit is the quality of the paper which is rather average. It is not terrible but I always prefer nicer paper as it makes the colouring experience more enjoyable and I end up a bit more satisfied with the results.

However each image is on a single page so there is no risk of ruining another image. I often switch between pencils and fineliner pens when colouring, with some gel pens added into the mix too, and all work nicely in this book.

Each page has a scissor line too which is handy if you want to cut out your works of art ;)

Overall I would recommend this to anyone looking for lovely drawings to colour.

Personal Reflections and Practical Steps
By theperkster
It is an accomplishment to publish a book and I am in admiration of Mel for tackling the process head on.

This book reads like a personal journal, and that is a strength. It is filled with vulnerable reflections and practical tips.

Another positive is the tie in to Mel's website and the additional content you will find there. A lot of good stuff.

If you are stuck and feeling the need for some next steps, this is a good resource.

Chapel Springs Revival: With a Friend Like Claire, You Need a Gurney, a Mop, and a Guardian Angel, by Ane Mulligan

Everybody in the small town of Chapel Springs, Georgia, knows best friends Claire Bennett and Patsy Kowalski. It's impossible not to, with Claire's zany antics and Patsy's self-appointed mission to keep her friend out of trouble. And trouble abounds.

During an early morning discussion at Dees 'n' Doughs bakery with their ladies group, all Chapel Springs entrepreneurs, attention is drawn to the slackened tourist trade. With their livelihoods threatened, they join forces to address the town's revitalization in hopes of drawing back the tourists. No one could have guessed the real issue needing restoration is their marriages.

Claire, a pottery artist, stumbles through life with her foot in her mouth. When she became a Christian, she thought life and her marriage would be included in the new creation part. But her thighs are just as big, and her husband, Joel, is as ornery as ever. She's become nothing more than a sheet changer, a towel folder, and a pancake flipper. Her life is humdrum, and she's tired of being taken for granted.

Patsy has plans for her empty nest, plans that include a cruise ship. However, her husband, Nathan, continues to work long hours, and he's not talking about slowing down. In fact, he's not talking much at all. She's asleep long before he comes home each night. At first, she thought it was just because of tax season, but now she's not so sure. Something other than work seems to keep him late at the office every night. With the lines of communication closed, she'll have to find another way to reach him.

With their marriages as much in need of restoration as the town, Claire and Patsy embark on a mission of mishaps and miscommunication, determined to restore warmth to Chapel Springs and their lives. That is if they can convince their husbands and the town council, led by two curmudgeons who would prefer to see Chapel Springs left in the 50s and closed to traffic.

Mitford, With a Hilarious Twist
By M. M. Griep
Wow. Can I relate to Claire, the heroine in Chapel Springs Revival. Impetuous. Well meaning. Ridiculously clutzy. But most of all, as completely lovable as an over-eager puppy. You don't want to miss out on her grand adventure in whipping the somewhat shabby town of Chapel Springs into a sparkly tourist haven.

Debut novelist Ane Mulligan is sure to capture the attention of the reading world with this one! Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy, pour a cup of joe or your favorite tea, then park yourself on the couch for a fun-filled visit to Chapel Springs.

Chapel Springs is like coming home to the place you wish you were from…
By Donna's BookShelf
There’s so much to LOVE about this book! The characters are true-to-life (I’ve compared myself to several) and interesting — really interesting. And the town . . . what a wonderful, colorful, delightful place to live . . . at least after Claire, Patsy, Lacey, and the others work their magic on it.

After being declared “drab and dreary”, the ladies decide the town needs a bit of sprucing up, so they decide to get the other shop owners involved — and give Chapel Springs the revival it needs.

Weddings, marital issues, business concerns, friendships — you name it — the girls are knee-deep in it. I have a feeling they’re up to the challenge, but maybe you should read it for yourself and see.

When faced with adversity (including or marriages in need of some excitement — or at least encouragement), instead of throwing in the towels, they’re determined to find a solution.

Let me encourage you to read Chapel Springs Revival . . . it may be just what you need — to help you find the encouragement to face your problems head on!

Ane Mulligan brings Chapel Springs to life with humor, love, and lots of great characters. This is an excellent debut novel — and the first of [hopefully] many Chapel Springs stories. Stay with me for my review of the next book in the series, Chapel Springs Survival…

God bless you!

Reminds me of Mitford
By Jenny
I'm a fan of Jan Karon's Mitford series, and the town of Chapel Springs reminded me of Mitford. The story is, of course, very different (and Claire Bennett is definitely not Father Tim!) but as I read, I found myself getting that same warm feeling I get when "visiting" Mitford. Loved the clever business names--Dee's 'n' Dough's Bakery, Halls of Time antique store--and enjoyed getting to know the people who worked there. Feel like I've had a weekend away in a quaint mountain town.

Suspense in Big City Church
By Jaqouia3
"River of Fire" by Darrell Case, is a tale of Christian living in the 1880's. A young pastor, Adam Wakefield, from Apple Valley, Arkansas is offered a pastorate at the largest church in Chicago.

Adam's chance meeting with a member of the Chicago Market Street Church, leads to this offer. Though Adam loves his small church and his congregation in Apple Valley, he feels God's leading for him to accept this most exceptional opportunity.

Adam has no idea what big city life entails. Nor has he been exposed to the crime, corruption, downright evil he will find himself embroiled in once in Chicago. He finds both friends and enemies in this suspense-filled tale.

I loved this book. I could hardly put it down. It is a story of suspense, drama, romance, faith, the love of Jesus as well as of the power of the Holy Spirit and redemption.

I hope there will be a sequel!

I was provided a copy of "River of Fire" in exchange for my honest review.

Inspirational Fiction
By BillieKay
River of Fire by Darrell Case is my favorite of the books I have read by this author. The book is set in the 1880s. The main characters are a young school teacher and the pastor of a small rural church who is called to pastor the largest church in Chicago. The story line was so interesting that I read the book in one sitting…I just couldn’t put it down. There is an interesting reference in the story to D. L. Moody and Phillip Bliss. I hope the author writes a sequel. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for writing a review. If you like Christian Historical Romance with a bit of mystery, this book is for you.

Job Revisited
By Wes McIntyre
By the time I got to the end of this book I found myself thinking about the ancient story of Job. This book did not strike me as a memoir as much as intentionally selected portions of a person's intimate journal, a journal full of loss, pain and the existential struggle that anyone who suffers must engage. The 16 chapters are often raw but can also be beautiful, sometimes both at the same time. The author is transparent, penetratingly honest in her self examination, and frequently poetic in her reflections. Reading it was like going through the struggle with Lynn; entering the anguish and crying out with whispered breath the prayers for divine aid and frequently exhaling a sigh for the solace not easily found. The larger linear circumstances that often become the structure for plot are minimal in this book. Rather it reminds me, as a chaplain, of subsequent visits to a suffering patient who bares her soul, visit by visit, chapter by chapter with plenty of gaps in between but no less poignant for those gaps. Not infrequently the reflections here are represented in the images that surround Lynn's life; of earth and sky, wind, dark nights and severe weather that rages and but also brings warmth and comfort. I don't know what any particular reader would take from the experience of reading this account but I do know that if affirms what I have come to see in caring for those who suffer: often there are no answers, at least not the ones we seek; triumph never comes by avoiding the pain but by entering in and going through it; often one feels alone and yet finds that they are not and divine Presence brings unexplainable comfort to the human soul. This is a courageous woman who knows life is neither fair nor explainable but who has reached with faith for faith and found herself sustained, loved and kept by an unending love.

A Book for Our Time
By Victoria Woodworth
The Keeper of Me, by Lynn Schriner

Some books are a journey, for the author as well as the reader. In the best examples, the reader comes away with a sense of knowing the writer, and themselves, a little better; a feel, perhaps, of the author's hand in the work. The author, too, is left renewed and enlivened by the chosen path of sharing their own experience.
“The Keeper of Me”, by Lynn Schriner, is a book that suceeds brilliantly on both counts. It is the study of a life marked by grace, pressure, pain and redemption. Most of all, it is a portrait of a passionate lifelong relationship with God. A bright thread of gratitude runs through all its pages, even under the most painful of circumstances.
There have been writers and works who have stood the test of time for what their creations have to give us in the face of deep personal and shared suffering: Anne Morrow Lindbergh's A Gift From The Sea; C.S. Lewis's A Grief Observed or Surprised By Joy. It is this reader's opinion that The Keeper of Me is a book that can take its place among these: a source of courage and inspiration for all who suffer, all who question, and all who seek God's face in an increasingly impersonal and frightening world. Clearly, a book for our time.

Inspirational, encouraging and thought provoking and a highly recommended read!
By Jeff Burgess
Wow. What an incredible journey! Lynn allows the reader to enter into her world, to experience the trials and tribulations that life sometimes deals us. Far from being a depressing story, or a "woe is me, victim mentality", even though she experienced the same or even worse lows that many of us have had in some way in our lives, and even though she had understandable doubts and fears as she sorted through the "why's", she helps us embrace the positive growth that can occur when we keep our hearts and minds tuned in to God's bigger plan. It's not a religious, "cram the Bible or God down anyone's throats" type of book either. I identified with many of her trials in many ways.

The book transports you to a place where you can review and reflect on your own life, how you view what happens, and helps with positive encouragement that we really do have control, by watching our thoughts and how we assess what's happening to us in our lives. It helped me to realize how this moment in time is all we are guaranteed, and to embrace, value and love those around us in our lives even more, and to appreciate our valuable relationships, for tomorrow, on this earth, is never guaranteed. Highly recommended reading!

The Home Valley, Ohio

"Sarah, you won't believe who just drove in. Passing by, that's what he said. It's Jacob! In a fancy car, too. He's right outside the barn."

At her younger brother's words, Sarah Kauffman's insides lurched. She had once cared for Jacob, but since he'd been shunned, it was verboten for him to be here. No way she wanted to see her former come-calling friend, but someone had to get him away from Gabe and his buddy group. Her family had invited the young people for a barn dance tonight.

"If the kids won't tell him to leave, I will," Sarah said as she circled the long plank table laden with food. "He's a bad influence, and you youngie liet don't need that in your running-around days!"

She hurried outside and down the sloped approach to the barn, her eyes scanning the clusters of boys huddled by their courting buggies or the two cars someone had driven in, and beyond all that, with its headlights still glowing golden, Jacob's red car stood out like a beacon.

No, she thought, the glow was not where headlights should be, but higher, farther off, behind the car and buggies so that they stood out in stark silhouette.

She moved to the side and squinted across the dark distance. The glow was growing, wavering. It was coming not from something on her family's property but from across the newly planted fields that stretched to those of Bishop Esh.

Ignoring Jacob's calling her name, she pointed, stiff-armed, at the distant blaze of color, but Jacob must have thought she was gesturing for him to leave.

"Hey, just came to say hi to all my ol' friends, 'speci'ly you, an' I'm not leavin' till we talk," he slurred, but she hardly heeded him.

What was that strange light? The moon rising low on the horizon? Someone burning trash? No. No! The Esh barn, where she had begun enlarging the quilt square she'd painted there two months before…the Esh barn was on fire!

"Fire!" she screamed. "Fire, over there—the Esh barn! Does anyone have a phone? Call the fire department!"

Sarah lifted her skirts and ran through the scattered boys, past a smooching couple who jumped to their feet. She almost tripped over some beer cans on the grass. Smooching and drinking—now she knew why their guests hadn't spotted the fire.

She raced past their grossdaadi haus where her younger sister, Martha, was tending to their eighty-year-old grossmamm tonight, past the family garden and into the field.

Laboring through the rich, damp soil, she sank ankle-deep with each lunging step, once falling to her hands and knees, but this was the fastest way to get there, even compared to a buggy or Jacob's car. Schnell! Schnell, hurry, hurry, she urged herself. Human lives, the horses, the stored hay and straw, the old barn itself…and her bold painting of an Amish quilt square. She jumped up from her knees and clambered on, hearing voices behind her of others coming, too.

Out of breath, a stitch in her side, she ran on, to warn the Eshes—Bishop Joseph and his wife, Mattie, almost her second parents because she and their girl Hannah had been so close…. Were they home tonight? Already gone to bed? Their house looked dark, but the glow of kerosene lanterns didn't show sometimes. Didn't they know their livelihood, their future, was on fire? The flames seemed high in the barn, reaching downward as well as up. Maybe the firemen could use her painting ladders to spray water.

It seemed an eternity until she reached their yard, screaming, "Fire! Fire!" She prayed no one would be trapped in the barn, that they could get the work team and buggy horses out if they were in for the night. She knew that barn as well as her own. It was where she, Hannah and Ella had played as children, tended animals, the barn where the bishop had been brave enough after much discussion to let her paint her very first quilt square and then let her enlarge it when he saw how well the others were received.

Exhausted but energized, Sarah stumbled into the Esh backyard, her dress and hands smeared, clods of soil clinging to her shoes. The belching heat slapped her face. What had been a glow in the hayloft was now a red-andorange monster inside the barn trying to get out, licking at the windows, curling its claws around the eaves. Shouting, she beat her fists on the back door of the dark house, but no one came.

Turning back toward the barn, she saw that Jacob, Gabe and several other boys had followed her across the fields. Using someone's jacket to avoid burning their hands, they lifted the bar on the barn door and pulled it open. That only fed the flames, which made a big whooshing sound and drove everyone back. The beast's breath came hotter, orange fires from hell. She could see its fiery fingers reaching for the pattern of the six-foot-square Robbing Peter to Pay Paul quilt square she'd been enlarging from her wooden ladders and scaffolding earlier today. She'd left them leaning against the barn. Maybe they'd been burned up by now.

Her agony was not only to see the barn burn but her quilt square, too. How proud she had been of her work, the beauty of the striking design. Bishop Esh had chosen that repetitive, traditional pattern because he said it would remind folks that Paul and Peter were equal apostles—a Bible lesson, even on a barn.

Sarah watched in awestruck horror as the flaming beast devoured her neat white and gold circles within the bright blue squares. The paint crackled and blistered. Was it her imagination that the colors ran like blood? Was this a sign that she should not have asked to place it on the bishop's barn—shouldn't have been so worldly in her pride over it? She'd even felt a bit important when the local newspaper had put this painting and her picture—not of her face, of course—on the front page. But for so long she'd felt different from her Amish sisters and friends…. She stopped herself, knowing her line of thinking was a danger and a sin.

"Their plow team's in the south field!" someone yelled. At least that was a blessing. The six big, blond Percherons that pulled the farm equipment were safe.

"The Eshes must not be home!" Sarah shouted, ignoring Jacob, speaking to her brother and the other boys.

"I called the fire department on my cell," Jacob yelled, coming closer. "They'll be here ASAP."

She wasn't sure what "a sap" meant, but she asked him, "So there are no buggy horses inside, either?"

"Naw or we'd hear them, even over the roar, that's sure!" he shouted as he came closer. She hadn't seen him for months and she couldn't see him well now, only his bulky, black silhouette etched by leaping lights. The fire made a deafening roar. Inside, something heavy fell and little golden lines ran madly between the old, weathered boards. Barn swallows from under the eaves circled madly around the increasing clouds of ash-and-cinder-laden smoke.

It seemed an eternity before the fire engine pumper truck screeched in from the closest town of Homestead with six volunteer firemen, three of them Amish. When Sheriff Freeman's car pulled in with the siren sounding, several other firefighters spilled out to help. They pumped what water they had in the truck through two hoses, then, when that was quickly gone, rigged a hose to draw water from the pond. It was too late to save the barn, so they watered down the roof of the house and outbuildings to keep flying debris from burning them, too.

As word spread or they saw the seething sky, other Home Valley Amish arrived in buggies, some Englische neighbors in their cars. Even before the Eshes raced up the lane in their buggy, back from visiting Mattie Esh's sister on the other side of the valley, even before the local newspaper editor, Peter Clawson, started taking pictures, the big, old barn with Sarah's bright painting on it had burned into oblivion.

Nathan MacKenzie took the call on his cell phone. His digital clock read 3:24 a.m. Something terrible must have happened, and he hoped it wasn't bad news about his foster mother. His heartbeat kicked up. It was his boss, Mark Lincoln, the state fire marshal of Ohio.

"Nate, I need you to check out a big fire in Amish country, pronto. I want you there shortly after dawn."

"Amish country?" he said, raking his fingers through his short hair. "Northeast but south of Cleveland, right? That's Stan Comstock's district."

"Our northeast supervisor's in Hawaii for his daughter's wedding and won't be back for about ten days. It's a barn fire, Nate. Went to the ground—no one inside but for them a huge loss. Two volunteer firefighters were slightly injured when a beam fell. They should have been outside at that point, and I'm not sure how much correct protocol was followed. I just got calls from both the county sheriff and the local newspaper editor. I'll input what I know to you online including GPS specs for getting there. It's in a rural area called the Home Valley outside Homestead, Ohio, in Eden County. Real pretty rolling-hill country."

"And it was arson?"

"We won't know until you take VERA up there and get a good look. But the thing is, the newspaper guy says the Amish in Pennsylvania had a rash of hatecrime barn arsons a couple of years ago, and we can't take a chance with this. You'll have to handle things with kid gloves, not go in like gangbusters, even with VERA, you hear?"

"Of course," Nate said, fumbling in the dark for his jeans. VERA was one of the two expensive, state-of-the-art technology-laden vehicles that served the state Fire and Explosion Investigation Bureau, usually called the Arson Bureau. And VERA was Nate's idea of the perfect date to investigate arson on the road.

"You know much about the Amish?" Mark asked.

"Good food, handmade furniture, quilts, buggies, black clothing, no electricity, old traditions. How's that?"

"When you get a chance, research their belief system or find someone Amish you can trust there to translate their ways for you. Whatever you turn up, they're going to tell you this was God's will. They'll rebuild and forgive the arsonist—if that's what it was."

After Mark hung up, Nate muttered, "They may forgive, but I won't."

Sarah glanced out the window of the Esh farmhouse again. The beast that had devoured the barn left only a pile of blackened bones. The emergency vehicle carrying the two injured firefighters—Levi Miller, Amish, and Mike Getz, Englische—to the regional hospital had pulled away. Both had been struck by debris when a flaming beam fell and temporarily trapped them before they were rescued. Word was that, despite broken bones, both were expected to recover just fine.

Jacob had been asked to go, but other than that, no one had left. It was as if the circle of Home Valley neighbors were mourning a mutual, fallen friend. Since the Amish held worship services in their homes or barns every other week, and it was an off Sunday, many had buggied in. Others had arrived, including Ray-Lynn Logan. The owner of the Dutch Farm Table Restaurant in Homestead had parked next to the sheriff's car and was handing out doughnuts and coffee. Ray-Lynn was Sarah's friend and an outspoken admirer of her painting skills.

Sarah was exhausted and filthy, but to please her devastated hosts, she sat at the Eshes' kitchen table to eat. Mattie Esh and her two oldest daughters, Ida and Ruth, both married and living nearby, were turning out scrambled eggs and bacon to be washed down by hot chocolate. Sarah had been thanked repeatedly for spotting the flames and for rushing here to warn the family. But she still felt as if someone had died, not only the old barn, but the painted square that had meant so much to her.

"Still can't figure a cause," Bishop Esh muttered to his wife. "No kerosene lantern out there, no green hay to smolder in the bays or loft, no lightning storm, and at night."

"God's will," Mattie told him, tears in her eyes. "We may not understand His ways but must learn to accept."

"So who's the preacher now?" her husband said, his voice tired but kind. "We'll rebuild, Lord willing."

Sarah offered to help clear the table, but they wouldn't hear of it, so she went outside again. She wanted to head home to wash up and relieve Martha from taking care of their grandmother, but she just couldn't leave yet. If—when—the Eshes rebuilt, would they want another painted square? It had gone a long way that the bishop had let her put one on his barn, even though it was fairly small at first. What was worrying her most was that some of Gabe's friends at the danze last night had been smoking around her family's barn. It was a fair distance across the field, so surely none of them had sneaked over here to get more privacy for their doings, then carelessly thrown a butt or match down. The Amish never locked their barns, even if, in these modern times, some had begun to lock their homes.

From the back of her van's tailgate, Ray-Lynn, still handing out coffee in paper cups, motioned Sarah over. The Kauffman women, Sarah's mamm and married sister, Lizzie, made the half-moon pies for Ray-Lynn's restaurant, and Sarah delivered them fresh daily in her buggy. Like most everyone else around, she loved to talk to Ray-Lynn. Even in the grief of this morning, she was like a spark of sunlight.

The shapely redhead was about to turn fifty, a widow whose dream had always been to have her own good home-cookin' restaurant in Cleveland—that is, before she'd fallen in love with Amish country. Her husband had suffered a drop-dead heart attack six years ago, just before they were to buy the restaurant, once owned by an Amish family who couldn't keep up with the state's increasingly strict health inspection codes.

But newspaper owner and editor, Peter Clawson, had gone in as Ray-Lynn's partner, and she had made a real go of it, expanding to three rooms and a big menu. The Dutch Farm Table was the most popular place to eat and meet in town for both the local English and Amish, and, of course, tourists. They used to come by the busload, though they'd been in shorter supply lately in the far-reaching American recession.

"Good for you to spot that fire, Sarah," Ray-Lynn said, and gave her a one-armed hug. "Gonna get your name in the paper again."

"It didn't save the barn. Maybe you can tell Mr. Clawson not to overdo it, especially so soon after that article about my barn quilt squares."

"It may be a biweekly paper, but he's putting out a special edition over this. I'll bet we get folks here to gawk at the burned barn, let alone your other paintings. And if the Cleveland or Columbus papers pick this up, especially if it turns out to be foul play—"

"Foul play? Did you hear that someone set the fire?"

"The sheriff just wants all the bases covered, so he called the state fire marshal's office," she said with a roll of her snappy brown eyes. "But barn burning's not the way we'd like to get buyers and spenders 'round here, is it? Personally, this painting," she went on, pointing at the patch of empty sky where Sarah's quilt square used to be, "was my favorite so far. Hi, ya'll," she called to someone behind Sarah as she gestured them over. "Coffee here, doughnuts all gone."

Though Ray-Lynn had lived in Cleveland with her husband for years, it was no secret she'd been born and bred in the deep South, so she drew her words out a lot more than most moderns did. She even had a sign in the restaurant over the front door that Sarah had painted. It read Southern Hospitality and Amish Cooking—Ya'll Come Back, Danki. And she was always trying to talk Sarah into painting a huge mural of Amish life on the side wall.

Secretly, Sarah yearned to paint not static quilt patterns but the beauty of quilts flapping on a clothesline, huge horses pulling plows in spring fields, rows of black buggies at church, one-room schoolhouses with the kinder playing red rover or eckball out back, weddings and barn raisings….

But all that was verboten. No matter what Ray-Lynn urged, Sarah knew an Amish painter could never be an Amish artist.

Mystery, suspense and romance combines to make this one a page turner.

Amish barns are being torched in Home Valley Ohio, is it a hate crime against the Amish? Perhaps it might be that the arsonist is targeting barns where Sarah Kauffman has painted her murals. You see Sarah is an Amish woman who loves to paint, so when the elders of her community decide to allow her to paint quilt squares on Amish barns in the hopes it might draw in tourists, those barns start burning! When Englisher Nate MacKenzie is sent from Columbus to investigate he knows he will have his work cut out for him because of Amish beliefs. Sarah decides to help Nate any way she can and as their friendship develops they realize their feelings go deeper than that! Can Nate and Sarah work together to catch a fire bug without falling in love?

I love the contemporary feel of this Amish novel, but the thing that really drew me in was the fact that the Amish weren't standoffish instead they readily accepted the help of an outsider. Also the Amish don't come off as perfect by any means in this story. Sarah is a young Amish lady who struggles to conform to what her people believe, but her heart longs to paint. She also had a failed relationship with a young man who left the faith, which made her seem much more real to me. Nate is a character that is easy to understand,he struggles with issues from his past, but I felt like those same issues led him on the path of what he would do with his life, which was to become a fire investigator.

There was never a down time with this book, it took me awhile to figure out who the arsonist was. Although I felt the ending was a bit rushed, the conclusion was good, and of course since its part of a trilogy there were a few questions left unanswered which makes me anxious to read the next book in the series!
Overall if your looking for a contemporary Amish fiction, that is mystery and suspense blended with a sweet romance then check out "Fall From Pride," the first book in A Home Valley Amish series. If this first book is any indicator of the rest of the series then I predict its going to be a great!

fun romantic suspense
By A Customer
In Home Valley, Ohio, an arsonist is destroying the barns that belong to the Amish. State Fire and Explosion Investigative Unit arson investigator Nate Mackenzie arrives to determine whether these are hate crimes as occurred in Pennsylvania two years ago. If yes the targets are either the Amish church leaders or artist Sarah Kauffmann, who had painted murals on the barns just before they were burned down.

Sarah and Nate team up as she can assist him in understanding the culture of her people though ironically she feels in many ways like an outsider. However, though each tries to ignore their attraction to the other, working the arson case together keeps them in close proximity as they fall in love. Like trying to solve the fires case is almost as difficult as finding a resolution to a permanent relationship.

The opening Amish Home Valley romantic suspense is an entertaining tale starring a strong lead couple and fully developed secondary characters. Nate and Sarah feel like outsiders but connect at first sight; readers will enjoy her jealous of his VERA. Although the story line decelerates at about the half way point before shifting back into first gear, readers will appreciate this delightful arson investigative romance.

Amish Mystery
By Maureen
Amish barns are starting to burn, State of Ohio arson investigator Nate MacKenzie is called to Home Valley. One thing in common is Quilt Art on each of the barns. With permission of the Bishop Sarah Kauffman has been painted quilts on barns, to tempt tourists in the area.
I enjoyed the descriptions of every day life in the Amish Community. Loved the relationship of the family with their Grandmother. You will meet a couple of Sarah's friends that are shunned. You will also find a forbidden relationship blooming between Sarah and Nate. There are also a few other relationships that you will be wondering what is going to happen.
With many twists and turns, the truth will come out as to who and why the barns are burning. Good Summer mystery read!
